s | artist formerly known as George Spano |
s | I'm George Spanos and I'm the audio |
s | director at De you know making warframe |
s | happen for a long time George a long |
s | time I guess well I was talking about |
s | that with somebody six seven years now I |
s | guess we 2012 right yes oh yeah so a |
s | long time |
s | fun stuff next up our first guest at a |
s | 10 o con sound panel this is Cheryl |
s | Mubeen method that's all good I heard |
s | your podcast when you print out |
s | corrected someone else when you were |
s | doing it with the Australian guys I was |
s | like I won't forget that and I forgot it |
s | yeah it's all good that's literally how |
s | everyone handles it we always get it |
s | wrong and then we move on it's all good |
s | and we are so honored to have you here |
s | you've entered the warframe universe |
s | with a very intriguing character Nora |
s | night yes hey there dreamers |
s | how y'all doing and last but not least |
s | no stranger no stranger to the warframe |
s | voice-acting library and also no |
s | stranger to the warframe community he's |
s | an awesome and engaging part of what |
s | makes warframe so great Lucas Schumann |
s | hi guys Wow |
s | numero 310 Oh con for me this is amazing |
s | you guys keep bringing me back what's |
s | wrong with you I have no idea why what |
s | have I done |
s | yes I am along with several of the |
s | characters that I voice one of the |
s | ghouls on the plains beat lon |
s | named Rick to school one of the buzzsaw |
s | that sounds like he's from Mad Max |
s | that's me |
s | also a very certain grenier scientist |
s | named Tilburg or and yes I'm very |
s | excited now as well and also an |
s | individual by the name of Nathaniel the |
s | most punchable corpus out there I was by |
s | the way actually |
s | [Music] |
s | oh no now |
s | [Applause] |
s | welcome to 10 okay Wow we murder people |
s | here like that is like you said you were |
s | gonna do something and that's like oh |
s | he's probably gonna do a line no no no |
s | no Lucas always goes off-script and it's |
s | good I love it |
s | it's beautiful it's only half a cosplay |
s | don't worry what is it made of nobody |
s | wants to touch it by the way you got to |
s | get him on the art panel to next year I |
s | can hear more in the back on tomorrow |
s | we've already done our intro in the most |
s | theatrical and beautiful way possible |
s | we're gonna do some questions we're |
s | gonna play some games and then we're |
s | gonna do an audience Q&A at the end I'll |
s | call you guys up at that time you're |
s | gonna line up in the middle but the time |
s | is not now first we must start with a |
s | serious part there's a lot of people |
s | here who are aspiring voice actors |
s | aspiring sound designers that might just |
s | be interested in literally how did you |
s | get started in the industry so we'll |
s | start with George then we'll go Cheryl |
s | then we'll go Lucas so yeah so I got |
s | started I went to school I always knew |
s | that I wanted to work in sound I went to |
s | college then I worked in post-production |
s | doing television and radio commercials |
s | and some short films and some TV series |
s | and then decided I wanted to do |
s | something even crazier and get into game |
s | development and then pursued that and to |
s | do the sound design thing now for 1314 |
s | years and in video games @de yeah so oh |
s | it's wonderful |
s | all the love so I got started in voice |
s | acting after getting some training and |
s | voice acting and I decided to do this |
s | because my husband was like you talks so |
s | so very much let's make some money off |
s | of this literally this is why |
s | so yeah my starting industry was |
s | audiobooks I'm an author also so and |
s | then I moved over into doing more |
s | auditioning in other genres so audio |
s | books are amazing all the time do you |
s | find it easier this is just a total sub |
s | question yeah your to do a consistent |
s | reading of an audiobook or characters |
s | what do you okay audiobooks is really |
s | challenging because there are characters |
s | within them because you do like fiction |
s | and then you have to end up doing like |
s | 40 characters 40 characters so I find |
s | that really challenging but one of the |
s | things that's really just a long haul |
s | with audiobooks it's doing the editing a |
s | lot of us who are not big-time people we |
s | have to do our own editing okay so |
s | that's just a slog fun part is reading |
s | it's really fun and it's a lot faster |
