[2022] Gamebreaking bug in the Aeon mythic quest?

While visiting Areelu's lab during Aeon mythic quest, I've run into a potentially crippling bug.

The bug occurs after completing exiting the Lab through the portal. In the cutscene, the first rift to the past opens, the encounter with Areelu starts loading... and then the game crashes to the main menu with this error message.

I've reloaded past saves several times, both within the Lab and from before entering it. I've tried different party combinations, did different quests beforehand - the result's always the same. No mods were being used when this happened.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Is there any way to fix this bug, or maybe bypass it by using Toybox?

Toybox causes a lot of bugs. Uninstall it.

Many mods irreversibly change the save file, so it usually won't help to uninstall it if the game was run with it at least once. The only exception is if you start a new game after.

There was also a different error message that popped up a couple of times; it said that the file from the screen shot above could not be read and was likely corrupted. Can this be fixed by reinstalling the game, potentially downloading a non-broken version of the file?

Sounds like a corrupt file, can be fixed by checking file integrity in Steam.
