This is mostly a superfluous post. I have no truly useful information to share. But I wanted to say, as an artist and animator myself, the stuff in this game is looking truly excellent. I've felt this way through most of the dev cycle and it came up again during the few seconds we saw the Infernals walk around the terrain (recent footage). It was this short scene when the Brute is lumbering along and then darts to face the Exo:

I. Am. BRUTE.

Criticism is OK. People definitely like to be heard and the stuff that's shared with us will not always be perfect. But it's good to think about what you're saying before publicly going to town on the devs. It's also nice to realize when a criticism is subjective and when it's more objective. A mistake or error is objective, an art style is subjective!

It's sometimes better to think about what the devs are are going for and see if they're pulling that off well instead of if they're agreeing with our image for the game.

Keep in mind (and I will too):

  • we are years of away from release
  • models for RTS Games are meant to look good in top-down isometric view first and foremost
  • it's easy to take great & effective things for granted
  • it's very easy to spot the smallest thing that seems out of place to US
  • expectations that are specific will often be met with disappointment
  • Stormgate is a Blizzard style RTS and is thus inspired by some Blizz iconography
  • Warcraft III was made 25 years ago: the graphics still hold up and the models are blocky and pointy

That's it. I was initally just going to say that i was loving the art and animation (because when we see in-game footage it rlly is looking sweet imo) but I think it's also good to put a little bit of extra effort into the criticisms. I am also guilty of it so will be extra cognizant of it in the future.

Definitely and I like the way it’s progressing.

But they also need to sell skins and I wonder if the presentation of the skins in the shop will be more like what we saw in the gamescom trailer: close up and face-to-face with a brief animation.

If we are constantly seeing units close up in promos for new skins and in the shop, then how they look close up will affect the way we feel about the art style of the game, even if that’s not how it looks when actually playing the game.

They’re also in a tough spot promoting the game because showing a new unit from the top down view isn’t as visually impactful as seeing it up close, but how it looks from the top is the ultimate priority, so a lot is being asked from the art right now.

I’d prefer they showed concept art and in-game footage only. But it’s their decision to show in-game models from an unnatural (to RTS) viewpoint so people will judge.

We've gotten this feedback a lot and will likely dial back on our use of close-up camera shots for models that were meant to be seen from RTS camera perspective.
