s | and care that goes into making |
s | characters come to life enjoy |
s | [Music] |
s | welcome back to deconstructing I am your |
s | disembodied host Megan Everett in today |
s | adjoining me we have Tim and Elise hi |
s | waving so what are your current |
s | positions here at Digital Extremes I am |
s | a senior animator |
s | yeah and I'm Elise and I'm just an |
s | animator just yeah I'd keep asking to |
s | put some in the head of it so it sounds |
s | cooler I went with 3d animator for a |
s | while just because it's like you know |
s | like oh I'm an animator and they're like |
s | an animator what and I'm like I'm an I'm |
s | an animator |
s | that's a yep you're a space ninja enemy |
s | imagination seeking too far all right so |
s | both our animators which is super |
s | exciting because warframe is huge on the |
s | animation aspect each of you have done |
s | some really cool things with in warframe |
s | that I obviously want to touch on so |
s | people might remember Tim from his debut |
s | of the operator mocap suit video from |
s | the dev stream tell me about that |
s | process and mailing like you I know the |
s | process of how the recording works yeah |
s | how somehow I wound up being the person |
s | in this love to know how you were chosen |
s | out of everyone to be in that operator |
s | it's a very short story nobody else |
s | wanted okay yeah we have a shy shy bunch |
s | of enemies it's kind of cool that we |
s | have our own studio I know other places |
s | mocap studio yeah other places hire |
s | professional actors and we just start |
s | with Tim go go out to a big studio yeah |
s | in a lot of ways their approaches may be |
s | higher quality but the advantage we have |
s | is the quick turnaround the fact that |
s | I'm actually an animator on it means |
s | that I have certain understanding of |
s | kind of the gameplay requirements as |
s | opposed to just the acting side it's |
s | getting to be more the point now where |
s | professional mocap actors are like doing |
s | this as a living and understand the game |
s | systems but I think you're a few years |
s | back not even that far back a lot of |
s | them were just |
s | just actors doing mocap and didn't |
s | understand like oh I have to hit this |
s | idle pose or the importance of ending |
s | with a certain foot forward versus other |
s | foot forward or yeah any of those things |
s | that kind of matter that will reduce the |
s | pain for the animators later cleaning it |
s | up sorry it's really handy for us to be |
s | able to do it ourselves the thing is is |
s | if you're gonna be doing it hey you know |
s | exactly what you're looking for so you |
s | don't have to try and communicate that |
s | to someone else and be it's like a |
s | because you are gonna be animating it |
s | you know what is easy and isn't easy to |
s | fix so you know the bits that you don't |
s | have to worry about the bits that you do |
s | have to get right so I guess it's having |
s | that like extra knowledge of this is the |
s | bit I need to control make sure that |
s | comes out right and as long as I've got |
s | that I can fix the rest myself yeah so |
s | second dream onwards |
s | you've been the operator Moka yeah |
s | pretty much |
s | I mean so the second dream was I don't |
s | know if it was the first time we did |
s | mocap but it was sort of the first |
s | cinematic storytelling acting type of |
s | stuff like obviously a lot of the |
s | gameplay we can't mocap because it's |
s | impossible |
s | ninja physics in space yeah no no we |
s | don't want to see like horrible injuries |
s | that's true second dream was the first |
s | time we had that every once in a while |
s | when we have scenes with like two |
s | characters in it |
s | I've coaxed Scott to get in the suit a |
s | few times he's been tension I think in |
s | like the war within that was all him |
s | being teshon I think we can record up to |
s | four or five people at once but we never |
s | have that many people who are super |
s | interested in putting on a spandex suit |
s | and dancing around in an MD it's not as |
s | bad as it it depends I mean it depends |
s | who's in the room watching what is if |
s | it's just me and the tech animator and |
s | Jeff it's not so bad he's handy for if |
s | you need like a sturdy prop |
s | yeah or somebody to shove you around |
s | like a jerk he seems really eager like |
s | throw the animators on the ground I |
s | don't know no but |
s | are we talking about having emo cups |
s | anything other than operator who's have |
s | been adding the other mode captain |
s | yeah the the worm Queen you were the |
s | worm Queen yeah I was all I was like |
s | three characters in the same scene at |
s | once so obviously I had to take turns |
s | recording and pretending that my other |
s | character was sitting beside me or |
s | whatever yeah yeah it was really fun |
s | actually I like being there look the |
s | little one the nice thing about mocap |
