Well, it's more than that, really.

Yes, whaling is a problem and it did factor into our decision, but not nearly as much as our overall dislike of the whale mechanic, which we wanted to get rid of.

We were also hoping to remove Navalons for a while, too, and so it all kinda came together.

  • Remove whales

  • Swap them for a new mechanic

  • Find a new graphic to show that we changed things.

Sorry if I made the impression that it was only to remove references to irl whaling.

Can you go into detail about why you wanted to remove Navalons?

It's just not something we want in the game, both because it doesn't fit our idea of naval but also because we'd like to take Elyrion in a different direction.

Why not keep whales but change the mechanic?

Well, that doesn't solve the "we want to get rid of whales" requirement.

Forgive me, but you specifically said “but not nearly as much as our overall dislike of the whale mechanic,” but I guess the desire was still high enough to keep the image of whaling out of the game.

Yeah, pretty much.

As I said, it was multi-faceted, and that's not even mentioning how Midjiwan wanted to replace it with something more Polytopian, hence the Starfish.

What different direction? Has anything new been added for Elyrion? Their whales were the best.

Not yet, but we plan to rework them in the near future.
