Right now the only reason I'm playing is because I actually enjoy the game. The mechanics of it work for me and make me happy. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of things wrong with the game, don't think I'm satisfied about bullet sponges cause that frankly pisses me off but that's another topic. This topic is about the gear drops.

Whoever came up with the idea that drops are weighted to almost always drop at a lower gear score than your current gear score for presumably the reason that you think that is an incentive to keep playing should be fired. Walk of shame them. I'd gladly fly to Malmo just to throw some rotting vegetables at whoever thought a gear score 500 person gets 492s regularly, regardless of content difficulty. Do you know how unsatisfying it is to spend an hour or two playing some challenging missions and walking away with zero gear worth using?

And what is with the fact that 500 items can be worse than lower GS items? Whoever thought of that has an intelligence level equal to the fine folks who wrote the final season of GoT. I thought that was supposed to be fixed? Another lie.

Like I said I'm still playing because I love the gameplay. A cover based shooter where you grind through the waves and make your way through a map is fun for me. What isn't fun is the other 99% of the game, the part that is supposed to make looter shooters....looters. There is no loot. There is just a bunch of garbage I either sell or break down after every mission because you can't figure out how to make the game rewarding.

Alright so there's a lot going on in this thread with a lot of nitty gritty details for numerous different systems. I won't be able to directly address each point with all the specifics and nuance necessary so I hope this brief overview is able to help alleviate some frustrations and confusion.

1. Gear Score 500 gear should be dropping relatively often once you have reached GS 500 and are participating in Heroic difficulty level activities. This includes heroic missions, level 4 control points, heroic bounties, etc. But you need to meet both prerequisites to see the associated drops.

2. With the change to the Recalibration system, the goal should no longer necessarily be to get a god rolled version of every piece of gear. You instead should be shooting for gear with as many keep-able attributes on it, then recalibrating from other gear into that piece to turn it into a god rolled version.

Each attribute on gear has its own Recalibration score (and corresponding limit) so you should be able to basically jury rig your ideal weapon/armor from a mixed bag of other pieces. But because each attribute has its own weight and each gear piece has a limited Recal score, the hunt becomes finding a piece off gear that starts off strong/with the most desired attributes. That way fewer things need to be broken down for Recal into it, that way it has more Recal score leftover.

I really hope this helps clear some things up, but please don't hesitate to let me know if it doesn't.
For reference, here are the TU3 patch notes as well.

Edit: There was some confusing wording in my original post. Your perfect build overall will come from a mixed bag of both equipped gear and the gear that you use to Recalibrate desired individual attributes. To be clear, any individual piece of gear can only have one attribute recalibrated, so it's important to make sure that the recalibration you're making is on the right attribute (both for its selection and for what you change to.)

Sorry for any additional confusion the mishaps in my original explanation caused.

If this is the case... may I ask what your current build/setup is? In a later comment you mention that you're going through all the heroic missions - with seemingly little issue.
Where are the areas that your build might still improve? Where is the ceiling?

I'm GS 497 and I'm in the same boat as UNRULY, which means there's OBVIOUS room for improvement to my build because 500 GS would have the higher ceiling stat pool.
I was hoping for more of an "as you play the game and presumably get new gear you will get closer to that ceiling and the room for improvement will necessarily get smaller" tone. I'm a big fan of the various threads that have tried to get players to show their best/worst build setups & gear since it lets me see where the shortcomings are rather than hearing that there are shortcomings one hundred times at once.

It is a post that can, clearly, be read in an unintentionally dismissive way. It is supposed to be a post that is searching for more uses of concrete and quantifiable examples rather than words like, "good, bad, better, worse, improvement, terrible, right, wrong, etc."

Disclaimer: There are definitely posts and comments that do give more specific examples, I'm not saying there aren't. There is also a place for more gut-level language like what is listed above, I'm not saying there isn't. I'm hoping this follow up gives a bit more context for the situation.

You can have a decent set in “no time”, one that can do most the game throws at you, which is quite good for the game. But from there you’ll have to work for it.

Youtubers and alike are throwing A LOT of hours into it, hence most of the builds they show off are way out of our reach, hence that kind of people doesn’t do the community any good.. that’s my opinion at least
Well keep in mind there are some players on here who have put hundreds (some I've seen are over a thousand) hours into the game. Even when not talking about a necessarily fully-max-roll-god-tier-gear-set, there's an important balance to strike. Loot and the gameplay loop can feel differently depending on expectations and how much one puts into the game - like so many things it can be highly subjective.
