30s balance of power we are going to be
32s talking not about creating balance but
34s about breaking balance by introducing a
36s bunch of new stuff in season three so
38s we're going to go a little bit away from
40s the the format and talk about upcoming
42s changes to the Gear to help me go
44s through this all I'm joined by Patrick
46s medley our system our scene Seasons
49s design lead who's now also working and
52s leading the progression team
54s and Drew Higby a player with over 2 000
58s hours in New World also our product
60s manager but don't hold that against them
63s uh all right so let's get into all the
66s big changes coming in season three uh
69s but before we do that I want to talk a
71s little bit about some of the problems
72s we've had and what the sort of goals to
74s fix them are Drew you mind kicking us
76s off here
77s yeah I think one of the big things that
79s we had as we played through and we
81s watched players play through the game is
82s right when you hit Level 60 there's this
84s extra level this extra barrier to
86s getting good gear which is the expertise
88s system and
90s um we decided that it's just not
91s necessary anymore we're just removing
93s the expertise system so if you really
95s loved it sorry it's going it's going
97s away but it's just entirely removed from
100s the game now you don't have to level up
102s uh your gearing by picking up a few
104s rings to be able to get level 600 Rings
106s or anything like that anymore they just
108s drop based on the type of content that
109s you're clearing and you'll get
111s appropriate item level rewards for that
112s content awesome what about umbrella
114s upgrading any changes there yeah for
117s sure I think one of the other things is
118s you would get a piece of gear and you
120s would say oh do I want to invest my
122s umbral shards in this piece of gear it's
123s kind of an upgrade for me right now but
125s it's not the best piece of gear that I
127s want long term I kind of have this
129s anxiety about spending these Emerald
130s shards that take a lot of time and
131s effort to earn and we recognize that so
134s in order to smooth out that process
135s items are just going to drop up at the
137s high the higher item levels appropriate
140s to the content that you're doing you
141s don't need to invest in extra resource
143s into leveling them up or anything
144s awesome and Patrick any uh concerns
147s about the bloat maybe of drops that
149s we've had yeah we drop a lot of items in
152s our game if you run an expedition you're
154s probably coming out of that with about
155s 40 to 50 items so as a player you're
158s then having to sift through your
159s inventory figure out what items you want
161s to keep what you want to sell and then
162s what you're just going to salvage it's
164s not a super fun inventory management
166s minigame so we're not very happy with
167s where that is right now so with that in
170s mind we want to give you less loot but
172s we want that Loop to matter more so what
174s that means is the loot that you do
175s acquire should be higher quality so it
177s should be more useful for you that'll
179s come with a new system called Loop
180s biasing which we'll talk about in a
181s little bit that's awesome what about
183s Chase items any issues there Drew yeah I
186s think throughout the game there's a few
187s different items that drop that have like
189s the three perks that you really really
190s want and so in a way those are Chase
193s items but the reality is they're not
195s three perks that you couldn't get in any
197s other combination or crafting or
199s anything like that so we wanted to do is
201s we wanted to add new Chase items to the
203s game they were really impactful and have
205s unique perks to that end we're adding
207s artifacts to the game which we'll talk
209s about a little bit more awesome any
211s problems or issues we've seen with
212s crafting Patrick Yeah if you're a
215s crafter right now a lot of your life
216s involves around rolling these items and
217s hoping you're going to roll the perfect
219s item it's a lot of RNG and it's not
221s super compelling because you don't have
223s a lot of control over the item you're
224s ultimately making so for the expansion
226s we want to give players the opportunity
228s to craft gear that means more to them so
230s they can understand what they're
232s crafting uh more cleanly to that end
234s we're reducing the ranges that items can
236s roll instead of replacing them with
238s fixed gear scores you know exactly the
240s power of the item you're creating and
241s we're also giving Crafters a way to
243s craft exactly the item they want down to
244s every single perk which we will talk
246s about more when we talk crafting awesome
248s and last sort of issue what about any
250s any issues with perks we've seen Drew
253s well you know you mentioned I'm a
254s product manager we do love data one of
256s the things we did is we looked at all