s | than the editing I got my start in first |
s | of all in radio and then kind of blended |
s | a little bit of just theater that I'd |
s | always just loved from like school and |
s | it's community theater and I was just |
s | like in I think was like 2007 I was like |
s | hey people get paid to make voices for |
s | things yeah they do I should look into |
s | that and it was about two and a half |
s | years of about looking into it and then |
s | I was like talking to people that person |
s | talked another person that person talked |
s | to another person that person had a |
s | workshop that workshop had a person |
s | there who was starting a Facebook group |
s | that Facebook group had a thing it just |
s | led one thing into another and all of a |
s | sudden I'm just like hey you wanna |
s | audition for Cooking Mama it's like what |
s | what yeah how does that work how does |
s | that work yeah sure and so I just |
s | happened to find myself doing things and |
s | now here we are almost 10 years later |
s | you know I think like I think I've got a |
s | hundred and fifty video games under my |
s | potpourri |
s | now and I'm just like yeah well it's |
s | under my fanny pack but still its |
s | regardless it's no it'sit's it's so much |
s | it's so much fun I wouldn't I wouldn't |
s | rather be doing I would rather be doing |
s | nothing else than this this is so much |
s | fun |
s | one of the best things you got dudes got |
s | enjoy the stuff it's not gonna matter at |
s | all and so yeah that's how I got started |
s | it was basically just like a blend of |
s | everything and I just like hey |
s | realization that that there can be money |
s | in this I should look for a job I love |
s | it that's awesome I just want to say for |
s | anyone watching in chat this is a |
s | charity event and you do have the option |
s | to live donate to the Canadian Mental |
s | Health Association so feel free to bring |
s | some donations our way during the panel |
s | maybe we'll set the donation record for |
s | this sound panel let's do it let's do it |
s | so don't forget to donate to CMHA give |
s | your donations to the void everyone wait |
s | we have a corpus on stage and we just |
s | asked for money this is gonna I just |
s | want her in the pen donate to the void |
s | and just fade out I would do totally |
s | totally |
s | our next question is about warframe and |
s | maybe what surprised you most about |
s | warframe whether either playing reading |
s | about it reading that first audition |
s | maybe George what surprises you six |
s | years in seven years what's the prize |
s | everything surprises actually I I |
s | shouldn't be surprised by anything but |
s | I'm always surprised all the time |
s | I'm surprised that how the team comes |
s | together and I mean the whole dev team |
s | to make it what it is you know if you |
s | guys could see the insanity that goes |
s | into every update there are times where |
s | I'm like this is houses gonna work it's |
s | never gonna work and it always works so |
s | that's the thing that I'm always |
s | inspired and surprised by all the time |
s | his sound team is in the front row |
s | nodding like yes yeah and the sound |
s | sound team represent yeah we got Willem |
s | Eric David Karl Mark is around somewhere |
s | Jeff is around somewhere a bunch of |
s | great great people probably mixing the |
s | stream being like it's mono it's mono |
s | yeah yeah Jeff Jeff Jeff is our our |
s | stream master worrying about the audio |
s | so and Cheryl what has surprised you |
s | most about warframe well what surprised |
s | me most was the depth of story |
s | characters were so richly drawn it's not |
s | that I had a big preconception that it |
s | was going to be one way or the other but |
s | it was just so real |
s | just so deep I thought this is is this |
s | normal I don't do a lot of videogame |
s | work like Lucas I don't know if this is |
s | normal |
s | it seems surprising you have a PhD stop |
s | now true it's true I do but I'm a |
s | scientist but she's got the PhD what the |
s | heck's up with this what's going on I |
s | love it |
s | you're a fake scientist Lucas we how did |
s | you yes and for you Lucas what is |
s | surprised you most you've had a long |
s | relationship with the game now so yeah I |
s | mean it's over three years now that I've |
s | been bringing Neff until in and it's I |
s | think the the biggest thing that |
s | surprised me was was till actually and I |
s | think the reason was it only followed |
s | bike and I think we've talked about this |
