As to the feature itself, in the past I have been someone who regularly underestimates how much effort and time are needed to implement features so I can understand where you are coming from, but I'm afraid it isn't accurate. Let's for the sake of debate say hypothetically it was one full day (but it wasn't). That's designers, marketing folks, community managers, QA, monetization, and engineers who are all involved in designing testing and rolling this feature out. That's a full day all those individuals did not work on god balance, map testing, bug fixing, Wandering Market content etc... to develop a feature that wasn't going to come out for a while. The opportunity cost was a real factor.
This is completely optional content that is specific to the Supporter store and we understand that's not for everyone. Also? Really appreciate the feedback. This is something new and we want to understand how folks feel about it.
Thanks for the response. I think you understand that your input here is very appreciated, regardless of the topic at hand.
Game dev has a lot to it, we all know that. A lot of it is your typical bureaucracy when things are being done in a corporate environment as you mentioned, but there's also overhead that ANY new feature has as there's some standard stuff that needs to be done for it (adding a new cosmetic type, implementing back end storage of it, etc etc). I really don't want to undermine the effort a day to day task takes, nor do I want to undermine the work the team does on a daily basis. We are both here because we are passionate about the game, just from different angles.
But, we all know why this is happening right now. The team has said on several occasions that Founder's Packs didn't sell as well as expected. To provide true value for the pricepoint you're charging for these new items, you'd have to do a mini founder's pack, and corporate just can't risk that with how badly they sold in the first place. Therefore, the only option is to create something that doesn't result in the company taking a risk at all and charge a massive price for it - simple mass profit.
If you want feedback, here's mine - none of the difficulties of game dev, in my eyes, excuse the fact that the price point of the feature here is still not proportional to the development time spent on it. I feel like it's not in good faith to argue that adding name colors and Mario Party World should cost the same amount. Furthermore, locking extra slots for global emotes is just not okay IMO, as people have already paid for those emotes in the first place.
I am being genuine with you when I tell you that pricing points like these have put me off spending on this game. Before the prices were known, I was really ready to spend a decent amount on this patch cause I do want the game to succeed, but there isn't a part of me that can justify paying that money no matter the cause. This is additionally soured with the global emotes slots, as that is functionality we already partially paid for just locked away.
Smite cannot afford to do this to its playerbase. The problem is that, as consumers, we know these prices aren't temporary and will just enable even higher price points in the future. That might not be on the table right now, but when enough people buy into it, all that will be left is that nice green line going up for the profitability of this quarter.
Ultimately, this discussion is not productive long term. The damage to the integrity has been done, and enough players already bought into it for the price point not to change.