s | acting is you don't have to really be |
s | good at it because you got as many takes |
s | as you want and you know someone's gonna |
s | fix it later okay so you're gonna pass |
s | the time it's my own worry about nailing |
s | it every time or even getting one whole |
s | tape because you could splice them |
s | together after you know we just like |
s | acting through a puppet that we gets |
s | control and the idea of doing that but |
s | we actually get to move physically and |
s | get something that we need is is it's |
s | not actually that big of a leap from |
s | once the other I don't think so it kind |
s | of makes sense for enemy it's my opinion |
s | so is there anything you can tease about |
s | no caps coming up I don't know what I |
s | can say but I mean I I'm mo capping a |
s | new movement set person that you can |
s | control with your controller hmm I don't |
s | know what we had to what extent I can |
s | say how much of a character it is I |
s | don't know that's good that's good I |
s | know what it is Elyse well both of you |
s | had a hand in animating Fortuna at least |
s | I know you had more of a hand in Fortuna |
s | oh right yeah that was the last minute |
s | like addition I remember watching coke |
s | coke are dishonest yeah so I was |
s | watching his stream when the Fortuner |
s | stuff went out I was like see my little |
s | lady guys see my little boy and he just |
s | like went straight past him I was like |
s | yeah that was it more of a like I have |
s | time I'm just gonna throw a little wave |
s | in there I mean there's another time the |
s | cool thing about this is is we kind of |
s | get a lot of crazy freedom of we kind of |
s | get like an area that we get to look out |
s | or a character we get to look at you |
s | know it's it's we always try and give |
s | people bits they they can kind of go see |
s | so you know one of my things was to just |
s | make all the NPC's look as cool as |
s | possible in the time frame that we had a |
s | job yeah obviously with other people's |
s | health it wasn't set up for it yet and |
s | they they wanted all the animation yeah |
s | they didn't know how they were gonna |
s | actually play out yes so Elise was just |
s | like I'll just make up everything what |
s | they hook up or quite sure of it yeah so |
s | it was just kind of like an idea I had |
s | and I threw it in quickly just like |
s | really roughly blocked out I was like oh |
s | yeah that's kind of fun so then did it |
s | properly in this character was like hey |
s | they're standing right in front of you |
s | when you arrive and it just seemed |
s | really I mean the rest of us were just |
s | like oh yeah that characters every we |
s | were kind of used to it but at least was |
s | like why doesn't even acknowledge you |
s | like you should like say hi or something |
s | and so she just did it and then everyone |
s | was like that's the most amazing thing |
s | ever I feel like they recognized me and |
s | I think you know we were always |
s | jam-packed with our schedules but if we |
s | can just give you know a couple people |
s | this extra thing that's cool that that |
s | makes them like like oh I didn't know |
s | they would do that like the whole like |
s | MOA |
s | ducking when you dark like oh yeah that |
s | was a happy accident |
s | yeah I love actually that was really |
s | funny because I was like working on all |
s | the new more animations someone was like |
s | oh my god like everyone's going crazy |
s | about you all mower animations on stream |
s | and I was like what am i I said I heard |
s | from the stream and they're doing the |
s | ducking thing and I was like oh that's |
s | not my one in like forever ago and it |
s | just was the thing that the code was |
s | hooked up in certain way that it |
s | triggered and does like oh well I'll |
s | just take credit for that I guess yeah |
s | was a lot of fun so what is there any |
s | other kind of animations for the Fortuna |
s | NPCs that didn't make it in that were |
s | kind of just like quirky random thought |
s | ones there's characters around that are |
s | like wrenching on stuff and when I |
s | started those animations I was like well |
s | what are they wrenching on they're like |
s | I don't know we haven't built the set |
s | yet just do a bunch of different angles |
s | and we'll make it match and then after I |
s | did them all they were like yeah it |
s | doesn't really fit anywhere so there's |
s | like there's like a handful of people |
s | are wrenching here and there but I made |
s | all these versions of like wrenching |
s | clockwise wrenching like overhead or |
s | down below like kneeling over a Ledge or |
s | something and no no they only used like |
s | two of them or three of them I remember |
s | we were we were playing about in the |
s | because I when I was the anything I've |
s | my cap now is some of the the NPC stuff |
s | like a boss yeah like yeah looks like a |
s | supervisor kind of character which he |
s | wasn't but I thought that's what he was |