s | a lot before George is that you know |
s | it's like three weeks after I got taken |
s | in for for Nath they were like there was |
s | an audition I was like try this one out |
s | too and I end up being warframe again |
s | didn't know that it was Dillard or and |
s | once we finished working on that for the |
s | tube maneuver Gore event when that thing |
s | went live the the response from the |
s | community was not only incredible but |
s | damn near unanimous and I and I remember |
s | there was a member of the sound team |
s | that was like literally wrote me they're |
s | like this has never happened before |
s | they've never all agreed on one thing |
s | but it's a mate and so having everybody |
s | kind of come together on that not about |
s | what I've done but then also over the |
s | course of what over the years of me |
s | working on this just to see the |
s | community and I'm not trying to get all |
s | hokey and Disney on you guys but I mean |
s | really it's just you guys are so can |
s | awesome you really are the dedication |
s | the dedication that you guys put into |
s | all of this the dedication that you put |
s | into your fashion frames the dedication |
s | you put into your dojos the dedication |
s | you put into oh I don't know a no con is |
s | amazing and that continues to amaze me |
s | every single year it's great it's |
s | incredible I see people coming and |
s | saying hey I flew here from Iceland |
s | and I'm like you it's it's incredible |
s | and it's like because you know we work |
s | on this game 365 days a year and this is |
s | the one day that we get to come here and |
s | see all the amazing people well not all |
s | of them but a big portion of them that |
s | who support us and it's amazing to see |
s | that how many people came from another |
s | country not Canada hands up like well |
s | yeah insane that's fantastic I love that |
s | that was like I was watching on stream |
s | there were a lot of hands that just |
s | raised where are the 90 percent you |
s | could complete the body if you just took |
s | some of those you could have arms and |
s | legs don't tempt me okay our next |
s | question is what do you look forward to |
s | most about warfarin and its characters |
s | so George has a different approach on |
s | this I think than perhaps our voice |
s | actors but I'd love to hear all your |
s | answers yeah I mean I you know like |
s | Lucas said I always look forward to what |
s | is the next character gonna be and where |
s | can we take it you know like is it what |
s | kind of weird crazy thing are the |
s | Raiders gonna dream up that we have to |
s | put sound to and that's probably the |
s | thing for me anyway that keeps keeps it |
s | going and is one of the most fundamental |
s | and exciting parts because it keeps it |
s | interesting you know so I look I look |
s | forward to just the the difference and |
s | the craziness of each character and also |
s | like you alluded to Lucas we never know |
s | what it's gonna end up being you know |
s | cuz a lot of times we'll write a |
s | character and we're like well we wanted |
s | to have this kind of an intonation and |
s | it's kind of a flavor and then an actor |
s | will do something really crazy and |
s | interesting in the audition and we're |
s | like oh man like let's shift gears let's |
s | let's do that let's write for that so |
s | that's always the thing that I look |
s | forward to with with characters and in |
s | the game so what I look forward to is |
s | just learning the community more and |
s | learning this game more I'm not a gamer |
s | so yeah I mean this is a lot as far as |
s | characters I mean just seeing people's |
s | responses to be able to share here and |
s | other places online especially is pretty |
s | overwhelming and wonderful I look |
s | forward to dipping into that whenever |
s | y'all let me and whenever people reach |
s | out sort of look forward to the |
s | community around it I don't know if that |
s | answers the question buddy |
s | thank you for words Neff and your boss |
s | fight and I've said that I said that |
s | before and I've also said one about say |
s | before but I think it answers this |
s | question really well it's one of the |
s | things that I'd love to see Nathanael |
s | lose it because the Tenno pushed him so |
s | far and conman facade goes completely |
s | away our free I'm sorry preacher facade |
s | goes completely away and it's just all |
s | comment and it's just like you know what |
s | no screw the void anymore it's you and |
s | me we're doing this thing now I want to |