258s the different perks across the game we
260s looked at their use rates we looked at
261s their their effectiveness we looked at
264s why people were using them in certain
265s circumstances because just because
266s something wasn't being used a lot
267s doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't
269s useful for players and we did a pass and
272s we're removing some we're changing some
274s we're adding a few more perks
276s that's awesome well some pretty big
279s changes here come and I think it's fair
280s to call it's sort of like an overhaul to
282s the loot system in New World
284s well let's start are there any big
286s progression pieces that we should be
287s aware of Drew yeah so one of the
289s exciting things is actually increasing
290s the level cap to level 65 so there's a
292s few more levels to play through as part
295s of that you'll actually just hit level
296s 65 very naturally just playing through
298s the new content in the game this isn't
300s meant to be a long arduous journey to
302s 65. this is you're unlocking a bit more
305s power as you play through the game and
306s people will be 65 pretty quickly and do
309s you get anything with those levels in
311s terms of attributes and how might that
312s change the game for sure yeah there are
314s a few attribute points that you end up
316s getting via just straight up leveling a
317s few via gear score there's actually a
319s few attribute threshold bonuses that
321s you'll be uh getting that weren't there
323s before so there's a new one at 350 and
325s there's a new one at 25. and what this
327s means is there's actually a lot more
328s combinations that you can do across your
330s builds to get these attribute threshold
332s bonuses that are going to change your
333s play style and kind of create a more
335s unique experience to your build as well
337s as optimize some unknown builds right
340s now yeah I like the combination of
342s having some early ones so you can like
344s dabble to get little bit of power and
345s then some of the big ones and he changes
348s to weapon Mastery to go along with with
349s the leveling Patrick yes so we're
351s introducing a new weapon the flail and
353s if you're like me you're gonna equip
354s that flail in day one you're going to
356s want to grind up to weapon Mastery 20 so
357s you can be very effective with it if
359s you're doing that in a live game right
360s now you're probably going to a POI and
362s great cleave or Restless Shores to grind
364s that out and it takes a little bit of
365s time it's not as quick and snappy as
367s we'd like so to the end we're decreasing
368s the amount of experience you need to
370s level a weapon from 1 to 20 by roughly
372s 30 percent with most of those cuts
374s coming on the tail end so levels 15 16
377s 17 and Beyond should be a little more
379s more smooth and quick and you should
381s feel that power progression more cleanly
382s awesome well talking about power
385s progression I think gear is also getting
387s a big upgrade tell us about that yeah so
389s we're increasing the max gear score up
391s to 700 so right now that Max is 625 with
394s most items capping out their drop at
396s around gear score 600. now you can
398s acquire items uh anywhere from gear
400s score 625 up to 700 in the expansion
403s content so they draw drop naturally all
405s the way up to seven they drop naturally
407s all the way to 700 so there's no more
408s upgrading an item to get to that maximum
410s power now you get to go and grind the or
412s go and acquire the exact item that you
414s want at the exact gear score you want so
417s different content will drop items at
418s different gear score ranges so really
421s hard mutation three content for example
422s will drop 695 to 700 giving you the
425s highest odds at that top end content
426s other content will drop at different
429s ranges depending on the difficulty of
431s the content Patrick any changes with
433s attributes come up with this higher gear
435s score yeah so higher gears for items uh
437s your score 675 to 700 roll it legendary
440s and the top end of those items will give
442s you more attribute bonus points than
443s other items so if you really want to
446s optimize your build you're going to be
447s chasing those gear scores 700 items to
449s make yourself as powerful as you can be
450s awesome and combined with the level and
453s the gear approximately how many more
454s attribute points are people going to be
456s getting on average you'll be seeing
458s around 600 attribute points for most
460s players so about 100 more with the
462s expansion which should open up a lot of
463s fun avenues for new builds awesome uh
466s well let's jump into the next topic uh
468s so you mentioned something about uh less
470s loot but loot that matters more it's
472s something a little bit about that yeah
474s so uh the high level goal is that one
476s sentence we want to give you less loot
477s that drops but we want that Loop to
