Since Ubisoft has at least acknowledged and consolidated my posts about broken shield MECHANICS
Lets talk about the balance


1st
We should consider
"What is the role of a shield?"
The purpose of a shield, is to PUSH defenders off positions
How can a shield do that if


2nd:
Shields should be balanced from the bottom up
As in, make the most basic shield, without any gadget (eg Fuze shield) viable
And then go from there


The current issue with shield balance is because shields THEMSELVES are so weak, specialized shields have their gadgets be excessively strong to compensate
Having a gadget make/break your ability to even function is very frustrating, for users and victims
As blitz, you either full-blind your opponent, near-guaranteeing you a kill
Or you flash misses (or your opponents are smart and never let you get close) and you are basically useless

This is why Monty is frequently banned
Blitz, not so much as the recent guard break changes, combined with him only being 2 armor, makes him laughably easy to deal with, simply by chucking an impact or 2 at him

Any other non-shield operator, even WITHOUT their gadget is useful
As they can hold angles
Get kills
etc

A shield without its gadget is unfairly helpless in most situations
Since they cant hipfire worth ****
They have to ADS to do anything
Which makes them basically just an OP with a pistol- incredibly weak

Take the above clip for example

The fact that hipfire was unable to land any hits is laughable
At THAT close range
Crouched
Not moving
Not being shot in the shield
(Can we seriously allow a laser on the GSH already?)

If you demand that Shields ADS in order to engage threats, even for self defense, then what is the point of a shield in a game where deaths are usually headshot anyways?
Exposing your head cancels out the entire purpose and function of a shield

Im kinda iffy on the melee mechanics for shields
Frankly, id prefer shield melee if it DIDNT insta down, but only did, say 50 damage (maybe even less)
And then the melee animation, instead of exposing the user, was simply a forward bash, that kept the shield between them and the threat
BUT, defender melee on a shield didnt cause total guard break either
And of course, SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the range on melee


Of course, if we buff CORE shield mechanics, such that shields are
-Able to defend themselves effectively
-Can effectively PUSH defenders

Their currently oppressive gadget mechanics (which is the only thing currently keeping them BARELY relevant) will need tweaks to prevent them from becoming OP

Hey MadDog. Definitely looks like you put a fair bit of thought in here to various problems that you see represented with shields from your side of things! To take things a step further, if you weree to have fixes or solutions to any of these problems, what would they look like?

The concept of our reworking of shield melee is definitely a new take. How do you think that change would be met by the community as a whole, combined with the fixed shield perspectives? Fully protected from the front, fully protected while meleeing which can down someone with two hits, with a more consistent pistol is a great concept, but I feel like there are folk that would feel like that could be a bit much to play against. Definitely curious to hear your and the communities thoughts on this.
