I really wish Owlcat would make DLCs that expand and enrich the main game instead of just sitting alongside it as a separate experience (with occasional small interactions). I think the coolest thing about these games is the very deep systems of choice and reactivity, followed by all the interesting ways to build and equip your characters. Separate side-stories don’t really plug into the former, and are too short/cover too few levels for the latter.
The best Kingmaker DLC was Wild Hearts for this exact reason, IMO. It was the smallest by far, but it added a fun companion and a relatively long questline that gave some cool stuff and had plenty of decision points and reactivity. Meanwhile, Varnhold’s Lot was a trudge. I don’t want to play someone else that I’ll abandon after level 10, I want to play my character. Same deal with Inevitable Excess. Beneath the Stolen Lands was ok-ish except it was 99% about endless combat with trash mobs, which is IMO the most dull part of these games.
Why can’t we just expand the main game? Especially given how empty act 5 feels and how much smaller the map feels vs. Kingmaker, the game really seems ripe for a bigger experience with new companions, adventures, threats, and places to explore. Just to throw out some (probably mediocre) ideas, what if the map was expanded to include part of Mendev, and let us get involved in political maneuvering and demonic plots there? What if in chapter 5, the forces of Hell decide to capitalize on the Demon's defeats, and mount a major offensive into the Abyss? Think about how Regill vs. Seelah would react, or a Devil vs. Azata main character. What if Pazuzu or another Demon Lord decided to get involved?
Bottom line, there's a ton of untapped potential to expand the game in ways that increase it's scope and highlight the best parts (reactivity, choice, and customization), but Owlcat seems to be leaning into IMO the worst parts (repetitive combat against trash mobs, puzzles, and linear side-stories with different characters that don't enhance the main experience).
