It's a long read, but we'd love your feedback.

We talk Soul Wars and the Old School changes we're going to make for it.

Minigame improvements for:

  • Last Man Standing
  • Trouble Brewing
  • Ferox Enclave
  • Barbarian Assault
  • Castle Wars
  • Puro-Puro
  • Shades of Mort'ton (this is a hefty rework!)

Do you mean scenery?

Love the massive blog post, we got alot of new cool things to look forwards too. I just have to mention one thing -

A point to be made for any further Last Man Standing map creations is to address the fact that people are running circles around large house objects to avoid being killed. The wild varrock map proposed seems to have a lot of buildings so I just want to make sure that's taken that into consideration to stop people from griefing/stalling LMS games (remove ladders too pls). Also fixing the keys/chests/crates from giving you duplicate (inferior?) items during the game would be nice. Other than that new maps would be greatly welcomed.

The latest iteration of the map has fewer ladders and houses, I'll aim to share that soon.

Unsure on Graceful, I'll enquire.
We've removed the Fight Pits offering due to this initial wave of feedback.
The Reward shop was discussed but it's a bigger project than we're offering in this instance.

We've tweaked the blog to remove the Fight Pits section. It was listed as a 'maybe', and the initial feedback is enough for us to reconsider :)

I'd like to clarify something with Soul Wars.

The original avatar damage system used your slayer level against the 1-100 number to damage it. So if you dropped the avatar to 90%, only someone with 90 slayer or higher would damage it. Is this no longer the case? I'm assuming it's not, but it didn't explicitly say otherwise.

On a similar note, burying bones had a chance to do nothing (not restore avatar level) when burying them in your team graveyard, has this been left out of the proposed version?

The Slayer link has been removed. Now it's a general % based damage mitigation that's reduced by using soul fragments. Any Slayer level can damage the Avatar.

Unsure on the chance to do nothing. I'll find out.

From the blog:

Slayer was central to the gameplay of the original minigame. We've made a number of changes to remove the skill from Soul Wars:

Originally there was a Slayer level requirement to damage Avatars (which began at 100 and was reduced by using soul fragments on the Soul Obelisk). We've replaced this with a general damage reduction mechanic - all damage dealt is initially reduced by 100%, making them immune (this percentage is reduced by using soul fragments on the Soul Obelisk).

And another section:

Initially, all damage dealt to them will be reduced by 100% (making them immune to all damage), but this percentage can be reduced to 0% by using the Soul Obelisk (see below).

The Soul Obelisk can be used to weaken the Avatars by lowering their damage reduction percentage. As mentioned above, both Avatars reduce all damage dealt to them by 100% (making them immune to all damage). However, this percentage can be reduced down to 0%. To do this, a team must sacrifice soul fragments to the Soul Obelisk. This can be done regardless of which team controls the Soul Obelisk, but sacrifices from the team that doesn't control it are only worth 1/3 of the contribution.

Having a soul wars match end early if too many people leave will probably be exploited by clans and alts. Similar things already happen at castle wars regularly.

Do you think restricting SW to few worlds like we propose would help to mitigate this?

To be very honest, the game was ass, but the rewards were so good they were well worth it.

I've seen some awesome Guild concepts, including Runecraft. We discussed including Guilds here, but we want to be make sure any Guild project gets the time and resource it needs. We're considering it for '21.

Yes, but it may be a good idea to have some of the worlds only have access to the green portal. Not knowing what team you will be on could prevent clans from stacking one side.

That's a solid shout. I'll pass it on.

I've got some additional ba suggestions that would be pretty unanimously appreciated in the community if you guys are looking for more. I don't know how possible some of them are, of course.

  • Re-add the ability to click through interfaces while on the cannon. (Previously, penance death messages, divine potions, and broken trap messages could just be spam clicked to remove. We'd like it back, its annoying to constantly press space to get rid of them.)

  • Allow players to do low and medium gambles regardless of current wave. (The process is horrible currently, you have to leave mid round to gamble.)

  • Allow teams to play with 4 players.

  • Increase the time it takes to be booted from the team while stalled in the wave by 1 tick. (Currently, if you shoot the cannon right as the wave is ending you'll be kicked from the team automatically. Increasing the time it takes by 1 tick would fix this.)