s | see that happen because I have no idea |
s | where the writers will take it I have no |
s | idea where you want to take a George and |
s | I'm just like one of our writers is |
s | right there I think he's doing some |
s | photographers that's Ryan well yeah Ryan |
s | and can some amazing writing from those |
s | guys I think team people have asked me |
s | that too and they've go like you know I |
s | was like wow I really loved all the |
s | stuff that you do on warframe and I'm |
s | like yeah that's like 30 percent me and |
s | like everything else these guys because |
s | holy crap the writing is so great I just |
s | never say enough stuff about the writing |
s | it's you get to see everything I get to |
s | see all the notes from de when it says Z |
s | oMG Rael Jack that's always fun to see I |
s | love that kind of stuff just the amount |
s | of stuff that you guys put into it and |
s | the dedication that you give to us as |
s | actors to let us take the writing and |
s | then do what we're gonna do with it it's |
s | not just like a spreadsheet of just line |
s | line line it's a whole script it's like |
s | reading a movie and it's just great well |
s | that's that's that's where the the |
s | character lives right the character |
s | lives as interpretation and that goes is |
s | well for sound design your design and |
s | sound of a warframe what is your |
s | interpretation of it as a sound designer |
s | or as a voice artist |
s | where are you gonna |
s | how are you gonna bring this thing to |
s | life and that's that's the thrill in it |
s | and that's the thing that that's always |
s | the most interesting yeah it gets better |
s | and better when you have a nurturing |
s | safe place to do that kind of thing |
s | that's what y'all create you know just a |
s | great place for us to get in there and |
s | interpret yep |
s | right let's take a look at our next |
s | question if you could make up a warframe |
s | character to voice what would it be well |
s | my mic well should I say this |
s | my favorite wharfing character is a |
s | warframe is Octavia so she's you know I |
s | mean did you see the Octavia cosplay |
s | here I didn't I've been looking all |
s | around for her because I think for me |
s | like as a sound designer musician that |
s | was kind of the ultimate the ultimate |
s | thing that I got to work on was to to |
s | make a music sequencer in a game like |
s | how crazy is that so I don't that |
s | answers a question |
s | I don't voice well I'm a couple of I'm |
s | like a Grenier and a corpus here and |
s | there but yeah you wouldn't make I don't |
s | you don't want to make up like some a |
s | heartbreak story about a rock star who |
s | didn't get money from the corpus and |
s | he's he hates the Tenno cuz Octavia |
s | stole his headliner that you do that |
s | it's a great idea first I think you |
s | should pitch that all right Steve if |
s | you're listening we're gonna have a |
s | story like that yeah invent a character |
s | that you would want to voice and if you |
s | don't have an answer that's cool too |
s | alright I don't have an answer but I |
s | like to use southern accents all the |
s | time so if you want to hire me for that |
s | I love that to be honest we had the |
s | Fortuna so Larenz have Australians |
s | accents so I feel like it's only a |
s | matter of time until we incorporate more |
s | accents into the game why not why not |
s | yeah we really should we really should I |
s | know I'm not the only nerd here yes you |
s | are sorry |
s | yeah I'm not wearing Jojo pants we're |
s | not talking about that but still love |
s | you dear love you dear |
s | I was thinking about this I was like you |
s | know what I would love to see I would |
s | love to see a warframe come out that was |
s | focused solely on number crunching like |
s | they were just a math nerd and like all |
s | of their abilities were focused on |
s | calculators abacuses just something |
s | crazy and like the sounds that you would |
s | hear speaking of sounds would be |
s | something just like internal internal |
s | math I think that would just be nerdy oh |
s | where would you take that I would love |
s | to see it you could divide someone in |
s | half excellent alright so you just said |
s | you were a nerd so this is a great next |
s | question for you do you find yourself |
s | being like a super nerd of a given |
s | fandom like what absolutely I actually |
s | would say that this is actually a recent |
s | development within the last two years |
s | and anybody that follows me on Twitter |
