I assumed that meant that it's optional to do it. But apparently i have to do it in order to be able to spec into the skill tree. Makes no sense at all. Why am i able to unlock it if i can't even spec into the skill tree? I'm so confused.

With the Year One Pass you have instantly unlocked the Gunner Spec. You can equip it and use it without going through the stages of acquisition, but you still need to progress the Specialization like any other Spec. You can earn these Spec points through various different activities, but you need to have the Gunner equipped in order to gain Gunner points.

At any time you can choose to go through the stages of acquisition for the Gunner, but you will receive cosmetic rewards instead of the Gunner (which you already posses). I hope that helps clear things up!
