If I fail to defer an item it will expire after a couple of zones.

Sometimes I waypoint to a zone (zone A) purely to go to another adjacent zone (zone B). I've been feeling obligated to hit rituals in zone A to make sure I don't end up with deferred rewards expire in zone A.

I feel like, ideally, items should not progress towards expiration if you "run through" a zone and do not interact with any of the rituals. But I have not had a good opportunity to verify if this is the case.

Does anyone know if there is such a mechanic in place? If not, it might be a great QoL feature for GGG to add to the league, IMO. I feel like game mechanics are generally better if you can engage with them if/when you want, without being punished for taking a break from it.

If you don't interact with Ritual at all in that zone, you aren't at risk of losing an item you've deferred.

Don't click the altar.