s | knows that I'm a big old nerd especially |
s | you too right there you know exactly |
s | what I'm talking about |
s | Dungeons and Dragons holy crap holy crap |
s | holy crap half fork monk for life yo |
s | open hands first |
s | I mean I am its it's a recent |
s | development for me but I mean you know |
s | used to be just like books used to be it |
s | looks like a whole bunch of different |
s | things out there that I used to love but |
s | and I kind of do fluctuate from one |
s | thing to another but I found that D&D |
s | not only is great for just you know |
s | group gaming and and with that but it's |
s | also group storytelling its lore |
s | building its world building its scenario |
s | building and it's also as an actor it's |
s | a wonderful way to take |
s | characterizations and build a character |
s | watch them evolve watch them grow make |
s | decisions roll of dice go oh that ain't |
s | happenin oh how are you gonna react to |
s | that and it's |
s | prov - so there's all sorts of different |
s | facets of nerdom fantasy imagination |
s | acting all of it comes together and I |
s | would highly recommend if you haven't |
s | joined a D&D group it's come a long way |
s | from your mom's basement really go to |
s | your local game shop and get started it |
s | would be you'll love it couldn't agree |
s | more |
s | what are you Cheryl what's up what's on |
s | your you know your playlist sir well I |
s | love to watch elementary okay now let me |
s | tell you how much of a fan I am of |
s | Johnny Lee Miller |
s | I went to see him on Broadway like last |
s | Wednesday I took the mega bus from DC to |
s | see this man and the woman sitting next |
s | to me in the almost very back row of |
s | this wonderful place on Broadway was |
s | like I am here for giant Leah Miller and |
s | I said I am here for Johnny Miller and |
s | we are here for Tommy Lee Miller that is |
s | why we're here Johnny Lee are you here |
s | tonight oh that's amazing yeah I just |
s | I'm really into music and then different |
s | kinds of music and I it's funny like if |
s | you look at my Spotify playlists it's |
s | like just a whole bunch of anything and |
s | everything and like I don't know right |
s | now |
s | I don't Fenny but there's this great |
s | Canadian band metric of any behavior I'm |
s | totally into metric I love metric |
s | they're fantastic and so I guess I'm a |
s | fandom of music music you're in your own |
s | band and you also do stuff for warframe |
s | so alright let's take a look do you've |
s | any major inspiration for the work that |
s | you do in all of its facets so yeah I |
s | have a lot of you talking people or just |
s | things in general |
s | maybe so say we ask you people please do |
s | people yeah I've you know Randy Tom |
s | who's a sound designer what's Skywalker |
s | Sound was a huge influence on me you |
s | know I I remember it's it's hilarious I |
s | I don't know 15 20 years ago I sent him |
s | an email and said hey I'm just this |
s | nobody can you give me any tips and he |
s | graciously wrote back to me and it was |
s | amazing |
s | so he's like he's kind of like the |
s | Godfather of sound design him and Ben |
s | Burtt so I look up to them Ben bird of |
s | course Star Wars and Randy Tom a whole |
s | bunch of really really great movies so |
s | yeah those are the two people that I |
s | really look up to Cheryl well major |
s | inspiration for me and trying to be |
s | present in my performance would be like |
s | power of now kind of philosophy and |
s | that's really what I'm trying to bring |
s | time I used to drum and jazz and do a |
s | lot of improv so you know you have to |
s | stay very present there and improv and |
s | acting a little bit so so you have the |
s | headspace you're in it and then you draw |
s | him exactly exactly |
s | Lucas I think for me as an actor I |
s | really I've always been attracted to |
s | actors that love to kind of fade into |
s | their roles and like you you you |
s | identify them more by their characters |
s | than like oh it's that actor you know |
s | it's just you say you say them and I |
s | think like a good example would be Mark |
s | Hamill's Joker and Batman the Animated |
s | Series or the Arkham games and all of |
s | the other variations is that you see it |
s | that that's the Joker and they answer |
s | yourself oh that's more camel oh that's |
s | mark hamill that's doing that and so any |
s | kind of actor that does that and like |
s | for like film actors like I've always |
s | you know appreciated the works of like |
s | you know Kevin Spacey and Al Pacino and |