479s matter more uh how we're planning to
480s accomplish a lot of that is a new system
482s we're calling Loop biasing so me as a
484s player I tend to use light armor a spear
487s and a bow and right now when I play the
489s game I'm gonna get items that drop that
491s might be completely useless for me I'll
492s get a heavy Gauntlet with focus on it
494s I'll get a life staff these aren't items
496s I ever plan to use when I'm playing the
498s expansion though I should be getting
499s items that drop that are more meaningful
501s to me as a player because of the
503s attributes I have the weapons I use and
505s the equip weight I'm set at so I can
507s expect to see more light gauntlets that
508s have dexterity on them more Spears
510s dropping more bows all things I as a
512s player might use more frequently or if
514s I'm not personally going to use it I
515s could probably sell it on the trading
516s post so it's really exciting system for
518s me the natural question that rises from
520s this is well I play multiple builds how
523s am I going to make sure that what I'm
525s getting from this content is going to
526s help me gear for those different builds
528s you can easily as a player swap your
529s armor Loadout to maybe my spear sword
532s build and then when I open my caches
534s from Outpost rush or War now I'm going
536s to have a chance of getting swords out
538s of that so I can gear myself easily for
539s multiple pieces of content depending on
541s what I'm wearing at the moment I do that
543s content awesome well speaking of perks
545s Drew tell us a little bit about all the
546s big perk changes coming the season three
548s yeah as I mentioned we kind of looked
550s through a bunch of the different perks
551s and really Dove deep on all the
552s different ones that were there how
554s they're being used maybe they weren't
555s being used to that end some perks are
558s being removed such as the siphoning
560s perks they just didn't have a very high
562s acquisition or use rate probably too
565s high of an acquisition rate definitely
566s too too little of a use rate and so
569s we're removing some perks like that from
571s the game that just aren't seeing use and
572s players don't feel like they're fun the
575s goal here is when you get an item you
578s shouldn't say ah this item isn't just
580s not useful because it doesn't have that
581s one perk that makes it useful to that
584s end we're removing Wards and bands and
586s resilient and items that you're looking
589s for should just be the perks that you're
590s interested in not feeling like there's a
592s mandatory perk that you have to have for
594s an item to even be useful so yeah we
597s changed a few different perks as I
599s mentioned things like some of the weapon
602s Mastery perks so accelerating traps for
605s example kind of plays into that fantasy
607s of being like a hunter Trapper so now
609s the traps not only do they add a speed
611s bonus but they also add a bleed effect
613s so you're dealing a little bit of extra
615s damage if something gets close to you
617s which would make sense because you're
618s generally keeping things at a bit of a
620s range as a musket now you get a little
621s bit of a damage bonus up close via those
623s bleed perks that are on there and then
626s we ended up adding a few more perks
628s because who doesn't like some new perks
630s as long as they're good which we really
631s feel like these ones are very good I'm
633s very interested in decking out my entire
636s fire staff set all the armor will have
638s plus fire damage on it now to give me a
641s nice little bonus to my damage so we're
643s excited about that kind of adding a
644s little bit more dynamic perks to the
647s armor sets that help you offensively not
649s just defensively and not just kind of
651s like the weapon perks so there's a
653s little bit more of a combination a
655s little bit more of a range of things
657s that may appeal to you as a player when
659s you see items start dropping coming soon
660s awesome and one of my favorite new perks
664s coming magnify tell me a little bit
666s about how this works yeah so one of the
667s things is uh maybe you have a really
670s good weapon that just has 30 Con on it
673s or something and you you want to use it
675s in certain sets but you can't because it
677s ends up throwing off your attributes a
678s little bit well magnify helps solve that
680s problem it just magnifies whatever your
682s highest attribute is so if your entire
684s strength set is a strength set now it's
686s going to add 30 strength as opposed to
688s adding 30 con previously but if you swap
690s over to a tanking set and you still want
692s to use that item now it gives you 30 con
694s because that's what you're expecting to
695s the most we feel like this will let you
697s feel like the items that you worked
699s really hard to get are even more
701s valuable because you can use them across
