s | hey everybody Welcome to forge and |
s | eternal the show where we talk about all |
s | things new world today we are going to |
s | talk about the languages of eternum and |
s | uh joining me here is our audio God |
s | Sound and Music uh expert Jed we have |
s | our Lore Master Aaron and our Ace writer |
s | Divia |
s | and yeah I think the thing that you know |
s | the thing that most players probably |
s | want to start with is is where do these |
s | exotic languages that we have for the |
s | corrupted and these and the different |
s | enemy families come from and Jed you |
s | were working on this long before yeah |
s | that was uh quite a while ago actually |
s | um you know it started with uh necessity |
s | we had um the corrupted and they were |
s | not speaking anything and uh you know |
s | designers mentioned like hey they need |
s | to make sounds and was like ah we can't |
s | just you know have them say uh gibberish |
s | right we need to come up with |
s | um something that has um that is |
s | constructed and we started looking for |
s | softwares online |
s | um to generate languages because you |
s | know like movies and TV shows I've hired |
s | people for like several years to develop |
s | languages |
s | um it's it's a lot of money it takes a |
s | lot of time and then every time you need |
s | to translate something you need to bring |
s | back that person if you don't have you |
s | know all the grammar and the future |
s | those tenses and all that kind of stuff |
s | so we actually found a great sell of |
s | software called Virgo Lang |
s | I think it's made in Australia and it's |
s | fantastic so when I first actually |
s | started using it it had like a one |
s | single button that was generating the |
s | languages randomly and it would create |
s | like the title of the language like the |
s | grammar like all the dictionary and just |
s | in a split of a second and it had like |
s | the possibility to generate billions of |
s | different languages it's insane so I was |
s | super stoked about it but then after we |
s | needed to focus and find what would be |
s | the language for the corrupted so I just |
s | started hitting and hitting and hitting |
s | over and over again you know random |
s | languages and taking |
s | uh just one sentence that's actually |
s | always consistent and generated by the |
s | software and I put into Amazon pulley |
s | which is a text to speech synthesizer |
s | and |
s | um that way I could hear how the |
s | language sounded every time I hit uh you |
s | know the random button and at some point |
s | I think we probably tried 100 times but |
s | at some point I found something that was |
s | interesting that feel like you know that |
s | felt like coherent and uh something that |
s | actually I would be able to say and then |
s | after there's the software is fantastic |
s | because you can fine tune the language |
s | you can remove some |
s | um concerns like change the vowels and |
s | and you can make it sound a little bit |
s | more I don't know like French or Spanish |
s | or you know like Arabic or even Greek a |
s | little bit |
s | um so it's it's it's quite cool it's a |
s | cool process yes and and I gotta ask how |
s | come you started with corrupted because |
s | chronologically from the lore team we're |
s | all like why didn't you start with the |
s | Ancients because they came first but |
s | um yeah that's right uh the Ancients at |
s | the time had that |
s | you know that kind of sound they didn't |
s | feel like they needed to speak words |
s | because they're just made out of bones |
s | that was the skeletons that we had at |
s | the beginning but the corrupted um the |
s | special corrupted characters we had to |
s | start with were the broken villagers I |
s | think they're called uh it's the one you |
s | know that has like they look like |
s | zombies |
s | um and so they definitely felt like they |
s | had a vocal tract and you know they were |
s | able to say words and we wanted to give |
s | them |
s | um a variety of a different uh lines so |
s | you have some corrupted that are very |
s | aggressive and some of the ones that are |
s | completely brain dead and if you |
s | actually would understand what they say |
s | some the zombie that I really brain dead |
s | though say like uh where's my sword uh a |
s | little bunny what are you doing here |
s | [Music] |
s | and you know they see silly things they |
s | lost their ability to think and uh the |
s | uh the more intelligent one that just |
s | like they want to kill you |
s | um so you know it it helps us to uh it's |
s | a framework to create narrative but the |
s | players don't know about it because we |
s | never translated those lines in the open |
s | world and then after we had to create uh |
s | once we found that was cool we had to |
s | create the language for the entrance and |
s | then we had to create one for the lost |
s | and then after we're like wait wait |
s | um The Players we had to make one for |
s | the players because we have all those |
s | emotes and the players were not saying |
s | anything |
s | and at the time we're looking at the |
s | cost of doing English Spanish Italian |
s | polish and you know all those different |
s | languages times two because we have male |
s | and female characters the cost was |
s | astronomic so we had to come up with a |
s | new language that's the reason I think |
s | the creation of the languages though is |
s | what fascinates me when I came to the |
s | project that languages had already been |
s | created and one of the things I found |
s | very important was the pronunciation so |
s | if you you would do a series of I would |
s | write the dialogue you you would |
s | translate it to corrupted and then if |
s | you read it with just like a normal |
s | English accent you know |