s | so I did all these like aggressive like |
s | get faster your job you're doing crap |
s | kind of animations and and then later |
s | you're like oh we didn't really think of |
s | him like that and then so I did all |
s | those those that mock up stuff and |
s | absolutely quick put it in him and it |
s | was like oh I don't know if that's kind |
s | of the way we wanted to go because it's |
s | it's not that he's of the supervisors |
s | that you know it's like higher up than |
s | that and then we put it in it was like |
s | oh no this is kind of cool it's like |
s | they're all stressed out yeah so that |
s | was like a happy accident that we're |
s | like Bob Ross it worked out man yeah all |
s | day every day so even though you did a |
s | lot of wrenching stuff that didn't go |
s | into the game how long did it take you |
s | to do those and then afraid not to go in |
s | was it like a day to do those well so |
s | there was there was a character that was |
s | supposed to be like wrenching and then |
s | he would stop and like pick up his |
s | wrench and shift it onto his shoulder |
s | there was all this like switching grips |
s | his left hand right hand they threw it |
s | all out because he couldn't be wrenching |
s | so they ended up using him for the |
s | bounty who's outside so that you didn't |
s | have to go all the way back into Fortuna |
s | to get quests but they're like there's |
s | nothing for him to wrench on so he can't |
s | be wrenching |
s | and then turn around and talk to you so |
s | you threw all that out and I spent |
s | forever getting all those hand grips to |
s | work but I did like learn how to do it |
s | better so then when I redid it he's kind |
s | of just standing there waiting for you |
s | he's not wrenching or anything but he |
s | does still do a little bit of |
s | manipulation of his big wrench tool |
s | thing and it was a lot easier the second |
s | time didn't take nearly as long nice a |
s | crow here's an owl I'm an expert it has |
s | hammers and wrench |
s | so other than Elise other than the |
s | waving guy at the beginning of the |
s | fortune if you haven't seen him go wave |
s | to him what else have you give him some |
s | love give him some love can't high five |
s | he just wants a friend I'd love to do |
s | the high five but maybe one day slip |
s | so what other characters in Fortuna have |
s | you so I think I did most of the |
s | literally the NPC's so most of the like |
s | non play |
s | non non voiced characters so most of the |
s | guys that want the French guys which |
s | given it like that you see like standing |
s | around or like a lot of it was like |
s | doing different post changes different |
s | idols and we we had like one guy that |
s | was at times fifty like all over the |
s | thing and it's like oh it's just the |
s | same thing over and over again so I |
s | tried to like break it up and do new |
s | stuff I think it's it's always cool to |
s | try and explain it's people who don't |
s | animate Oh kids I feel like you know |
s | when you see like a concept arc like Oh |
s | someone's like digitally painted that I |
s | kind of get that or when you see a |
s | character model it's like oh I get that |
s | like they've had to go in and add the |
s | pause and they've had to you know |
s | construct the mesh and you show some of |
s | the animation and then they're like cool |
s | he's waving or he's bowing or he's |
s | walking like it looks correct |
s | like what well so you made that |
s | character none of the weight or the |
s | movement or the timing or any of that |
s | like exists outside of what we create |
s | you know except for mocap where we get a |
s | base but even the base like we have to |
s | do a lot to make it look cool and you |
s | know to understand like what it is we do |
s | all day we have to create something that |
s | tricks you into believing that it's a |
s | real character with a real personality |
s | that has movement |
s | and that lives and breathes in that |
s | world and then if you make any new |
s | animations for that character you you |
s | stuff to make sure it has the same |
s | personality and you know every single |
s | person's gonna walk slightly differently |
s | and move slightly differently and that's |
s | the bit that that takes a little time is |
s | like figuring out who that person is |
s | what they move like and how do we make |
s | that different from every other thing in |
s | the game yeah I like to think that like |
s | sometimes when there's bugs in warframe |
s | which never happens and like a character |
s | with like tipos oh yeah I think that |
s | like right that's like the dead version |
s | and the animators make it the live |
s | version put the life into or it's not |
s | tipos and static you're trying to say it |
s | like a it's a it's a puppet yeah it's |
s | just just like a puppet you're used to |
s | in real life but it's in the computer |
s | instead yeah yeah no it's great we you |