s | John Malkovich and Robert Duvall and |
s | people that basically really fall into |
s | their their their work and really become |
s | their characters and that's that's |
s | always what I've looked up to you |
s | realize how hard it is right to like |
s | especially if you're doing the job you |
s | know again for sound design you realize |
s | once you start doing it how hard it |
s | actually is to try to follow in those |
s | footsteps and I'm sure for voice acting |
s | too like you did a new appreciation for |
s | it right yeah |
s | absolutely there's always there's always |
s | a some time when I always but there |
s | every now and then there comes to this |
s | point where you have to say like this |
s | character or this |
s | passed away and we need a replacement |
s | this actor has stepped down his |
s | contractors run out we need a |
s | replacement something else has just |
s | happened with your replacement you need |
s | to do a voice match for this character |
s | for this actor in this show I got to |
s | voice match ving rhames for a movie one |
s | time really protip i don't look like |
s | ving rhames someone cuz there's a lot of |
s | series when actors are passed away such |
s | that you need a replacement and that's |
s | what it is and it's like you got a step |
s | into there step into their shoes and |
s | then and if it's it's worse sometimes if |
s | it's if someone was let go or if there |
s | was a creative decision to move on to |
s | somebody else because if there's fans |
s | out there then they're like the old |
s | person but it's new it's so yeah but |
s | there is there is that struggle and so |
s | being able to not impersonate but I |
s | think make the make that make the |
s | character your own and blend all the |
s | instructions all the directions together |
s | and get layer upon layer upon layer |
s | everybody's got to be an onion sometimes |
s | and you gotta just make it go and I |
s | think it's and when you can hit that |
s | sweet spot it's great at the onion the |
s | sweet onion spot Neff onion I could do |
s | this all day a general tip or two for |
s | aspiring voice actors maybe some people |
s | in the crowd have been interested in |
s | pursuing it so what are one tip for yeah |
s | as a as an on voice actor I think just |
s | always you know always be practicing |
s | your craft you know always be trying |
s | different things trying different |
s | characters seeing because I think that's |
s | how you you know like you were saying |
s | Lucas you don't want to imitate somebody |
s | but you want to embody them you want to |
s | become a character and I think the more |
s | you practice that and the more you |
s | develop that skill the better you'll get |
s | at being your own voice and discovering |
s | your own voice so just keep doing that |
s | I think Cheryl probably a well-rounded |
s | kind of education so if you're coming |
s | out of acting sort of |
s | dip over into the world of sound design |
s | so you can understand a little bit of |
s | what's going on around you and if you |
s | come out at the world of music and sound |
s | and you know get your fundamentals and |
s | acting is probably the suggestion yeah |
s | and I think that's really valid |
s | especially cuz you said you edit a lot |
s | of your own stuff so you at least need |
s | that cursory understanding of and then |
s | you learn what it's like from an |
s | engineering standpoint to kind of go |
s | it's just taking this voice and then |
s | doing something with it it's it's |
s | clipping it it's editing out the breaths |
s | it's it's normalizing the volume it's |
s | it's under it's it's understanding where |
s | your peaks and valleys are and how you |
s | normalize all that stuff this is like |
s | there's people who are like what |
s | actually talking about look into it it's |
s | it it'll save you it'll booked you a gig |
s | when you don't have that otherwise you |
s | don't have that knowledge I think for me |
s | going along along side the same lines of |
s | you know not trying to be a mimic so |
s | much I think mimicry when you're |
s | beginning mimicry is something that you |
s | want to do mimicry is something that we |
s | do not as children but it's like |
s | beginning beginning voice actors kind of |
s | getting into it's like oh you sound like |
s | that other actor character than ibid do |
s | you sound like that you would be good or |
s | if you have a deep voice oh you should |
s | sound good |
s | II owe you have a unique voice oh you |
s | should sound good more than anything |
