Temtem's 1.0 version is on the horizon

Tamers, rejoice! Today we celebrate that Temtem's final launch date, the day on which version 1.0 will hit digital and physical stores, has already been set.

Mark your calendars, for we have a date on September 6th, 2022!

Temtem is fully launching on September 6th!

September 6th is not only the day we launch our final version and leave Early Access, it's also the day we reach Xbox Series X and S and Nintendo Switch! To all our Tamers out there who have patiently waited for this, thank you, and we're super eager to welcome you onto the Archipelago on September 6th! And to all the tamers who have walked down the Early Access path and stood by us all these years, thank you, we hope you'll enjoy 1.0 and a much busier Archipelago!

Xbox pre-orders are now open

Xbox pre-orders are now available! Like with PS5, you'll be able to choose between the Standard edition, which includes the game in all its glory, or the Deluxe edition, which also comes with an unrevealed, super exclusive set of cosmetic goodies to start your journey in style.

Preorder Xbox's Temtem Standard edition!

Preorder Xbox's Temtem Deluxe edition!

We're unfortunately unable to provide pre-order links for Switch right now, as we're finalizing details on ratings and certification. As soon as pre-order opens we'll make sure to share the links with you!

As for our Steam players, we're happy to announce they'll be able to upgrade to the Deluxe version once version 1.0 hits!

Let's get physical

Keeping this a secret from you has been really difficult, but now the cat's out of the bag!

Temtem is going to have a physical edition! And not only that, we, along with the folks at Humble Games and Final Boss Bundles, are also working on a Collector's Edition Bundle separate from the game for those Tamers who reaaaaally want to immerse themselves in the Archipelago.

Physical edition of the game is pretty self-explanatory, right? Walk into a game store, and pick your solid copy of Temtem for Switch, Xbox Series X&S or PS5. Information on official suppliers and distributors will be shared in the future!

As for the Collector's Edition Bundle, it contains a lovely diorama statue and a set of enamel pins of our oldest partners, the starters. Want to immerse yourself further in the world of the Archipelago? It also includes a Temcard replica of fan-favorites Kinu, Gharunder and Shuine, and a set of three irresistible embroidered patches that will make you feel like you're part of the Narwhal Crew. Or just see it for yourself!

Collector's Edition!

Best part? You can preorder Temtem's Collector's Edition Bundle (without the game) and some other great merch already!

Anything else?

We're going to be talking about the shape and size of version 1.0 relatively soon, so keep an eye out on us, on our many platforms and communication avenues!

And don't forget to, of course, to Temtem up!

We do have plans! There's planned features for post 1.0, some of them reeeeally huge and influential. We do not have plans to add new islands, and the chance to add new Tems is really slim, but there's a lot of content beyond that and we're working on those.
We'll talk about it as we get closer to it, there's a lot that's not public yet!
When we start on a new project we've always planned to balance both!

No new maps or tem tems, which are a majority of the content, makes me believe the game is being put on life support tbh. MMORPGs do not survive with this system of development, content must be added post-launch, actual engaging content. Not small events, like seasonal/holliday micro content.

Is that the kind of content we should expect? Also why no new Tems or Maps? Is it because of the trickling player count?

No, not at all. The Archipelago was always planned as 6 islands, and all monster-catching games have a finite number of creatures. The cycle of making a new island and implementing new tems was around ~9 months, and players would eat it up in ~4 hours. It was unsustainable, and we believe good, new MMO-ish features will actually breathe more life into the game and add to its replay-ability than focusing on creatures and islands. I'd not call the new content "not engaging" until I'd seen it, tbh

Understandable, MMORPGs also need a healthy content-type to add that keeps players busy enough till the next content drop. When might we find out what kind of content this will take shape as?

Pretty soon! We're working on a post with info on 1.0, and it might give you an idea of what to expect for later.

However, scope can always increase. It always does with most games.

With that mentality why even make the game in the first place? It will always take longer to make than people take to go through it, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth making.

and we believe good, new MMO-ish features will actually breathe more life into the game

Given that the MMO parts of Temtem are its objectively worst features, I really can't say I agree with your assessment there.

Scope has, in fact, increased for Temtem a lot, but that doesn't mean it has to increase in a certain way.
I don't think fulfilling the original vision on the game is a reason to counter-argument with "why make the game in the 1st place", but rather the opposite. We wanted to make this game (a much smaller version of this game, actually, but that's life), and if we hadn't we wouldn't be having this convo. We've always tried to explain the MMO focus on Temtem wasn't the usual MMO focus, and I respect your opinion if you don't like those bits. I'd still wait to see if you like the new features or not.

You're completely correct despite Tsukki's protestations. You can't have a monster taming game and then declare you've next to no intentions to add more when they are the most important factor in a monster taming game.

so I guess every other monster-catching game with a finite number of creatures isn't a monster-catching game either?

Every other monster-catching game gets a new sequel every year/other year...or in the case of more recent ones, expansions. They're not MMOs and have expectedly finite lifespans. MMOs are expected to be live services rather than games you constantly replace, and as such must keep expanding to bring in new content in order to maintain an audience.

If Temtem were a single-player game with online functionality, this would not be an issue. It'd be a cute, probably one-off attempt at the genre depending on its sales and online audience like Nexomon. But because you (collectively, not you individually) made it an MMO you cannot shake the basic expectations or requirements foisted upon you. Player retention is already bad and while you might get some more players during the 1.0 launch, if the current state of early access is any indication they aren't going to stick around for long.

And that retention thing is, again, an MMO-exclusive problem. Single-player games only rely on the upfront sales. But MMOs need people to come in and stick around, buy microtransaction things, buy expansion packs, what have you. You need the audience to constantly buy in. Which means audience retention is vital. Granted, Temtem cheats this by having an upfront cost (an absurdly high upfront cost for what it is IMO) but that only kicks the can down the road.