s | and and Michael and I the other sound |
s | designer wonderful Michael uh we were |
s | like no no no this this it's all in how |
s | you're going to pronounce it so we |
s | started playing around and I was like |
s | that's what it should sound like and |
s | Michael's like yeah yeah do that again |
s | so you know we started really working on |
s | how does it sound we know we know what |
s | the spelling is but how does it sound |
s | when somebody who is corrupted speaks |
s | the language and that's when it really |
s | came it came to life for me at that |
s | point I'm like ah I get it I get it |
s | they're all speaking this strange |
s | guttural demonic kind of a speech it was |
s | very cool I have a question for all of |
s | you so how do you match a language to |
s | the species that the language that the |
s | speaking the language |
s | like how did you choose the character |
s | yeah so when you ran by so many |
s | languages and when you are working on a |
s | language how do you know that this life |
s | language |
s | or the enemy that you are creating |
s | so I think like he comes from like uh |
s | like almost like from sound design you |
s | know we listen to an animal like the the |
s | plethora of vocalizations they do and |
s | it's very distinct between different |
s | animals uh and even you know |
s | um in our civilizations all of our |
s | languages have evolved throughout you |
s | know like thousands of years |
s | unfortunately for a game it didn't have |
s | the time to evolve that much but um so |
s | we had to make uh decisions on you know |
s | mostly how they sounded for the |
s | corrupted I mentioned before you know |
s | we're had the ability to narrow down a |
s | little bit the amount of consonants and |
s | vowels and sort of like restrict the |
s | language |
s | um and you have a lot of uh |
s | customization like if people want to try |
s | virgoing it has like a free |
s | um it's it's online you don't have to |
s | install anything so you can test it and |
s | hear it so why make the decision to |
s | shorten it |
s | um I guess like constraints because yeah |
s | when I was randomizing the languages it |
s | all sounded the same at the end right so |
s | we want to make sure we narrow it down |
s | to like a very specific type of sound |
s | then after comes the performance of The |
s | Actors and like like Aaron was |
s | mentioning you know like the intonation |
s | and all that |
s | um layer of subjectivity that people |
s | bring to the language but you know like |
s | for example it the player so |
s | then after once we narrowed down the the |
s | sound of a language we you know try to |
s | we try to create another one with what |
s | the other one isn't using right to make |
s | it sound a little bit different so the |
s | player will say you know drag saw it's |
s | actually that it means hello if you have |
s | like a an emote you'll hear that all the |
s | time |
s | um and if you want to say happy to be |
s | here as a player uh I don't think |
s | there's a emote that says that but it |
s | would be June nice |
s | um but as a lost uh character if you |
s | wanted to say hello it would be we why |
s | and if you want to say happy to be here |
s | would be checking cecia okay so it |
s | starts it starts to sound a little bit |
s | different so I love all of that and I |
s | think it makes a lot of sense from like |
s | the sound aspect and what you are |
s | hearing in connection to the creature or |
s | the person that is speaking |
s | but so now that's from sound but what |
s | about the flavor what about like uh the |
s | Lord the story aspect of it Judd created |
s | this before we started so this language |
s | is fully created and we didn't add |
s | anything to it we've we've chosen the |
s | win we voice corrupted characters or |
s | ancient Guardians are lost like Jed had |
s | mentioned like they say certain types of |
s | things right the lost have lost their |
s | souls so they've lost a lot of their |
s | personality they've lost a lot of their |
s | memories |
s | like the things they're going to talk |
s | about and the things they're going to |
s | say are going to be very different from |
s | you know the things that the corrupted |
s | would say because the corrupts that are |
s | hyper focused they're they're you know |
s | inside they have this this instinctive |
s | you know voice voracious corruption |
s | talking to them |
s | um and that drives what they would say |
s | yeah |
s | but um but yeah I mean but there's |
s | examples among the Lost who are a lot |
s | more cognizant and say you know speak a |
s | lot more intentionally and no more the |
s | siren Queens a great example of that |
s | right yeah that one was super fun one |
s | because |
s | um we wanted to push a little bit |
s | um the first female character what she |
s | would actually say you know during the |
s | combat and we decided to that was |
s | actually the first character we had to |
s | decide design the the Lost language for |
s | and then uh we wanted her to sing along |
s | the music during the uh in the arena and |
s | I don't know if it was a happy accident |
s | or what but the the language is really |
s | suit again talking about the Ancients |
s | when we were talking about what do the |
s | Ancients sound like what what is their |
s | voice so if you just do the conlang and |
s | you just read it like a normal |
s | it doesn't have but now hear it through |
s | the sound that Jed and the sound team |
s | came up with that did you redo that that |
s | thrumming sound like stones are speaking |
s | then suddenly it's |
s | it becomes this amazing thing |
s | so I think a language is more than just |
s | you know here are the letters here's how |
s | you kind of pronounce it it's it's you |
s | know and Game of Thrones does this right |