s | know we we breathe life into the |
s | characters you know I think the my |
s | favorite moments are always when like |
s | I'm talking correct directly with the |
s | character artists it's like making this |
s | thing and it's gone through like |
s | someone's designed it and then someone's |
s | made it and then we just get like oh |
s | this is like a description of that |
s | personality or what our idea for this is |
s | and then we just first start doing the |
s | animations and then the character ought |
s | to see something like wow this looks so |
s | cool it's moving wow you know that's |
s | always a very nice moment mm-hmm it's |
s | been fun it's a great team great I mean |
s | like people here really care a lot and |
s | it just mean except for Jeff you just |
s | all right thanks other than the |
s | wrenchers anyone else that you worked on |
s | in Fortuna did the mocap for a lot of |
s | the NPCs and the store vendors I guess |
s | we called them but I did take her so |
s | she's the one that I did the mocap and |
s | yet yeah so I actually I want to see |
s | that please look at me when it first |
s | came up my very first reaction was |
s | awesome there's gonna be a cool way I |
s | want to see this character in the game |
s | on the voice actor just oh kill is so |
s | good yeah but you know the you know we |
s | get to like step into people's shoes as |
s | animators it but I think everyone |
s | responded |
s | so well because it's such a lovely |
s | character which I mean that's mostly I |
s | think of credit to the writing yeah I |
s | think the writing was really good and |
s | the voice acting and the mocap and |
s | yourselves there it's just there to make |
s | it yeah you guys put the you get the |
s | story you see what he looks like and |
s | then you have to make that work it's |
s | actually I didn't I didn't even know for |
s | sure what ticker was gonna look like you |
s | just have that when I when I did them |
s | all because it was yeah so we'll get the |
s | rig and we'll just it will sometimes |
s | we'll get like a like a white kind of |
s | block out version where it's we get like |
s | roughly but we might not get any |
s | textures we might not get the final |
s | thing and we have to just kind of use |
s | our imagination I was with for two new |
s | characters it might be like oh and |
s | surprise they don't have a foot yeah |
s | we'll have someone like trying to be |
s | helpful me like I've put like these |
s | animations into this person it looks |
s | great and you look and it's like ah ha |
s | that's like a whole difference mmm Oh |
s | reduce we do without a leg yeah so other |
s | than NPCs and wrenchers there were other |
s | animations like children's art gun and |
s | wisp that was shown on deaf stream 123 |
s | Tim you made the comment about Steve's |
s | below the belts Steve made the comment I |
s | just noted that he said it yeah so did |
s | you do so I'd say that's a collaboration |
s | because Scott did the animation of the |
s | character catching the gun from the sky |
s | that's reused for all the different and |
s | we're not talking about also right right |
s | Scott Johnston and so he did that and |
s | then I did just the weapon itself he did |
s | the first arc wing guns that we already |
s | had yes but now as we add new ones the |
s | new guns need their own animation so |
s | really it was just I just made the |
s | barrel spin a little bit and like gets |
s | ready but the combination that you |
s | looked cool together do you seem to like |
s | it so |
s | well did you like use any existing |
s | inspiration for like the rotating or was |
s | it all man |
s | well it's not the design yes no it's |
s | probably design that they sew in when |
s | it's in firing mode when you're when |
s | you're shooting with it you have a sort |
s | of on unlocked on kind of free roaming |
s | shooting mode where it's kind of lazy |
s | and the spinning and the beam is kind of |
s | wide and spread all over the place |
s | random and then when it locks onto an |
s | enemy it tightens down into it into a |
s | tiny beam and it's like spins up faster |
s | and I think they described it as kind of |
s | like a ghostbusters beam yeah it was |
s | basically that it was just if it's |
s | always gonna be spinning when you're |
s | firing then I figured when you equip it |
s | it kind of prepares itself by winding up |
s | so it just winds up the opposite |
s | direction when you shoot it goes |
s | clockwise yeah so what all things I just |
s | look for whatever parts on the gun move |
s | and I move doesn't look like it's just |
s | instant other than hail Jeremy showed |
s | wisp and personally I'm obsessed with we |
s | barely shown anything up her but I'm |
s | obsessed so where did that come from at |
s | least I'm so lucky to begin to work on |
s | her because I really loved working on |
s | well I have worked on floating women in |
s | the past funnily enough you're rolling |
s | your eyes no one can see which is wrong |
