s favorite character Motif that you did
s I'd say timus cuz then I was able to
s just take this like ball of of musical
s goop and just like start pulling
s different intervals and just expand on
s it it felt like playing with Playdoh
s it's pretty
s cool welcome to forge eternum it is the
s show where we talk about All Things New
s World hello I'm Austin Dev I'm an audio
s lead or the audio lead on new world if
s you look at my background here you can
s probably guess which
s feature um I might have contributed most
s to but I've done a lot of other like
s Tech stuff and creature stuff and things
s in the background that make the game
s sound good this is a very special
s episode with us we have Edward brenen
s our composer for the soundtrack let's
s see here Ed uh welcome first of all I
s don't know if you'd like to give a
s little bit of a a
s background on yourself so the players
s can get to know you I actually never set
s out to become a composer for media um my
s first thing was uh guitar and I uh
s played Rock for a little while when I
s was a kid until somehow I ran into jazz
s and improvised music at large and that
s was my trajectory um I was uh um back
s then I lived in France which is my
s country of origin um and I decided you
s know the best thing for me would be to
s somehow move to New York I I I thought
s the the best thing the safest thing for
s me would be to kind of do a little bit
s of schooling and and see if I could get
s some uh little bit of a network prior to
s moving to this very big city and um I
s went to Berkeley in Boston for about a
s year and a half uh where I was a a
s performance major meaning you know my
s field of study was my instrument and
s Jazz improvisation at large and um I'd
s say the the best thing I got from
s Berkeley was um kind of a blueprint on
s how to keep going um and where I take
s things from that point forward um which
s ended up being super relevant for me
s from being curious about music for
s moving pictures and kind of having this
s um hunger for trying things um
s I turned what was my path as a
s improvising musician to be that of a
s composer uh it didn't happen overnight
s but certainly uh uh something that uh um
s kind of uh yeah just kind of happened
s one step at a time that kind of cuts off
s the the like who are who are you what's
s the background we we skipped over a lot
s of stuff but it might be a good launch
s point for
s talking about the alian
s Wilds we were trying to figure out how
s do we make this amazing art with the
s like melium all these really cool dryad
s creatures the
s haene and then the story arc between
s Artemis and the Beast Lords and the
s player and give that all a shape music
s supporting the
s narrative um and also having it work
s with the the other requirements of our
s gameplay systems and and things like
s that and I guess the first thing that we
s were able to execute on was the 3D
s cinematic and we at this point still
s trying to figure out what are the sounds
s of the expansion I I think the the 3D
s catic was super important for us because
s it's well first of all we were able to
s kind of find the theme for Elian
s Wilds in doing that research um and what
s that meant for the emotional trajectory
s of the expansion but more importantly
s there's something that you wanted to
s touch on with the music which was that
s although some of these
s characters do bad things their
s motivations are generally
s not
s unpure um there's something that emis is
s seeking that is not
s fundamentally bad um there's a Humanity
s to her even when they're not human
s there's there's an element of uh uh of
s neutrality there I say where where
s nature isn't bad or good it just is and
s we wanted the music to kind of have this
s slightly more truthful aspect to it um
s with regards to the emotion we wanted to
s Showcase um it's not not something where
s the music is casting a judgment it it's
s if if anything it's it's highlighting
s certain things and and the power of
s nature and and what you know and the
s idea that it's safeguarding itself to a
s large degree that's what emis is about
s right it's about safeguarding her view
s of the natural world the the emis theme
s I think is interesting uh it's it's got
s a very simple melodic Motif in there
s that is inverted and played with across
s the uh the 3D cinematic the uh 2.5d
s cinematics and then again in the boss
s fight and that in collaboration with
s like all the different instrumentations
s there flush out the theme and like
s they're shift they shift the light
s around the character I thought that that
s was just like a
s fantastic way to show her evolution
s ution as uh when you first meet her in
s the early campaign to what she becomes
s when she terraforms the whole Legion
s Wilds yeah I'm looking at the session
s with all the
s stems the density of the music that was
s delivered was pretty pretty intense and
s a lot to go through and then there's
s lots of little micro edits and
s processing on each one of these to make
s it sit with the uh the gamep playay my
s favorite tune ended end up being the uh
s the gorilla
s fight like that one was a ton of fun
s that's uh The Proving Grounds is that
s track uh just cuz I think I think that
s was inspired through a baritone
s player that had a really really fun kind
s of tribal chanting track that I heard
s him like this is this is Gorilla music
s and then you were able to go in there
s and interpret that into what we have in
s the game and it made the fight uh just
s with the the Rhythm and motion of it all
s fit together really well that's that's
s my favorite thing I think in the whole
s release did you have a track like that
s where you're just like oh yeah that
s that's that's the best one out of out of
s the group I I like the the entirety of
