Like many other players, I have avoided the dark zone since starting the game. I completed the basic missions but beyond that had not gone near the place until the other day.
I have to say, the maps are brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. You are not just running around the streets. The number of buildings that are open, the changes in level that are available. They are great. If people have stayed away because of the muppets who are just out to kill players, yes they still exist and yes they are still pathetic lowlives who should catch syphallyis, but I would say, you have nothing invested in the Dark Zone at the moment, no levels of any import to lose and so on, so give it a go, just go in, have a look around, do a couple of landmarks, they are quite fun fights.
You dont have to extract any gear or make yourself a target. Honestly, the gear isnt really any better than open world anyway at the moment so just leave it and go in there for the experience. If some degenerate does kill you, go back to open world for a bit. You've lost nothing and gained a new experience.
