[2021] [Peripherals]Xbox 1 controller no longer functioning

been using xbox 1 controller for ages with zero issues. today i tried to play but the fast travel button (X) just cuts back to the player. pushing in left stick brings up the map. it's suddenly totally unplayable, whereas last night it was fine. No settings have been changed. Controller works as usual with other games, and i connected a wireless 360 pad to test, and it had the same issues.
functions fine when using keyboard, but that's not my preferred choice.