s | it was great fun but like I didn't I was |
s | early in in the days and how good of a |
s | job I did but like I don't know I love |
s | working on like fluid movement that |
s | always fascinates me so I really want to |
s | do something very different with way |
s | sorry wanted her personality to be like |
s | so a lot of the war frames we have aa |
s | very like this is me I'm warframe I'm |
s | super cool about us and this is who I am |
s | and I kind of wanted was to be more like |
s | shy like not shy but like like cool I |
s | think of her like smoke yes so I you |
s | know like I said with the fire thing I |
s | was like I want her to feel like smoke |
s | which doesn't make any sense anyone else |
s | but me but you know I wanted it to feel |
s | like rolling smoke so |
s | she's supposed to be like lights and |
s | ethereal and I tried to do something |
s | different from the kind of breathing |
s | floating she's very first time what we |
s | can do with her because she is you know |
s | off the ground and we can kind of make |
s | it really different I'm super super |
s | lucky that I got her to work on because |
s | she's gonna be real cool so anyone would |
s | have done a great job because she's just |
s | such an awesome design but yeah I'm |
s | hoping that people dig this kind of |
s | different it is very different different |
s | run what with her so confident I don't |
s | want it to be too like sexy either she's |
s | got like this sort of thank you that's |
s | how I like she's got this little sine |
s | wave going through but her head is like |
s | yeah eating it like a snake like just |
s | waiting for her I just had to attack |
s | like elusive yeah like it's not like it |
s | was really interesting reading through |
s | what people's reactions wire on the like |
s | that I think frame Twitter thing went |
s | through and just had a look at the |
s | comments just to see if anyone there's |
s | like any parts that didn't strike cool |
s | everyone seemed very positive and also |
s | picked up a couple ideas from some |
s | people so we'll see yeah I hope people |
s | like it and fingers crossed to get time |
s | to do it my crunch time but we have no |
s | time there is no time Jeff said on the |
s | page she was gonna happen |
s | I forgot what he said would be unique |
s | was it dodges or definitely getting a |
s | custom spring I just you want to do a |
s | whole movement set I get suit yeah so |
s | the actual movement tree is massive so I |
s | have no idea if I live actually be able |
s | to do it cuz I'm pretty new here so you |
s | know I don't actually know I'm getting |
s | into but it would be really cool to do |
s | like at least a kind of walk walk run |
s | sprint |
s | I got some ideas we'll see how it goes |
s | but uh yeah that was like a two minutes |
s | before stream slack message I ping to |
s | Jeff like man shakes really stupid and |
s | her like deep |
s | things like she's like standing and she |
s | has no feet and she's running and my |
s | girl over the place and it doesn't look |
s | right and I was like oh very cool if I |
s | could get to do a movement set haha no |
s | time loll and then he was like well |
s | she's looking into it I am oh okay cool |
s | thanks Jeff write that down something to |
s | do but you know we've got a lot going on |
s | so no promises |
s | speaking of Jeff he's not here to defend |
s | himself how does the hydroid Prime and |
s | Zephyr prime trailer done okay yeah like |
s | the as far as I know the animation is |
s | done yeah but you're saying that any |
s | engineer needs ballast I'm still yeah |
s | I'm not entirely sure I probably can't |
s | answer the why it's not from what I |
s | understood it was something along the |
s | lines of because of lower story reasons |
s | ballast who traditionally narrated all |
s | of these would need to be either |
s | rewritten or changed to somebody else or |
s | what and so it's and then like you'd |
s | have to bring voice actors back in or |
s | whatever and I don't know if they just |
s | can't decide on what they want to do |
s | with it or if they've decided they're |
s | not going to do it or I don't know it's |
s | not our hands I don't think it was |
s | Zephyr prime the animations done but I |
s | don't think like effects or anything cuz |
s | it was already that finished animation |
s | right around the time when we were like |
s | oh I guess we're not sure what's |
s | happening with these so I think they |
s | kind of just stopped right after |
s | animation so it didn't get through to |
s | like lighting effects audio I had a |
s | friend of mine Gym Leader Jim Leedom who |
s | yeah Jim good Oh Jim he did a talk in |
s | Toronto a couple months back and he had |
s | this like quote he said and I just |
s | thought it was the best thing ever |
s | because I kept trying to explain to |
s | people like what it was like working in |
s | addition to extremes versus other game |
s | companies and I kept saying it's like |
