This is not true. I don't know who spread this lie but all the stages are winable with the tech distrtibution you like. Obviously you should try to get adventage of the tech you have researched.

So these missions are fails unless I've taken a specific tech tree?

Why is there even a choice if this is the case? This wasn't clear at all, it took me 9 defeats to finally overcome this and from the difficulty shift from without using spikes to with it's clear that it's designed with barricades in mind.

Please, try to restart your Steam app, after that try to make another different Campaign save file and load it. If you can load this second Campaign file probably the first one got corrupted by a previous issue.