s the soundtrack honestly and for a
s reasons that I think we should dive into
s cuz for me it was a sort of a Creative
s Discovery that was a little different
s from what we from what I had done before
s um in terms of process but I'd say if
s there's any single queue that stands out
s for me that' be a rage of the mammoth
s where for this incredibly massive Beast
s the biggest one in the game you have the
s actually the most feminine approach to
s sound and something that's incredibly
s simple with this like kind of super
s gooey synth on top and just those female
s vocals with a very rhythmic approach to
s things
s uh based on rhythmic subdivisions and
s can I ramble on that for a second let's
s go for it all right this is this is a
s fun music nerd thing it's um it's got
s triplets it's got fives it's got fours
s modulating between each other with the
s female vocal and we went back and forth
s about how we were going to use that but
s like that sound of the vocal is like the
s texture that we used for Artemis emis is
s showing her influence over uh I was just
s say
s mam cuz I don't know how to pronounce
s the actual Mahan Tran whatever they Nam
s the the the
s mammoth um but that female voice like
s weaves in and out of the whole Suite of
s music just to show that Artemis is there
s and like there's different uh groupings
s of instruments that do the same thing
s for the other characters and yeah that
s that track is really really cool awesome
s awesome use of uh rhythm in it yeah and
s then this idea that um you you can show
s rage by sheer power and sheer muscle but
s in this case it was really again you
s know that conversation about what's her
s true motivations what is she after and
s the element of pain that that is within
s her the thing that actually causes rage
s you know the the the the feel I was
s going for is that that that that
s absolute shiny Red Rage that you you
s could experience at times um and if you
s drive in La uh you you'll you'll
s experience it U at least a few times a
s day uh but um all joking aside this um
s this the the the way it kind of dulls
s the senses and make make you feel
s disorientated um you know so that was
s that that shifting sense but
s rhythmically this time not
s harmonically and I guess
s besides hitting the emotional uh uh
s um precursor to everything that's
s happening in the game one of the things
s you wanted me to seek out in the music
s was like hey let's make that exotic in a
s way that is unique to eternum and I'm
s hoping we w we went beyond that to
s figure something out that was uniquely
s Eternal recently we got our uh first
s award for New World which is a Hollywood
s music and media award and you wrote the
s music for this and it's fantastic and
s I'm pretty bewildered that we ended up
s getting it against some of the games
s that we
s were uh just there's so much great work
s so how do you feel with that uh I'm
s incredibly humbled I fully expected not
s to win um the awards took place in this
s like old theater in Hollywood and I was
s up on the balcony filming the
s announcement and then they called my
s name and I had to get up and run like
s what felt like half a mile down uh and
s and just cut through a crowd and go
s backstage and stuff so took me a a good
s 45 minutes to make it to the stage um
s but it was uh it was really really
s awesome um so Ed rapid fire back and
s forth
s yep favorite character Motif that you
s did I'd say emus cuz then I was able to
s just take this like ball of of musical
s goop and just like start pulling
s different intervals and just expand on
s it it felt like playing with Plato was
s pretty cool uh who would win the
s gorillas or the Lions the gorillas
s that's fair yeah I agree with that
s favorite composer let's go with that
s favorite
s composer um I'll give you a few
s different comp composers um I I'd go
s with uh Revel sh sovic Pat
s meini and um yeah let's go with those
s three for now I appreciate that chopan
s would be on my list for that actually
s I'll throw in James Newton Howard huge
s influence on me so Ed to wrap things up
s here when players listen to the whole
s soundtrack or experience it in game is
s there a core feeling that you're like
s this is what it was meant to be that
s you'd want them to experience
s that's a great question uh there are so
s many things and like I said you know we
s had to tap into so many different
s creative muscles but if there's one
s thing I think there's a spirit of
s curiosity and awe that is there uh which
s that is the first thing I experienced
s when I got the footage from you when we
s kicked things off I was like what am I
s looking at uh and I'm hoping that the
s music does its part in kind of bringing
s that that feeling of curiosity and and
s awe and and all that magical lend uh
s around you and how exotic it should feel
s to you well thank you very much Ed for
s being here it's been wonderful having
s this back and forth with you and
s collaborating with you to get this music
s out congratulations on getting the
s Hollywood music and media award uh
s that's just mind-blowing you deserve it
s absolutely uh but this is going to bring
s us to our community question which again
s it is not going to be about balancing
s the game we I don't I don't do that
s don't ask in the comments I mean you can
s but don't the community question this
s week is if you're making a band but all
s the players are animals and each animal
s plays a different instrument what animal
s would play what instrument what type of
s music would they make and what would
s that band be called have fun with it um
s if you enjoy what you've seen here
s please like And subscribe and that is
s the WAP on forged in aternum see you in
s aternum Ed I'll see you in a tum see you
s in turn a and thank you very much for
