You CAN use them, but they are worse than an SMG in every single facet. Including burst.
They will stagger that trash mob pulling you out of cover though.

I like the SMG also but you kinda have to aim that more than the shotgun which is easier on the fly.

I like to use all the different weapons though so I don't favor the shotgun but it has it's uses and its fun to use.

Also saves on ammo if you can use that at times for the easier stuff.

I've found double tapping melee is usually enough to override the reload without giving the phantom input that results in a melee. In the cases where I flunk it and tap too many times, a melee is pretty quick with little end lag, all things considered.

Quick question to all the shotgun users: What do you use as your other weapon and Specialization? What about your sidearm; another shotgun or pistol? What's the rest of your loadout look like?