703s more builds and also allows you to kind
704s of experiment with other builds a little
706s bit easier and hopefully that opens up a
708s lot of new possibilities awesome
710s well let's dive into probably one of my
712s favorite features coming in the
715s expansion tell me about artifacts
716s Patrick Yeah artifacts are awesome uh
718s they are gear scores 700 uh play style
721s build defining objects you can acquire
723s in the world so we have a whole set of
725s artifacts coming with the expansion and
727s you can find these on named enemies in
729s the open world out of dungeons the PVP
731s reward track all sorts of content will
733s be vectors for these artifacts to drop
734s when you get an artifact it's a unique
737s one-off item so it has a unique perk on
739s it that will not exist on any other uh
741s any other item in the game so one
743s example my personal favorite is called
744s scorpion sting it is a spear that has
746s Javelin uh as I perk but that Javelin
749s doesn't push the enemy away it pulls
750s them to you it's going to be super
752s useful for me in Outpost Rush when you
754s get scorpion sting you're going to go
756s and you're going to see that it has a
757s bunch of perks on it they're locked
758s behind a quest so when you equip it the
761s spirit you're going to see your HUD
762s change to show the objectives that you
764s need to complete to unlock those perks
766s as you complete those objectives it
768s might say go kill thorpson Thorpe in the
770s depths for example you're going to kill
771s Thorpe and then immediately that perk is
773s going to unlock you're going to have
774s that artifact be slightly more powerful
776s eventually you'll have unlocked every
777s perk on the artifact and it's going to
779s be a really really powerful item that
781s you're going to want to make sure you
782s have equipped so you can have three of
784s them equipped at a time one weapon one
786s armor piece and one jewelry piece and
789s hopefully they should really change the
790s way you're playing the game awesome what
792s about you you got any favorite uh
794s artifacts there's a lot of really fun
796s artifacts really excited to roll them
798s out to everybody one of the ones I think
799s is very defining for tanks is there's
801s one called the wall that you're probably
803s going to want to pick up it's a tower
804s Shield it dramatically increases your
807s ability to block it has like an enhanced
809s sturdy blocking it has 25 less damage
812s from Elemental attacks obviously super
814s huge but all things that are good need a
817s little bit of a trade-off you're not
818s gonna be able to dodge with this thing
819s it's just too powerful to be able to
821s move and Dodge at the same time so it'll
823s be something that it will change your
825s playstyle as a player but it should lean
827s into kind of your class fantasy your way
830s you want to play the game in a lot of
832s different ways it's awesome my favorite
834s probably is the abyss it's a great ax
836s that actually scales off in rather than
838s strength so it allows you to try new
840s builds and all the damages void damage
842s so it's pretty cool
844s all right let's jump into crafting
846s Patrick what are some of the changes
848s coming with crafting yeah so as we
850s mentioned a little bit earlier uh
851s Crafters right now have this Paradigm
853s that we don't love where you're rolling
855s on a pretty wide range of gear scores so
857s it makes getting the item you want to
858s graft pretty hard to do so first big
860s change you're making is your score is
862s now a fixed value when you craft you
864s know exactly the gear score you're going
865s to Output so when you have all of your
867s Buffs equipped all of your food taken
868s Town buff is up you know that you're
870s going to craft an item at a specific
872s your score and then you can still roll
873s on those perks depending on the uh what
876s attribute mod you throw in there what
877s perk mod you throw in there Etc but
879s we're also giving players away to
880s guarantee a gear scores 700 with a new
883s item called the as auth inductor the
885s asth inductor will give you a bonus to
887s your score guarantee you that top end
888s gear score and let you craft a very
889s powerful item but wait there's more
891s we're also adding an item called the
893s Prismatic Scarab this will let you on a
896s set Cadence craft an item that is
898s exactly the item you want so you can
899s specify the attribute type every single
901s perk on the item and output basically
904s the item of your dreams and it should
905s allow players to create best and Slot
907s items a lot more cheaply than they can
909s in the current game and another change
911s is now you can use both the you can use
914s both at the same time right to guarantee
915s the gear score correct you can couple
917s that Prismatic scare but with the as
918s auth inductor to craft that perfect gear
920s score 700 item it's awesome hey well