I don't think Coromon got a sequel, and Shin Megami Tensei definitely doesn't add many monsters on their new sequels. Some are MMOs, and some aren't. I think you're trying to force Temtem into being one thing or the other, when it's a mixture of both, with its pros and cons.I linked the FAQ before, so you can see we define "The core idea behind Temtem is to build a classic adventure game with a focus on the story campaign, but with online elements added around it (seeing other people online, interacting with them to battle, trade, or just to talk and share experiences)." which is pretty much what you quoted would make the current situation fine.Player retention is fine for an Early Access, and the data you see is usually only limited to Steam. And, for the 3rd time, content is planned and will be added to the game. If it's not the content you'd like to see that's one different beast.

"The core idea behind Temtem is to build a classic adventure game with a focus on the story campaign, but with online elements added around it (seeing other people online, interacting with them to battle, trade, or just to talk and share experiences)."

But instead you made an MMO complete with many of the trappings (excessive grind, etc). To me that looks like mission failed right at the start. (EDIT: I mean, if you wanted to focus on the story campaign that's already a huge red flag for MMO as a medium, because while many MMOs have stories, they are ultimately secondary to the gameplay loop because again MMOs require constant attention & retention. If story is your focus it'd be a single-player game with online functionality a la Gen V-VIII PMMN.)

Also

and Shin Megami Tensei definitely doesn't add many monsters on their new sequels

Even if I overlooked how absurdly large the megaten roster actually has been from the start, that's just not true. They really have. They do also remove some between games or completely redesign others but your general point there is just false. Also didn't Coromon only just come out this year? Bad choice of example there, too.

I, again, think it's early to be so sure of how the final version of the game and grind will look like.
SMT switches their roster around, but, massive as it was, doesn't add 20 new creatures for every sequel.
And if you think Coromon is a bad example because it launched this year imagine Temtem, who hasn't even launched yet.

We could go in circles for hours. Your idea of what an MMO/Monster-catching game isor should be is not the same as ours, and that's fine. Different strokes for different folks.

Ok a few things.

1st, congratulations. Its been a long time and its good to finally be here. I'm glad this game was made, and though i have mixed feelings about the game its had its moments.

2nd. The endgame island looks dope

Now the negative stuff.

Why Sept 6? I know no one is gonna agree with me here but i feel like Temtem got some popularity from how bad SWSH was. Wouldn't it have made more sense to capitalize on that crowd again and realize after Scarlet and Violet?

Also I'm' curious if there are going to be any patches before 1.0, and are there any plans to change current mechanics in terms of rewards and time investment. I've heard there is some talk about addressing the grind, can you offer any specifics beyond "We're looking into it"?

Hi, and thanks!
I wasn't actually part of the committee deciding on the date, so I cannot talk about its reasoning. I'm a social media/PR person more than I'm a marketing person, so I assume they have their reasons.
There'll be at least one more patch before 1.0, but it's balance and bug fixes. 1.0 will, however, come with some huge changes to the game, including the grind. I still can't talk about it, but we will relatively soon!

Congrats on getting to version 1.0!!! I don’t usually post but wanted to thank you and your team for all the hard work you’ve been doing in your studio. I started my temtem journey back in cipanku (actually went out and got a ps5 specifically to play this game) and man everything I was expecting got blown out of the water. Temtem quickly became my comfort game, the world design is phenomenal, great art style. And the community that I’ve met inside the game has been the best I’ve experienced in general, all of the top players are so humble and helpful and the folks I’ve met in my club I’ve become quite attached too.

Some constructive critiques I’ve had personally playing the game

1.) I do feel as though it can be quite a grind to get into a pvp ready state, getting 6 tems to level 100 and tv trained felt like a massive undertaking as a new player who was quite dry on pansun. (I know this is subject to change and honestly I think the addition of smoothies helped tremendously) now the grind doesn’t bother me but it was my impression as a new player nonetheless. Perhaps giving a bit more pansun to players at the end of the story will help them get access to endgame content sooner? (Also I know y’all are working on this already so I’m not super worried about this one)

2.) No spoilers but I feel like there needs to be just a tad more context plopped in earlier in the story to make the ending plot points feel more earned.

3.) better ingame system for players to trade stickers with each other, atm everyone is relying a bit of excel sheets on discord haha

That’s all I have :)

Again, amazing work so far crema you’ve made the game I wanted to play since I was a kid and I’m quite greatful for that!

Thanks for the sweet sweet words! I can’t comment on the critique just now, but the big bossman himself will soon! Stay tuned for that :)

Fun fact even if Pokemon game = bad, sales are always way better than they should be. Trying to compete against a household name is a bad move even if said game gets bad press, it will sell. So, if your indie title is trying to compete against that? Good luck trying to pull a crowd away from something they know and love even if it might not be as good

Our indie title isn’t trying to compete with anything. We’ve always said we consider each game to be its own thing, and each has its own market even if they overlap for some people. Don’t jinx it before it even comes out, jeez!

Hi friend!
Early Access players won't get extra benefits come 1.0, beyond having gotten the game for less and having been able to play it for longer. The game isn't cross-purchase, so you'll have to get it on Xbox if you wanna play it on Xbox. You will be able to use your account on Xbox through cross-progression, as long as Xbox doesn't oppose it :)

hi! not much that I can think so. Early Access has been cheaper, and grants early access, but there's no other rewards tied to it.
Some platforms have or had pre-order bonuses (the only one I think is achievable right now is PS5's), and Kickstarter Backers had a series of rewards for backing the game back then, but those are no longer obtainable.