s | else though not all work is character |
s | voiceover work most of the work that's |
s | gonna be out there and you'd probably I |
s | probably wager about 80% of the voice of |
s | work is out there is gonna be done into |
s | your natural voice your unaffected |
s | natural voice commercial narration |
s | audiobook especially for the narrative |
s | stuff and not just the characters that |
s | come along is gonna be done with your |
s | natural voice so I would say a big tip |
s | was learn how to appreciate your actual |
s | normal conversational tone you don't |
s | have to like your voice but you have to |
s | find that your voice has value it has |
s | worth it has a place and it doesn't need |
s | to be anything other than just |
s | appreciate it for what it is then you |
s | build on the characters then you start |
s | building from that it's so inspirational |
s | by the end I I say the same thing to my |
s | little tool man every night I say |
s | you can do this you can do this Gary |
s | they're all named Gary you've been |
s | killing Gary's this entire time I knew |
s | it sure so it just don't meant you can |
s | you just tell us a little story about |
s | the first time nor a night was directed |
s | from casting to the recording sessions |
s | so Cheryl if you want to kick that off |
s | and in George King cuz George casts |
s | things in a way so it's so for me nor |
s | night casting was through one of the |
s | major sites for a lot of different types |
s | of voice opportunities and I just go |
s | there like everyone else goes there and |
s | I try my little thing and I remember |
s | thinking no I actually said to my |
s | husband after this because there was no |
s | a lot of detail was there about the |
s | character but there wasn't a lot about |
s | you know who you would be working with |
s | but I told my husband after I don't care |
s | if I get it cuz that was a lot of fun to |
s | do I sat down on that mic and I was like |
s | this is fun you know I mean that's not |
s | how she sounds obviously but in my head |
s | I was like so yeah so that was the my |
s | experience of doing the audition was |
s | that and I don't feel that way all the |
s | time a lot of times you're thinking |
s | about your natural voice that that's not |
s | my natural voice yeah yeah and I think I |
s | mean that shows right it's like you know |
s | if the actors having a good time with it |
s | you can tell you know and and when the |
s | actors into it the believability is |
s | there and that's the number one thing |
s | that we listen to and we get auditions |
s | in is we listen is this believable is |
s | this gonna work as it's telling the |
s | story you know and and Cheryl knocked it |
s | out of the park obviously sorry |
s | you're amazing here you thank you |
s | [Applause] |
s | we were talking about this at the brunch |
s | I was like when they know that you're |
s | here don't think you're off the hook |
s | Lucas cuz I want to know about yeah walk |
s | us through the Fortuna Neph ano so from |
s | script to recording yeah well for TuneIn |
s | f nu we started off with the demo for |
s | the 410 oak on last year and then a |
s | couple months later we got into the |
s | actual the full script of it so I kind |
s | of knew a little bit from the demo about |
s | where we were gonna go with oh here's |
s | Venus and oh here's some other stuff and |
s | it's like alright cool and then I was |
s | like but I had no idea about the Solaris |
s | I had no idea about the story that was |
s | involved in that also uh Ryan who was |
s | here that's fine anyway Ryan and I sat |
s | down I think it was about two hours |
s | worth of recording that we did over the |
s | phone that we literally recorded the |
s | whole bit of the Fortuna the opening |
s | mission to Fortuna where you get to meet |
s | Thursby |
s | and you need to meet utakome business |
s | smoke finger and rude dude and everybody |
s | and as I was again reading the whole |
s | script it's one of the great things |
s | about warframe is that they give you the |
s | whole script so I'm reading everything |
s | that's going wow look at all these |
s | characters this is so cool who are these |
s | people and then you read all this stuff |
s | and as I got further and further and |
s | further I only had one thought like |
s | nothing I was a bastard I I hate myself |
s | I punch myself if I could oh I will you |
s | know just something but it just sounds |
s | if you love it so much Lucas yeah it is |
s | one of those things it's that and I've |