s | it's like a big game jam like it's not |
s | like it's not like normal it's like this |
s | big |
s | everyone's like he was like he said at |
s | the talk he said like oh I kind of like |
s | sound people that working it that de is |
s | kind of like working in the Wild West |
s | mmm and I'm like that is so true you |
s | know like everything's changing all the |
s | time and it's also like you know |
s | everyone just wants to do what's best to |
s | the players but that that means that |
s | it's everything's kind of you got a you |
s | got to just kind of roll |
s | with going on at the minute but that's |
s | really cool because you know a lot of |
s | companies will have stuff set in stone |
s | for like the next four or five years and |
s | that is cool but then it means that you |
s | you can't kind of just fly in and be |
s | creative and suggest changes all the |
s | time that doesn't always happen because |
s | usually there's a very set you know step |
s | step process this you know load people |
s | have worked out but you know it's not |
s | like that here you know I you know I |
s | think I made a suggestion at one point |
s | like Oh wouldn't it be cool if we did |
s | this thing and two days later is in the |
s | game it's like that's that's craziness |
s | like no I can just be like I made this |
s | thing and it was like cool it's cool |
s | yeah it's in and it's like oh that's wow |
s | that's that's amazing that we get to |
s | work like that like this might blow up |
s | in our faces but we won't know and it's |
s | super fun because it's when you know |
s | that is kind of the core of what makes |
s | de unique is rebels the frequent ability |
s | to update like all the time yeah there's |
s | no outside publisher like we're |
s | self-publishing so that we have to kind |
s | of make our own decisions like no limit |
s | we're like if we can do it let's try it |
s | yeah I mean it's not it's not completely |
s | unstructured and completely just throw |
s | whatever yes Matt it's filtered through |
s | some very smart brains like Steve is |
s | open to any suggestion but it has to be |
s | a well-thought-out suggestion that you |
s | can back up with with like if it's just |
s | like what if he's like how much have you |
s | thought about this it's like okay think |
s | about it some more and then come back |
s | he's open to it but he doesn't want you |
s | just like spit ideas do what an animate |
s | kawaii well he did say good ideas I did |
s | say good I said well - 3 123 we also |
s | debut the guest city vacuum cleaner |
s | Roomba things and a lot of people want |
s | kabobs to be able to ride the little |
s | Roomba can we make that happen |
s | anything is possible from whether or not |
s | she just said no yeah |
s | but anything you do comes at the expense |
s | of doing something else so what are the |
s | priorities |
s | great community feedback happy players |
s | cat memes riding on rumors maybe he's |
s | speaking a cat I was the one that put |
s | the shiver animations into Venus |
s | you're welcome making a girl feel bad |
s | because that parents a shivering |
s | ultimate goal of an animators to make |
s | people feel I was writing that patch no |
s | no Mike how do I make this sound happy |
s | like your pets will now act really cold |
s | I don't know why is he bowing yeah so |
s | next we have to have like knit sweaters |
s | that you can put on them I mean that's |
s | why business little booties already |
s | makes stuffed animals you can make |
s | sweaters we're going down a great train |
s | speaking about the road companions |
s | though oh yeah we are doing a contest |
s | soon oh yeah yeah was your idea yeah see |
s | this is what I mean by the time I hit |
s | the x axis okay wouldn't it be cool if |
s | like the community could suggest an |
s | animation for us to do for the Mo's |
s | because yeah there was so much fun to |
s | work on because it's just so much |
s | personality in them so again to do a |
s | bunch of those things just really fun so |
s | that that contest should be just after |
s | this podcast goes lives so if you're |
s | interested stay tuned anything that we |
s | didn't touch on that you guys want to |
s | talk about stuff you have to work really |
s | hard to get to a point where you can't |
s | get paid to do this stuff because it |
s | takes a lot of skill but you know that |
s | doesn't mean anyone couldn't do it like |
s | if this is something that you |
s | desperately want to do if you're willing |
s | to put the hours in to get the skill for |
s | it cuz that's what we did you know we |
s | you know I'm just born and then you're |
s | an amazing animator like no way well I |
s | mean the way I started out was I was |
s | like 10 years old then I was on the |
s | playground pretending to be Ninja |
s | Turtles and Power Rangers and back then |
s | that was called being a loser but now |
s | I'm doing the exact same thing I get |
s | paid for I know it's like oh cool you |
s | make games were literally in PowerPoint |