  • Make it clear that leveling up will use up your points on the rewards screen. (I see players accidentally level all the time when they just want the torso.)

  • Some kind of reward rework. (Most of the penance set is frankly bad, and there are some gamble loots that could be removed or swapped out. I'm sure you guys have seen suggestions before.)

  • Remove or change the medium diary requirement for 1 wave of ba. (While it has good intentions of pushing players to play, it really just ends up being impossible to find a team for just one wave, so players join a team and ditch after wave 1.)

Thanks a lot!

Perhaps we could try to allow those types of accounts to access the minigame too. I'll raise it!

I wouldn't say it's off the table, but we aren't offering it here. This type of content 'porting' opens the doors to future backports, perhaps quests.

We could encourage players to hop worlds, but not make it mandatory. I expect that change to be made on Monday!

Gonna sneak in here real quick. Like Trailblazer I'm handling the marketing of Soul Wars. Aside from nostalgia (which I've got covered), what do you think Soul Wars has that I should be shouting the loudest about?

While perhaps not special outside of OSRS, capturing points is something unique to it. Might be worth showing it is about capturing points, but as part of fighting a big boss rather than just capturing points and fighting players. Also, the exp rewards allowing it to be a training method while still earning other rewards will likely appeal to a lot of players.

The strategic element is certainly part of my current plan. I don't really want to call it a MOBA inside OSRS but it share a ton of the same DNA so I've been toying with that angle and attempting to Old School-up the concept.

Teamwork/coordination is key. I remember back in the day when obelisk control was vital to avatar slaying and people would jump into CC's and organize their fragment dumps with the higher level players at the avatar to spec dump. Coordinating huge pushes at the end of the game to swing the score in their favor.

Everyone can contribute it's not all about pvp. Lower level players are just as effective and important for fragment collecting and bone burying.

It's not all about offensive prowess, defending/controlling graveyards and the obelisk are just as important as killing the avatar.

It's not all about winning it's about having fun with other like minded players, everyone is rewarded for their contribution at the end of the day.

See that's what I'm looking forward to the most. I suck at PvP in every game (except War Thunder) but oh BOY am I a great healer or ammo runner whatever, I like to be helpful you know? Really hoping that attitude comes back along with Soul Wars.

I loved the Trailblazer trailer! The only problem I saw with it was the narrator reading the full description of all of the starting relics. That is too much detail for a trailer in my opinion. Giving players the basic idea of each relic is enough, as they will presumably be able to find the full details in game, on the wiki, on the official website, etc. if they care enough. A second video with full details about mechanics and restrictions for the league could also be helpful. I'm thinking along the lines of League of Legends "champion spotlights"

Ah, see that was deliberate. One of the things that happened with Twisted League that I'm trying to avoid this time is that some folks weren't sure what Leagues was all about and wanted to wait until it started to get that info from streamers etc. Then of course they waited "too long" and felt they couldn't catch up so ended up skipping it.

The way I thought about it, if we put out poll blogs which has all the details of upcoming content in the main game with really niche details like exact XP rates etc then I could add a little more info to this without ruining everything.

Please make the rewards worthwhile. We already have pest control, don't need another version of it. Bring back the slayer aspect of Soul Wars. With all the recent slayer updates it's barely a viable method for training slayer, but it brings a key point of difference. Don't want it dead after a week with only pet hunters left.

I'm the marketing guy. If I went into a dev meeting and started talking about how to balance rewards they'd politely escort me out and close the door behind me. As it should be.

That's a really interesting comparison, absolutely adding that to the reference materials for inspiration.

I will second the importance of being able to click the cave as an attacker. It's not just leeching that it matters-- also big in runs with 2 healers, which is the fastest way to play the minigame currently. I cut some examples together here to show how useful a quick reposition can be.

Even if the defender "blocking" caves part had to be removed, maybe you could just throw in a (possibly toggleable) option that keeps the repositioning elements intact? Maybe an "inspect" option, that still has you run to the cave, but spits out some fluff text?

Could we not remove blocking tunnels in BA? It's currently very useful for those who solo attacker in leeches as it allows them to path north without clicking on monsters. Removing this would make it more difficult.

I appreciate the example, and the j-pop
