s but it was very important to to sell
s like the weight of the weapon because we
s could animate the chain and we could you
s know really sell like the impacts and
s like the sweeping motions

s welcome to forge and eternum where we
s talk about all things new world today
s we're going to be talking about the new
s weapon coming out on the expansion the
s flail I'm joined today by Josh who
s designed this weapon uh a combat lead a
s combat designer Jr or player experience
s lead and Kyle the sound designer on the
s weapon
s uh so let's Jump Right In and start with
s you Jr uh why did we choose the flail
s like why of all the potential weapons
s that we could have created did we sort
s of land on this
s well uh we we actually started the
s development of this weapon years ago and
s it started as actually we were thinking
s about doing a whip and through much
s iteration and much back and forth we
s tried lots of different concepts and we
s ended up actually coming back to
s something more whip-like but with the
s flail
s um and it was uh this weapon is uh it's
s you know it has
s different aspects to it but it's it's
s you know part partly uh tank focused and
s and partly healer focused
s um and that was like kind of an
s archetype that we didn't have in the
s game yet um so it's it's very much like
s a paladin type
s um archetype that we did this weapon and
s Josh what was sort of like some of the
s inspiration early on when you were
s designing this weapon
s uh well some of the inspiration for it
s was trying to kind of add an additional
s level of experience that was very
s limited that we already had like Jr said
s where uh we had our healer which was the
s life staff we had the tank which was the
s sword and shield and then we kind of
s wanted to be able to
s add additional stuff for both of those
s based on
s like
s kind of being able to get two birds in
s one stone so we added a kind of a tanky
s aspect to it which is The Shield part
s where it's very defensive and supportive
s and then the flail or the healing aspect
s of it which adds to healing and a kind
s of additional support aspect of it so we
s were able to go strength and focus and
s in a way kind of add two weapons in one
s and then Kyle tell me a little bit about
s the sound like early on like what are
s you thinking about in terms of like the
s aesthetic and sound for the flail
s yeah that's one was really fun to work
s was really fun to work on
s um because it kind of straddles the line
s between physical and Magic so it was fun
s to play into what you know when you see
s something happen on screen with a chain
s type flail weapon there sounds that you
s inherently you you think of
s you're just kind of
s um designing cool stuff to cover that
s and then from there you can be more
s creative and really expand your palette
s with the magic stuff
s um all the Arcane kind of like elements
s here and there
s um
s art came from really really out there
s sound design techniques and very
s um
s none of it is you have the natural stuff
s and the physical stuff kind of grounding
s it and then the Arcane stuff
s peppered in to give it that magical feel
s and it's funny that it started as a whip
s too because whips were actually a huge
s inspiration in the soundscape as well
s and then what about you briefly
s mentioned how does this weapon scale
s what are the attributes that it scales
s on uh so it's primary scaling is
s strength and then secondary is focus so
s it does do less scaling on the focus but
s that's because it has a lot more utility
s with the healing and we added some
s additional functionality where the Buffs
s will Scale based on how much Focus you
s have so there's some where the duration
s starts relatively low but the more Focus
s you put into it the duration will will
s go up or it'll just get more power and
s so
s we went with strength to kind of Aid
s into more of a kind of bruther tanky
s style build and focus to do support and
s healing and so just to make it as
s versatile as possible and it's the first
s weapon that we have that is a strength
s and focus combination that's cool Jr you
s mentioned a little bit about this but
s one of the things that I think is
s coolest about this weapon is it's the
s first weapon that has animation in the
s weapon itself right tell us a little
s more about that and like how we use that
s yeah so uh this was the first weapon
s that actually has animation on the
s weapon itself and that that involves
s like actually creating a rig for the in
s case you don't know what a rig is it's
s like you know anything that's animated
s needs bones for it um and so the player
s character has has bones they get
s animated and so does the flail itself
s um so it was it was one of the more
s complicated weapons to actually execute
s on because that and it required a lot
s more uh animation
s um uh iteration to just get it to feel
s really good but it was very important to
s to sell like the weight of the weapon
s because we could animate the chain and
s we could you know really sell like the
s impacts and like the sweeping motions
s um so it was like kind of pivotal to
s to the flail experience that's really
s cool because we call it a flail but it's
s important to note that that head of the
s flail really animates very far out in
s some of the moves so
