July’s time-limited Adventure, ‘The Forsaken Hunter’, tasked pirates with sleuthing their way across the Sea of Thieves in pursuit of the missing Merrick, and the true culprits have now been revealed. The Dark Brethren – a collection of renegades who once tried to seize control of the Sea of the Damned – have returned to plague the waves. Now Merrick is locked away in their latest base of operations, glimpsed in all its foreboding glory during our recent cinematic trailer.

That means it’s time to swap clues for cannonballs, travel through the nearest archway (with a little help from the Pirate Lord) and take the fight to the Dark Brethren in the Sea of the Damned. But pirates will be on the back foot in such strange territory, and Merrick’s captors certainly won’t surrender him without a fight…

Murderous conspiracies, covert rituals, unwisely buried instructions… Having been absent from Sea of Thieves’ ongoing story for a while, the Dark Brethren’s return to the waves brought about plenty of fresh revelations and set pirates’ tongues wagging in the wake of our (and Merrick[www.seaofthieves.com]’s) previous Adventure, ‘The Forsaken Hunter’.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Dark Brethren court was first convened during the events of Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life[www.seaofthieves.com... Read more

Ahoy Captains! First of all, I’d like to extend a massive thank you to all the Captains of Adventure who have set sail since the launch of Season Seven. It’s been a joy for the team to see your ship names and their stories beginning to come to life on the Sea of Thieves!

We’ve also seen and heard the sentiment around the new Milestone system, so I wanted to explain the thinking behind the system and announce some changes.

What is the intention behind the Milestone system? The intention of this system is to enable you to track the way you uniquely play and the things you like to engage with the most, and then give you rewards for that – letting you customise your ship to become a true reflection of your play style and journey.

In terms of the overall time investment and balance required to progress Milestones, it is intended to be vastly different to Commendations or Seasonal progression in that this is long-term progression, representing your journey over n... Read more

After all the excitement of June[www.rare.co.uk], from the final fight for Golden Sands to the first reveal of the Captaincy features you're currently enjoying, July was always destined for a slightly slower pace. Even more so when Season Seven hopped the fence into August. But that doesn't mean there was nothing going on: for a start, ghost boy Merrick's lethal assailant was at large and in need of unmasking...

Welcome to Season Seven! We hope you’ll agree that it was worth the wait, with a pool of Captaincy features so deep that you can buy and name your own ship and still only scratch the surface. This Season also brings a steady flow of other features, from the traditional sweep of Seasonal rewards to gameplay improvements, balancing adjustments and a bumper bunch of Emporium additions.

To start with, we recommend a quick soak in the official Season Seven content update video, and maybe a dip into the Deep Dive afterwards...

First unveiled as part of this summer’s Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase – via a jaunty musical number, no less – the seventh Sea of Thieves Season is here, heralding the arrival of ship Captaincy! As one of the features most anticipated by our community, we’re excited to give players the chance to name their ships for the first time, try out a wealth of new decorative choices and dive into the Captain’s Logbook to review their accomplishments across the waves.

If you’ve been itching to carve a maritime moniker into a Ship’s Crest and set sail as a Captain, you’ll be glad to know that Season Seven is now available as a free update for all players on Steam.

As with all past Seasons, Season Seven also offers 100 levels of rewards free to all Sea of Thieves players, with summer-themed cosmetics and plenty o... Read more

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share an update on the progress of Season Seven with you all. As we revealed during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase in June, Captaincy is at the heart of Season Seven and this is an update we are hugely excited about.

We believe Captaincy will transform the experience of playing Sea of Thieves, adding deeper meaning and history to every session and every encounter out on the seas, along with the much-requested ability to own and finally name your ship.

However, with such a fundamental update to the game, there is a lot of hidden work to be done in the background. This is an update that brings in a vast range of new stats to track, and has required a complex partnership across our Game, UI and Services teams to bring it to life.

As we started getting closer to the originally stated release date, it became apparent that things were coming in hotter than we liked and there was a real risk of not delivering to the quality and pol... Read more
