Here I'm starting a discussion about this recent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBaI3LpKHQk let me know if I should change this to a link type post.

I will expound on some comments I made on the Discord channel.

I would GREATLY prefer they write all dialogue using human writers. I would find this feature extremely immersion breaking in any game, including this one- a game whose mechanics I love. I would find no dialogue and an attempt for atmosphere as more immersive than this.

If it were generating the dialogue itself, its would also be generating aspects of the character itself. Could an ai maybe one day get to a point where I couldn't tell it apart from human writing? Certainly in some contexts but not in any immersive artistic experience for me yet. Maybe in the future- I haven't seen something quality yet but I'm open to the possibility.

Regardless of that I would prefer a human story written by a flawed group of people trying to do their best for each other. side not: Honestly- I'm only three chapters in and I will have oh so much egg on my face if it comes out that it was written by ai- but I thought that was a core motif in the enovella. So I feel the same way about art. It is a human endeavor. Where do I draw the line? I guess its still fuzzy, this is all new. I, for example, wouldn't mind if it were a machine learning assistant was integrated to interpret questions and brought or pointed you to a character, written and designed by writers and game designers, who has dialogue options/opening dialogue that advances that part of the story or tutorial dialogue. Maybe that would be interesting!

I don't really know 🙂 my main point with this ramble is this is a vibes thing for me, I can't provide a dissertation proving my belief should be universal. I have friends and family who work with machine learning. Whatever, nothing is black and white. You get it. We should all be adults and be able to disagree but not judge each other super harshly, at least that's always a goal. But what I stated in my original message is my vote just as someone interested in discussing the game. I only give the long ramble because this is a controversial subject

AI character dialogue would be worse than human written characters and dialogue even for tutorialized sequences like how I interpret the video. AI is rightfully in a legal and ethical mire because many prominent models are being trained off of data nonconsensually scraped from the web. That is a blunt truth I think needs to be acknowledged. Despite that I would like to encourage always to keep conversation polite, kind, and without resentment.

Thank you for reading, please discuss.

Our novella was written by Jack Bentele, a flesh and blood human who is also working on our game narrative.

Stormgate is being made by people. Humans. Is there a potential here for this sort of tech to make our game more immersive in an additive way, without sacrificing human storytelling and voice acting? That’s not a sacrifice we’re willing to make.
