18s World I'm Rosie the associate art
21s director on new world and this is Darren
23s hi I'm Darren I'm the design lead on
25s Expeditions and we're going to talk
27s about Savage divide the Expedition for
29s our new territory Elysium Wilds I know
32s Elysium Wiles is a big takeover for
34s First Flight first light was literally
36s taken over by invasive growth right so
40s we had to take
42s the existing art and just completely
44s take it over but also make it look
46s totally unique and feel unique too as
48s well so the Expedition itself is
51s um composed entirely a beast to that
53s present any challenges on the art side
56s I think so because the beasts don't
58s actually make anything so that makes it
61s easy because there's something to work
63s with there's you know their architecture
65s but they don't have that so we had to
67s use the invasive growth which actually
71s like the team worked really hard to make
72s that look totally new and fresh but also
75s like it's part of the world of new world
77s and and
79s um but like it's taken it over from
81s within so and then we also had to
83s distinguish the different areas for each
85s Beast type there's several different
87s Beast types so we were going to talk a
90s little bit about the story yeah Mahatma
93s the mammoth Lord has retreated in Savage
96s divide
97s in Madness and players have to go into
100s Savage fight to throttle the Beast
101s Lord's power each of the beasts are
103s represented in Savage divide it's the
105s first expedition that is entirely
107s composed of beasts which presented a lot
110s of challenges from a design standpoint
112s right and an art standpoint and an art
115s standpoint do you want to talk a little
116s bit about the art sure we wanted to have
119s something completely unique but we also
121s needed to make sure that all the
123s different areas in the Expedition looked
125s unique from each other because otherwise
128s players would just get lost
130s and then also the invasion is is totally
134s organic so there's a lot of organic you
136s know plants and and Bramble and Invasion
139s that's taking over so we picked
142s different rooms sections of the
145s Expedition and made them look more
148s specific by taking you know parts of the
151s different foliage and and Flora that
155s we'd made for the invasion itself often
157s sir this is sort of like the culmination
159s of the whole uh Invasion look and feel
163s every area looks different and has a
167s different one of the plants that's taken
169s over talking about the zone for and the
171s Expedition together right and the
175s Expedition being kind of a culmination
177s of all the work that's gone into the
179s Zone exactly yeah and trying to build
181s out each specific area in the Expedition
184s to have its own sort of postcard moment
187s if you will exactly it's got yeah that
188s Kodachrome moment where you can get a
191s screenshot if you're not being attacked
193s if you're not being attacked by the
194s Beast something that design and art have
197s in common here is that there were
199s multiple iterations right oh yeah to get
201s to these points yes it's it takes a lot
204s of work and a lot of collaboration to
206s get these expeditions
208s fun and that ultimately we want them to
210s be fun do you want to talk about some of
212s the unique fun things about the
214s Expedition there are some unique things
216s so
217s um this is kind of Hub design so there's
220s actually multiple paths that are viable
223s in this Expedition which is kind of new
225s for us
226s there's a secret that is findable in the
231s Expedition which is entirely new we
232s haven't actually buried something like
234s this before aside from that I think the
237s big standout is it's the first
239s expedition that's actually just all
241s beasts that was a huge Challenge from
243s the combat standpoint there was a ton of
245s work that went into
247s iterating on the both the combat of the
250s individual creatures and the combat in
253s the sense of the encounters and the
255s density and which pairings worked and
258s which pairings didn't work so and
260s there's a lot of creatures in the expert
262s and they're all new not only are there a
264s lot of creatures like the gorillas the
266s mammoths the armored dragon and the
269s chameleons
270s but there are also variations of them on
273s different elements we have also new
277s technology for them to pounce down from
280s Ledges so you'll see some of that in the
282s Expedition and it's also highlighted in
284s the zone I really like the the throwing
287s the grill is throwing yeah that's really
290s cool
291s um and the elemental attacks by the
293s mammoths are really cool yeah the whole
295s uh the room where the gorilla is is like
298s attacking you and charging up at the
300s different Spirit shrines the boss fight
302s yeah the boss fight is amazing yeah both
305s boss fights I think are um really over
307s the top Mahatma the mammoth Lord boss
310s fight is
311s um also featuring some new technology
314s where there's a secondary creature on
316s top of him that's like lasering you down
319s and it's it's a crazy scene what's your
322s favorite uh encounter The Chameleons are
325s really a standout for me yeah they're
328s very fun yeah and they're very
329s chameleony they actually disappear yeah
333s super cool and um and they are kind of a
336s difficulty Spike too so you know when
339s you're you're fighting them that was
341s kind of a challenge getting it just hard
342s enough right for players the Expedition
345s should be a lot more approachable than
348s previous Expeditions and the reason for
350s that is that we're doing tuning across
351s the board on the expeditions to make
354s them more approachable
355s so I think in normal mode players are
358s going to have a lot easier time getting
360s in and and through this Expedition which
363s is intended and that will be true for
367s all Expeditions in the game we're going
369s to save the really hard gameplay for
371s mutators we're also reducing mutators to
374s three levels of difficulty in the
376s expansion and that is a big change we're
379s trying to um reduce the number of
381s different mutators so that players can
384s get into games faster and easier well
386s talking about all the Expeditions what's
388s your favorite of all of them I have
390s favorites in in different ways I I think
393s yeah that's fair I think yeah Tempest
396s heart is
397s um part of the original story and I've
402s been around for the whole a pretty good
406s chunk of the development so like seeing
408s that culmination in Tempest heart was a
411s really meaningful moment for me and then
414s our last Expedition Imperium Forge I
417s think is super fun I love part of the
420s art
421s in the background with all the gears
423s moving animation in the uh background
426s and the sound design on it is just
428s phenomenal how do you think that
430s compares to
431s um The Savage divide there is such a
434s cool contrast between them that it's
438s it's really neat to see like how
442s different Imperium forges from Savage
444s divide yeah right that's something that
446s we really wanted to get like different
448s totally different feeling different
449s temperatures different sort of energy in
453s each one and we really want players to
455s feel like they're getting something
457s really new with the uh with the whole
460s new Expedition that brings us to our
462s community question
