RuneScape's art style 2001-2006: Realistic proportions. Armor and weapons that look inspired by real Medieval armor and weapons. Earthy, gritty realistic tones and colors. No exaggerated, flamboyant, huge armor and weapons with 20 spikes stuck on it and flashy colors.

Someone mentioned that it was more "sword and sorcery" style. A part of that is more focus on humans than other fantasy races. Non-human races are less prominent in RS than other MMOs, you can't even play as them, and most quests involve mostly humans, most areas are populated by humans.

Starting around 2007, newer HD style models started being introduced. We end up with what you have in RS3 now, which looks like a the generic high fantasy MMO.

Not only that, all the new updates in OSRS are using the newer generic high-fantasy MMO style.

Just one example.

(There was a recent post which shows how it looks like a complete ripoff from WoW as well). Huge flamboyant flashy robes with unnecessary spikes, and that purple color that all new content seems to have (just look at Zeah).

Did all the people with the original vision for RuneScape's style just leave Jagex, and since almost all other MMO's have that high fantasy style, newer employees are only familiar with that? Is this acknolwedged at all by Jagex?

Yes, actually. You hit the nail on the head exactly.

The funny thing is... the original assets for RS2 were mostly out sourced via the internet! Hence why they vary wildly in style and quality. Around 2005/6 was when they started increasing the staff to work on art.

In fact, one of the original artists told me that his flat mate made a large chunk of the original monsters for the slayer skills release.

I’ve also played the game since 2004. I’m not saying that qualifies me for a ‘correct opinion’ but it shows that everyone’s opinion on what is ‘old school’ varies person to person, regardless of background.

That being said, Im aiming to lean towards a more medieval style in the future for my work. It’s still a fantasy game though and we shouldn’t forget that!

Also... The vision I try to keep to is based around areas like Varrock and Canifis, hopefully the recent Hosidius rework is a good example of this.

The recent hosidius was a very good indicator of things to come. I was really not a fan of the lance, as it was to high fantasy, but i think you have a good head on your shoulder, are very talented, and have a good vision for the game. I hope to see you continue making timeless gear and designs like the new hosidius.

I think the lance (while I don’t hate the final product) was a situation of design by committee. The elements were decided on via a straw poll, but ultimately there wasn’t much variety and choice. I feel that method worked well for Dihns Bulwark but that was always going to be a big shield. The lance could’ve been less jousting and more war-lance.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but as someone who played from the start of RS2 until around 2005 I actually prefer the old "crap" assets to the new ones.

Picking up the same again when OSRS launched was a bit of a shock as apparently a decent amount had changed between 2004-07.

Not holding my breath for 2004scape though.

2007 was the earliest backup that was available unfortunately :(

what was your opinion on the swap from 2.5D (classic) to 3D (RS2)?

Awesome to hear that you intend to stick to medieval style art!

Not entirely medieval, I should say, just less high fantasy and more low fantasy. Think things like GoT (although that’s pushing it) and Arthurian legend.

New hosidius is wonderful, in my opinion, so more along that theme is great to hear.

👍

The artist we need but don't deserve. Amazing job on the environments and layout of Prif btw. Really quality stuff.

Thanks! I thoroughly enjoyed making the rooftops, however little players see of them :P

are you talking about the reworked varrock with those ugly as f**k guards?

That’s the one! Personally not a fan of those guards but the environment is nice.

No kidding. I was just a kid in 2007 and only got to experience so much of it before I had to grow up with post-HD RS2, yet I've come to form some conservative opinions on the game's visuals.

For instance, a fresh and new one at that, the dragonstone armor. I personally consider it sacred that no armor in OSRS should have random gems or glowing lights no matter the reasoning... You can imagine my shock when I found out you went and chucked something just like that into the game.

(Late edit but best if clarified: In retrospect the word I was looking for was "meaningless" and I don't mean to say armor can't have shiny-glowie elements; the obsidian armor pulls it off quite nicely)

I do mostly like your environments, but my tastes just don't allow me to appreciate your equipment designs as consistently.

Interesting perspective! Has someone equipped the full set of the dragon stone armour yet? I tried to be quite restrictive on how many gems I placed on each piece, keeping it sensible. It looks nothing like the RS3 version, if that means anything :P Although I’m sure it’ll be accused of being ‘RS3’ as is the trend :( unsure what it even means at this point.

I thought I saw some gems on the gloves of your recent piece 🤔 it stuck out to me as I’d put a gem in the exact same place for the dstone set and noted we couldn’t make them as small as yours :P really liked that staff though... wish you’d made that before the last TT update. Maybe for the next one! I have it saved :)

That’s fair! I have made missteps in the past with some items. I suppose though, if you look back at your old work and think it’s better than your current pieces, you’re probably doing something wrong...

Keep up the good work dude :)

I did really like your hosidius rework a lot, but the character models for the new quest look very disproportional to just about every other NPC in OSRS. Every NPC uses a a small palette of moderate colours and no shading, but the newest models use very vibrant colours and shading. Also the models look quite high-poly compared to the old models, which isn't always a good thing. Their proportions are also wildly different from every other NPC in OSRS.

Thanks :)

You’re correct in a way. When using 2004 style assets as an example, there is a lot of block colour and chunky graphics but when you move more towards 2007, suddenly a lot more colours/shades and more organic shapes appear. For instance: The godwars bosses, the various NPC updates (goblins, demons, dragons, bears etc), cave goblins and metal dragons... to name a few.

I have lived in our model repository for the past 3 years, I know my assets :P
