[2023] How can you get proficient in exotics when they never drop?

I RARELY get exotic drops yet I play every night with my husband that is shd level 2100 and I am 2400 and both of us are proficient at 11 and he gets 3 exotic drops in one mission we were doing I I haven't had one in a week or more. He can get them when he isn't even playing (ie, he hides and goes to get a drink, I shoot and kill the PVE and he gets the exotic). This happens all the time. Sure makes me want to give up on the game when it gives everything to the player that is the one not doing the work.