s | uh Game of Thrones seems so real because |
s | they had a language expert come in and |
s | do the Dothraki language and do the |
s | language of the all the other karth and |
s | all these other places uh who's also by |
s | the way the gentleman who did the |
s | Klingon language |
s | um but yeah so when you're thinking |
s | about the Klingons and again I don't |
s | know if you planned this but if you |
s | didn't what a happy accident when you're |
s | speaking Klingon it should be harsh |
s | guttural clipped short you know to the |
s | point and and you manage that with uh |
s | with the corrupted and I thought I |
s | thought you designed it that way like |
s | you found all the harsh K's and and |
s | harsh sounds and this and you put them |
s | all together into a language but you're |
s | saying no you just randomized it so |
s | there's a little trick to it okay |
s | um when we create a when we work on a |
s | new character and we're looking for you |
s | create those lines |
s | um I use |
s | a thesaurus dictionary okay so that |
s | sometimes the word I'm looking for in |
s | language doesn't exist there's only four |
s | thousand words which is quite a lot |
s | right but um some you know we want |
s | something specific ah it doesn't exist |
s | so I'll just say the English words so I |
s | use the fizzers |
s | um dictionary to find an equivalent and |
s | then I'll replace it and that one is in |
s | the dictionary and then boom I have a |
s | proper uh sentence and then after you |
s | know sometimes we also use the thesaurus |
s | to change the word just because it's uh |
s | it's not easy to pronounce or it doesn't |
s | have a rhythm almost as music you know |
s | that is like Punchy enough and when we |
s | have an intro cinematic or something |
s | that needs to to be Punchy we try we |
s | change the sentence |
s | um in a translator because vogelang has |
s | a translator uh app that lets you do |
s | that so it's quite awesome yeah I know |
s | it's amazing because I did that we were |
s | looking for a name for uh one of the |
s | avatars of corruption right this this |
s | Infamous mysterious Mythic figure and |
s | and I put in the black void I actually |
s | typed in the black void and it popped up |
s | with netanyek and I'm like what a great |
s | if I just sat there thinking of a name I |
s | could not have come up with that name |
s | but I put what I wanted he's the black |
s | void boom like that's fantastic that's |
s | fantastic again happy accident maybe but |
s | what a great happy accident |
s | I said dude it is a kind of AI do you |
s | see AI contributing to language Creation |
s | in any way yeah we're looking at Chad |
s | GPT |
s | um Austin degrees are or delete is um |
s | experimenting with that right now and I |
s | don't know what we'll be able to do in |
s | the future it's still early on but yeah |
s | it won't be long we won't need writers |
s | here's the big question though players |
s | want to know is like how do do they |
s | understand the corrupted language it's |
s | subtitled in the game what's the |
s | explanation |
s | well that's that's a very good question |
s | uh I see it as the corruption has a very |
s | definite goal that it wants to |
s | accomplish so it wants to be understood |
s | so it's almost once it gets into your |
s | system I'll compare the corruption to a |
s | virus once it infuses you and goes all |
s | through your body it almost like you |
s | start now understanding almost on a DNA |
s | level you start understanding what this |
s | thing wants and so they can communicate |
s | with each other of course it's important |
s | for a corrupted to communicate with |
s | humans because it wants something it |
s | wants them to do something |
s | so yeah that's how I see it it's almost |
s | like a language that's spoken in your |
s | blood you know you you have some you |
s | have The Whispers too yeah oh yeah yeah |
s | yeah yeah yeah no the whispers are great |
s | I love whenever we introduce The |
s | Whispers I kept I told Rob this is a |
s | great thing I love The Whispers come on |
s | the you know I mean so it's important to |
s | call out because some characters can |
s | speak corrupted the way we think of it |
s | is that you know when and when a person |
s | becomes corrupted they immediately are |
s | zapped with demon speak right like |
s | they've been infected by this Alien |
s | Force From Another Dimension this this |
s | corrupting evil and this immediately |
s | gives them the ability to speak this |
s | demonic tongue but they don't forget |
s | their old language so sometimes you'll |
s | hear characters like Isabella or Thorpe |
s | you know they'll still speak their |
s | native tongues |
s | um but in the case of like players |
s | understanding like the corrupted dialect |
s | or the Lost dialect like I think of it |
s | like Luke Skywalker understanding R2D2 |
s | like you're like oh okay yeah oh R2 |
s | um it's a there's a little willful |
s | suspension of disbelief you |
s | you would I be able to compare the |
s | in the game yeah because it's a natural |
s | language yeah they're from the same uh |
s | family yeah corrupted all corrupted |
s | should use the same language yeah |
s | and I think that I mean that's a natural |
s | segue to our community question which I |
s | think would be really good which is you |
s | know if you if if what to players what |
s | what language would you like to see more |
s | samples of that you might uh be able to |
s | then translate and figure out how the |
s | language actually works we'd be happy to |
s | share some of that if you'll let us know |
s | and if you like the show Please |
s | Subscribe because it lets us know that |
s | you want to keep seeing us or others |
s | like us |
s | um and let us know that you want us to |
s | keep going |
