Hey!

I am not going to pretend that there aren't hundreds of threads already talking about this. Yet I have something to add to the average "my game crash hlp" thread.
In all other threads talking about this GPU crashing the game, they all suffer from BTD (Back-To-Desktop) or Black-Screening.

However my issue presents itself like this:
[Note, this issue appears randomly and i cannot link a certain event/action to what triggers this]

1) After a random amount of time, the game freezes completely. No audio output is heard anymore, both displays are just frozen
2) After about 5 seconds of admiring the frozen screens, both screens just go completely black (nothing new so far)
Yet here is what nobody has mentioned so far:
3) After about 3 seconds of black screen, the main screen starts displaying a random, colourful noise pattern (like the ones seen on old VCR's/TV's only it's not monochromatic but very colourful) for about 5 seconds again and then finally
4) The computer crashes completely..

Now it might just be that people posting about crashing issues have just left out that "colourful noise" detail, but i am struggling to find a fix for this.

So far i have tried:
  • Installing the newest (20.9.2) GPU drivers. [Note: It's said this driver fixes a lot of crashes for 5700 cards but for me that did not fix it]
  • Turned off ALL fancy AMD Graphics options such as "Radeon Anti-Lag", "Radeon Chill", etc. from "AMD Radeon Software" AND the in-game menu
  • Switched from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 [Note: this seems to have improved stability, i am now able to play longer. But it still crashes reliably after an hour or so]
  • --(Probably unrelated)--Moved the game from my Crucial MX300 SSD sysdrive to a Samsung 840-EVO [Note: there was this issue i have spottet in the windows error logs that occurred only milliseconds before it crashed. It was an "A TCG Command has returned an error." and i have pinpointed that to my crucial SSD doing some encryption shenanigans. Moving the game to a different drive SHOULD have fixed this, but i am still crashing. However, i think i noticed crashes involving THIS error usually do not involve colourful image noise, rather it crashes straight to being frozen and then remaining there until manual powercycle]
  • Turned down the graphics settings to make it less demanding for my GPU. Thing is that i am already down to having 130FPS average with the game, therefore i think it should be enough.
  • Turned off all OverClocking (technically OC has never really been on because previously i've set GPU OC settings to "Automatic"->"Default" which should be no OC, but i've now switched to "Manual"->All options Disabled)
  • Tested GPU stability with "SuperPosition". No crashes/freezes/artifacts or any other issues there.

So far I HAVE NOT:
  • Removed/Reinstalled 20.9.2 drivers using the DDU tool [I think this might be unnecessary because i have correctly installed 20.9.2 from "Radeon Software"]
  • Installed feature update Windows 10, version 2004 [Only just now, as i am writing this i have noticed i haven't updated to v.2004. However i will do this shortly!]
  • Tried solutions you are going to tell me in this thread ;)

Brief Hardware Specifications are as follows:
Spoiler:  Show
OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit v.1903
MoBo: Asus Z170-Deluxe
CPU (No OC applied): Intel Core i7 6700K (4.00GHz)
GPU (No OC applied): Asus ROG-STRIX-RX5700XT-O8G-GAMING (driver v.: 20.9.2))
RAM (No OC applied): 2x G.SKILL Trident Z DDR4-3600 (CL15-15-15-35)
PSU: Corsair RM850 Plus (Gold), 850 Watt

Unfortunately this problem makes it absolutely impossible to play, as you may recognize yourself..
If there are any quick solutions out there, anything i've missed, help would be much appreciated :)

Until then,
thanks for anybody who read this bible..

Hey GrannyMist!

Thank you for the detailed post, and I'm sorry that you're experiencing this. Honestly, it sounds almost like a hardware issue - before I upgraded, my GTx970 would display similar images before crashing my entire PC if I was playing something a little more demanding. Have you been able to monitor the temperature of the GPU while playing the game?