s so Josh tell us a little bit about the
s two trees obviously we don't want to
s give too many spoilers give us a little
s high level of what the two trees are and
s sort of what the focus of each one is
s and maybe highlight one ability or
s something in each tree that you like
s okay yeah so the left tree uh it's
s called the cleric tree it's mainly
s focused for healing and support but uh
s support via
s uh kind of debuffing enemies but then
s also simultaneously healing or buffing
s your allies so
s be aggressive attack things and heal and
s buff them at the same time and then uh
s the right tree is called the Bastion
s tree it's more about defensiveness and
s tanking and kind of similar to the other
s tree where it's all about attacking and
s then you buff your allies give them more
s defense increase your own survivability
s and
s kind of you can mix and match the trees
s to kind of get combinations but each one
s kind of strengthens Itself by kind of
s going all in on it and then certain
s abilities that stand out so the the
s right tree the Bastion one there's one
s called barrage which is a pretty big fan
s favorite for most people but you charge
s forward you can uh pass through all that
s all the enemies and allies and just
s clear a path basically and then when you
s decide that you get to choose when it
s ends and when you decide for like when
s you hit that limit you do this awesome
s cool animated flip and hit the ground
s and then fortify yourself fortify any
s allies that may be nearby that impact
s point and so that one definitely stands
s out and then uh for the cleric tree one
s that one of my personal favorites is
s called Arcane Vortex and it's just
s visually uh very kind of magnificent in
s a way that's very awesome bfx to it your
s character spins and the flail spins
s around several times and it just it just
s looks and stands out like just visually
s it's a cool one
s Kyle what about you like when you were
s making these moves any standout move any
s stories about sort of the creation of
s the specific ability sound effects you
s got
s um well I could talk about
s um the ability that you just mentioned
s the vortex one
s um there I don't want to give too much
s away but there are
s um the VFX are very kind of like
s particleistic
s um
s so I used
s um
s something called granular synthesis
s which can take an audio file basically
s and use like little grains to like play
s different pieces of that file
s so using like some natural source and
s then putting it into my granular synth
s and then hitting a key on the keyboard
s gives you like a really partically
s sounding
s kind of glassy like magic style sound
s that fit really well with that ability
s yeah
s and what about a whips you mentioned
s whips how did you use the whips in the
s filming yeah
s um there's a couple abilities that
s um look a bit more whip-like than than
s some
s um so with the closer distance uh sounds
s it was more taking
s the envelope or like kind of
s um the shape of
s the whip sound it's kind of like quiet
s at the very beginning and then you hear
s it come up really fast then there's a
s loud crack and then it goes down really
s fast as well for like the volume of it
s laughs
s and then
s um with the distant sounds I actually
s use a lot of like you know everybody
s knows the sound of like the whip crack
s and it like kind of Echoes in the
s canyons and whatnot um so there's that
s and then mixed in with
s um
s kind of whistly whooshes that like fit
s really well with like something that's
s whippy it was you know like a horse
s oh
s so those are Blended in when you get a
s little farther out and give it a
s different kind of sound when you're
s more distant that's cool
s uh one more thing for you Josh we had
s you mentioned we have some new tech
s where things scale off focus we also
s have some new tech in this weapon that
s based on which Shield type you're using
s things change also right can you talk a
s little bit about that uh yeah we wanted
s to kind of give Shield some additional
s value and kind of mix up what kind of
s happens with each type of Shield so for
s a lot of the upgrades to abilities or
s even some of the passives there's
s functionality changes based on what
s Shield type you have equipped so some
s will potentially do more damage if you
s have the round Shield uh give you some
s sort of increased defense or grit if you
s have the tower shield and then the kite
s right now it's the kite Shield kind of
s gets
s a little bit forgotten it's not yeah
s Left Behind
s um and so we wanted to kind of give the
s kite Shield some really good value to
s kind of mix up the builds people use and
s so uh one of the abilities uh it
s staggers if you use the kite Shield
s which it normally doesn't if you used a
s round or Tower shield and then uh the
s other one the kite will give just some
s other additional functionality and
s interesting benefits based on which one
s of these that's cool finally some love
s for the kite Shields I like it
s well that was our deep diving in the
s flail I hope you enjoyed the program uh
s I do have a community question for you
s all what will be the weapon that you
s pair the flail with what will be your
s two weapon combo let us know in the
s comments uh also like And subscribe if
s you're enjoying the show and see you in
s a tournament
