TL;DW 474 - Road to Archaeology #1

The below information are topics covered during today's stream. I will make a Megathread containing ALL info at a later date.

Archaeology is still expected to come out on March 30th.

The situation around COVID-19 is still being accessed daily.

General

  • Yaktrack 2 - March 23rd.
  • Agility Icon decorations
are being added to every shortcut in the game alongside Archaeology.
    • We will gather feedback from players to see if needs to be changed post-release.
    • This update also helped us create a very easy put-in-place system to map down agility spots.
  • Skill Guide update
    - More detailed level-up info. & Clicking an item will show info about that item.
  • Skillcape Hoods - The hoods of retro skillcapes are currently the normal version. There's a job to fix this.

Archaeology

Retro-Skillcape

| 99 Cape
| 120 Cape
| Archie Special Attack

Map Icons

| Skill Guide - Archaeology

  • MQC - Requires completing mysteries which can require up to 119 Archaeology. (6 month amnesty period).
  • You won't need need an agility level to access dig sites.
  • Mattocks work the same as pickaxes as tools.
  • There are skillcape perks/emotes for 99/120 but they won't be revealed yet.

Roadmap

Our leadership style is bring certainty to everything. We are well intended. We are looking at 2020 from what we can deliver and from all the things people care about (Quests, PvM, Skilling).

  • Roadmap Strategy - Quarterly. (Nothing date-by-date or month-by-month).
    • We will build up updates with trailers/videos/easter-eggs.
    • Easter Egg example: Archaeology key art changed to include little bits of story telling.
  • Engine/Tech Side: Improving text & UI scaling, and Mobile.
    • Goal: Give the best experience for each person.
  • MTX: We've done a ton of TH experimentation and received fantastic feedback.
  • Tentpole content - Our highest quality content.
    • Archaeology is an example and we plan on working on another by the end of the year.
    • We want to implement these without shifting updates.

Archaeology Guild

Main Features

Also known as The Varrock Digsite. The entire area is considered the guild.

  • Mysterious monolith (center) - Where you control and activate relics.
    • Currently in-game but doesn't look like this yet.
  • Screening Station (east) - Where you filter soil for materials.
  • Exam center (south) - Where you control research/researchers.
  • Guild HQ (west) - The hub where you access information and teleport to digsites.

Tutorial

  • Starts to the east on the dock.
  • The tutorial teaches you the basics of the skill and then sends you off to the first digsite (Kharid-Et).
    • There will still be various aids beyond the tutorial.
  • There will be a playthrough on a future livestream.

Guild HQ

  • The Office - Your personal area containing qualifications, Archaeology Journal, Skillcape, etc.
  • Archaeology Journal - Displays qualifications, achievements, relic powers, research, artefacts, and mysteries.
    • A pocket-slot item that can also be used as a teleport to the Guild.
    • Players can access the Collections interface and Restoration Log as well.
    • Restoration Log
      - Keeps track of items you've restored and awards a title if you find all within a category.
  • Digsite Map
    - Allows you to fast travel. (With keyboard shortcuts). Located in your office.
  • Display Case
    - Contains a certain Mattock.

Other

  • The new trees cannot be cut.
  • The teleports are accessible upon completing the tutorial (and the respective levels).
  • The Digsite pendant has been adjusted to be more convenient.

Digsites

These are only the surface level of the digsites. The rest is being kept for players to discover on release.

General Information

  • Site Manager
    - A person who provides info about each site.
  • Material Cache
    - Caches located away from the main site which guarantee a certain material and soil.
  • Excavation Spots
    - Obtain artefacts, materials, and soil.
    • Surveying Option
      - Displays the core items (not all) you can get from that spot.
  • Material Carts
    - Deposit boxes only for materials. They are located at various spots around digsites.
    • Porters are way more useful but these are for people without those.

Interactions

Each digsite has it's own narrative/mystery. Some of these are like miniquest, some are more elaborate.

  • Mystery - At an excavation spot there's a chance you will discover lore. (Similar to journals DG).
    • The RNG isn't obnoxious.
    • Every single mystery upon completion provides a chunk of XP.
  • Study Interactions - Located in every dig site. Studying can allow you to unlock some special research/rewards.
  • Exploration - A number of things not found in the journal, or are mysteries.
    • Example: Statue of Mesomedes
      - they aren't all the same and can have different interactions/rewards.

Other

  • Kharid-Et will contain a flyover of the digsite and various pop-ups to help guide players towards the beginning of the skill.
  • You can get uncharted island maps while excavation.
  • Bad-Luck Mitigation: If you require an object to progress by a certain level, you will be guaranteed it.

Few points:

  • I am unsure if the Agility icon is for all spots with Arch launch, or just all Arch spots. Mod Ryan or Iago might be able to confirm either way for sure.
  • The agility obstacle streamlining was very much building on the work Mod Ramen and/or Mod Erator and our artists started with Anachronia.
  • I think Warden said "tent pole updates" not "temple updates" - as in key updates that prop up the whole

Great work as always!

Why the hell is Yak Track coming out a week before archaeology? Idk what this new track will be like, but the last one took me way more than a week. I feel like people are going to be conflicted between Yak Track and wanting to grind arch. IMO yak track should have been released at the beginning of March, or at the end of April. Jagex always seems to bunch updates together.

This kind of feedback was given a lot when we released yack track around farming & herblore 120. As a result we are making sure you can do both at the same time

People are noooooot gonna be happy with the 119 arch tag on mqc, but I love it. Shouldn't limit the requirements of it because too hard or w/e

I think more will be happy than not. It's been a long time before comp/trim/MQC have been given substantial new requirements. I, for one, am looking forward to getting my MQC back (though I do also still need all the ED jounrnals :\).

The lore drops are RNG based - I think referring to the rate as 'not obnoxious' should give reassurance, though. Compared to some other lore drops, these are much fairer.
