Hey guys! This isn't directly Pathfinder-related, but I thought it's a good place to address you anyway with something that might be worth your attention. Hope you forgive me for this little intrusion.

Some of you may remember how many years ago, we as a studio had a rather rough start with Pathfinder: Kingmaker, where the game turned out to be so big and ambitious that we failed to deliver the quality in time. We had disastrous technical issues at launch.

Only thanks to your continuious trust in us, your support and your patience, we were able to recover, eventually fixing what was broken, continuing to do what we love and slowly growing into the studio you know today. You've literally saved us, and how much we are thankful to your patience back then (and to our other hiccups over the course of our history that, well, do happen sometimes) is immeasurable.

But why am I talking about this?

For some time, I've been tracking the development of a game called Millenia (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1268590/Millennia/) by a small indie studio C Prompt Games, published by our good friends at Paradox.

In essense, this game is a fresh take on 4x Civilization-like genre with a lot of cool new ideas and mechanics, and a very interesting choice-driven concept of each historical age having 2-4 alternative history versions of it. Age of Alchemy, Age of Steampunk, Age of alien invasion, anyone? There's a crazy amount of these ages (30+ or something) and they each alter gameplay and offer unique new systems and challenges.

A-a-nd... I can't help but feel that the guys from C Prompt are right now in a similar situation to where we were with Kingmaker. Same as us, they've overextended a bit and underdelivered on release, coming out with serious technical issues and without multiplayer.

But similar to us, they've also been working intensely for a while to address these issues and implement community feedback. After half a year, they've more or less dealt with the key issues by now, but due to the rough start, the game is still criminally underrated and unknown to the wide audience.

This saddens me greatly, because it is a hidden gem that absolutely blew my mind by how massive and ambitious it is, how many systems are in it, and how much is going on there. The game is filled with love and passion, and I had similar cozy vibes playing it, that I had when I myself started playing Pathfinder for the first time.

So I wondered - what if we can extend a helping hand to fellow indie devs?

Today they're having their first DLC release and open up the public beta for multiplayer, and I know you guys love large, complicated games with number-crunchy systems, that are packed with content and choice.

I also know that you can be somewhat forgiving to the passionate devs with burning hearts, who release ambitious projects and continue to improve them, even if they turn out a bit rough on the edges at the start.

If you enjoy 4x games, how about you check it out, give your feedback, and rate it on Steam if you enjoy it?

Never hurts to improve some karma, I believe :)

Thanks for your attention!

I so wanted MIllenia to be good... Didn't buy it solely because of bad reviews and the issues the game had. It looked awesome.

I've been playing it a lot recently and it is absolutely worth checking out at the moment. They've fixed a lot of the complaints since release.

I bought it during pre-release and for some reason, I never really "got" it. I've played Civ since Civ I and I guess I'm looking at it wrong. The expansion part is beyond me. I expanded to another city but it seemed like they were individual city-states and were never "connected". I can't really explain it, I attacked another city-state thinking they were barbarians and they roll-stomped me. Later I got roll-stomped by actual barbarians and gave up because there was no way I could decrease their number (that I could find). I rage-quit and refunded shortly after that.

The expansion cities start out as vassals that you need to integrate later to make them a real city.

Paradox is not any way a "huge" publisher. It's as indie as they come, being about 50 times smaller than, say, EA

Sums for each game vary a lot, and I don't think Millenia has received all that much. Regardless, my main point here is that it's a cool game that's worth attention :)

Oooh, I saw a lot of chatter about this a few months ago, and some lets plays, and it seems like an accelerated Civ. I should check it out again xD

To me it feels like Civ5, but with tons of new features. Wouldn't call it accelerated, it plays slower on average, and there's just so much more going on.

Did you even read the reviews? they are all about how the devs are selling dlcs before finishing the base game.

Amount of content in the base game is immense, and it plays pretty well at this point.

That may be true but Paradox management is drunk at best if we're not talking about CK, EU, Vic, or HoI. They recently cancelled a finished Sims like project a few days before the initially planned release because why the F not. I feel like these guys need all the help they can get. Just in case.

It never happens because "why not". Cancelling a project on late stages of development is a VERY tough decision and has devastating consequences on finances, reputation and most importantly, morale of the team. It is not done on a whim. It means something went horribly wrong with the development.

We will most likely never know what exactly, but it's really not something to make fun of.

I heard that it was ambitious, but it really didn’t meet its goals. Has it actually become good? Because love and passion alone don’t make a great game. Like, is it actually worth the $70 (base game plus DLC)? Because that’s a fair bit of money for anything short of an EXCELLENT game.

You know that feeling when you play Wrath of the Righteous for the first time and get hit with the realization just how much content there is to explore in the game?I had that when playing this game. 10 basic ages and 20+ more variant ages each with its own mechanics, wow.

It's still a bit rough on the edges in terms of lategame performance and some missing UI QoL features, but it's absolutely playable and worth it to my taste, if you like 4x games.

the people that enjoyed this game seemed immensely disappointed at release, if it's doing better now I'm excited to give it a shot it seems like it's got interesting ideas that are hooking ppl

It's absolutely better now, was playing it for the last few weeks and had a ton of fun. And now you can finally play proper simultaneous multiplayer. It's still in the beta, so ain't completely stable yet, but playable nonetheless.

Imagine if they had released it into early access, taken feedback and finished it for the 1.0 release.

You can't mince meat backwards, unfortunately.

Less to make fun of and more to illustrate the string of bizarre and counterproductive decisions being made at Paradox Publishing.

There are so many factors invisible to the public that can cause such decisions, that it's really not productive to discuss without having all the details. It's not like they intentionally wanted to make things worse.

This exactly. They've had 3 (I think?) big updates since release.

4 afaik, 5 if you count yesterday's.

I do like 4X games. Okay, thanks!

Also, you guys ever consider picking up Deathwatch? Y’all pretty much have the FFG ruleset programmed, and it comes with classes already designed. Could make for an interesting RPG.

We've considered a lot of things, and of course we're aware of Deathwatch's existence. What we picked in the end I can't say for now though :)

Well… I feel like this is apples and oranges. Kingmaker is a story based game CRPG. I can’t just play a different game and experience the pathfinder experience & story. It’s like books. You can play many and appreciate them individually.

Millennia is a game like civ and many other games. Its main experience is a sandbox and is fine but like… with its genre so full of games it’s difficult to tell people patience and wait when there are similar games. It’s not like im telling 4x players that they need to play a game for its story. It’s kind of the risk with a sandbox 4x.

I wish Millennia and the dev team the best but they chose a HARD genre to break into.

Of course! But often people enjoy both genres. I do, for example.