s | yeah yeah it's it's cool |
s | but like anything you know you love to |
s | do anything you just you have to be |
s | willing to put there but a lot of hours |
s | in that you know if anyone you know was |
s | interested in any more anything there's |
s | there's a ton of free stuff online I |
s | have free tutorials you can just like |
s | Google 3d animation tutorials and |
s | there's a ton of free stuff from Gumroad |
s | YouTube videos I would recommend the |
s | anima state discord yeah there's a whole |
s | bunch of people in there you can ask |
s | direct questions to the animates was the |
s | next one I was gonna say it is smaller |
s | but it is also I think like a more like |
s | a little bit more of a focus group |
s | because the annum state group is huge |
s | Jonathan Cooper's new book just came out |
s | game annum |
s | he runs game Adam calm yeah and he's |
s | been posting amazing articles about game |
s | animation both from like the animation |
s | side and the gameplay like |
s | implementation side of things for years |
s | and I followed some of his tutorials to |
s | improve and so getting a whole book of |
s | that I think is totally worth it and |
s | then yeah and then if you wanted to |
s | spend some money but you didn't want to |
s | go to university there's a ton of great |
s | animation courses online now which one |
s | outside of the schools no I mean like |
s | Adams school yeah I am my anime |
s | animation mentor thank you odd those are |
s | probably the best ones more expensive |
s | than others so but they will give you a |
s | good grounding for animation but again |
s | even that is like just doing that as no |
s | guarantee you're actually gonna get |
s | anywhere it's a 100% about the work you |
s | you're gonna put it I would say that if |
s | you're on Twitter the animation |
s | community on Twitter friendly like you |
s | can you can directly ask like yeah |
s | senior that's legal level animators |
s | direct questions and they're happy to |
s | talk yeah directly asking if anyone |
s | wants to find you on Twitter and |
s | directly ask you anything about |
s | animation where can they find you |
s | yeah it's literally my name so it's at |
s | least going up so it's e ly s e-g ym er |
s | which I am equally creative and really |
s | good yeah I mean you guys could just |
s | leave I'll just keep talking about it |
s | like we could be here all day I think |
s | people yes doing the game because you |
s | make our jobs possible and we hope you |
s | will we like giving you guys something |
s | you know something enjoyable to come |
s | home to at the end of the day cuz cuz we |
s | know what really hard to try and give |
s | you guys something cool there's a whole |
s | Department of animators that you don't |
s | get to see because there's only like |
s | Jeff is kind of our representative on |
s | streams and I guess this is the first |
s | time I've been on podcast so not a lot |
s | of them want to talk like Elyse was |
s | saying with mocap I always animators are |
s | kind of shy they don't always want to be |
s | in front of camera these are all really |
s | really good animators like I you have a |
s | very very senior team I think I'm just |
s | gonna list them off Juke jae-sung Lee's |
s | Scott myself Tim Darryl Regina |
s | Ian and our tech animators that make |
s | everything possible Chris Eric and Jack |
s | yeah everything everybody does stellar |
s | work I don't get seen anywhere no they |
s | make us they make everything possible |
s | you yeah it's it's one of those like |
s | hidden things right there they're always |
s | really humble very quiet and that you |
s | know without them we we couldn't work so |
s | they they make everything great and |
s | great team good team go team yeah I |
s | remember there was like a point where |
s | I've been walking here and I kept |
s | getting on all the the animation the |
s | animals stuff I kept making them already |
s | cute I'm just gonna be known as the |
s | anime that only works on cute things |
s | like she can only do like cute adorable |
s | animations and I just wanted to feel |
s | feel Rhiannon everyone's like oh you you |
s | made me feel bad for my pet don't go and |
s | I'm like oh no but Jeff's cool you can |
s | ask him for whatever you want and he'll |
s | he'll work it in after seven comes |
s | around you get to work I drew primarily |
s | that's done there's nothing to work on |
s | animators I can show you later nobody |
s | else can see evidence roll everybody |
s | Hailee's when i watch the hydroid |
s | project I'll show it to you right after |
s | this yeah I can show you the balcony |
s | this effort one two so thank you to both |
s | Elise and Tim for chatting with me and |
s | get back to the hydro Prime trailer well |
s | thank you thank you again too timid |
s | Elise for being on the show and thank |
s | you for listening we'll see you next |
s | month for another episode of |
s | deconstructing |
s | [Music] |