s | learned to appreciate that you |
s | I'm so yeah you know you hate you love |
s | to hate him you love to hate him that's |
s | like I have no problem playing those |
s | characters until the day I die |
s | new problem but I I remember I remember |
s | specifically one line where I was just |
s | reading it out loud and I was just going |
s | like and I know what it was - it was |
s | when he called out único the floor boss |
s | and it was just like Oh finally someone |
s | with some backbone bring me or what was |
s | it bring me the 50 50 50 solaris for |
s | solaris for forebrain shelving you have |
s | do you get to ask like no make it more |
s | evil you want to we want to hate that oh |
s | yeah I've done that |
s | oh yeah it's not that - they're like |
s | yeah you enjoyed that too much could you |
s | like a lot more with that why it's |
s | always the take when there's laughing in |
s | the room and you know you're just like |
s | oh my god this is crazy |
s | yeah thank you listen over the talk sure |
s | it's here's here's your line it's a cute |
s | puppy now snap its neck yeah that's like |
s | humerus right so we have a very special |
s | video from our sound team next door if |
s | you want to insure this at all or what's |
s | your what do you think what's your |
s | thinking here |
s | sorry we're gonna intro this video sure |
s | yeah yeah so yeah so so this is a bunch |
s | of behind the scenes of some of the |
s | sound design that we do for the game |
s | you'll see there's modular which if any |
s | of you who watched any of our other kind |
s | of live streams modular is a big big |
s | thing at de these days and the de sound |
s | designers paychecks automatically get |
s | garnished to go to modular purchases but |
s | yeah so lot of that and a lot of behind |
s | the scenes of like recording you'll see |
s | some stuff for wisp in here |
s | we're about to break some hearts for |
s | people that are a little too in love |
s | with what spicing yeah especially if you |
s | love your sounds I think there's a |
s | moment in this video that's like the the |
s | curtain gets pulled back and yeah the |
s | curtain being pulled back here so this |
s | and it's the magic of sound design you |
s | know it really it's an amazing job and |
s | it's it's amazing that you get to bring |
s | life to two things that are silent and |
s | it's like okay here you go here's |
s | something that doesn't make any sound |
s | now think of a cool way to give this |
s | character or this thing a sound in the |
s | game and by the way do it differently |
s | than you did the last time right so |
s | we're always looking for new sounds the |
s | guys that are always out recording |
s | things and yeah and you'll see some of |
s | that in this video you are in for a |
s | treat let's bring the house lights down |
s | make sure the sounds to the our |
s | wonderful sound team and here we go |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | [Music] |
s | [Music] |
s | that doesn't count |
s | yeah Wow Wow as a little sneak peek at |
s | some new music that's gonna be in the |
s | game |
s | and it's just a little thing about that |
s | whole thing it just reinforces the fact |
s | that you have to record many different |
s | sounds and you know the wood stuff for |
s | example who knows we may use that stuff |
s | in a gun you know the the chains like |
s | you know it doesn't have to be literal |
s | that's the one thing if you want if |
s | you're looking to get into sound design |
s | always have anything that makes a sound |
s | can be anything you want it to be and it |
s | doesn't have to be the thing that it |
s | currently is which is amazing you're |
s | kind of like a Alchemist or something |
s | here |
s | you're changing water into wine or |
s | something which is yeah which is amazing |
s | so always recording stuff and you never |
s | know what you're gonna end up using it |
s | for it so a huge thank you to providing |
s | that video I mean the sound team is up |
s | here in the front row after the panel |
s | hopefully they can all go sign some |
s | autographs after this you guys do |
s | amazing work so that's awesome on again |
s | that video is such a treat to see just |
s | how things get made I know some spoilers |
s | are in there and it's gonna be amazing |
s | when people see pretty big spoilers and |
s | yeah you'll see so I have a little |
s | trivia game but due to time in the panel |
s | to still get a Q&A and we're just gonna |
s | do the first half of the trivia which is |
s | you have to guess the warframe sound so |
s | I'm gonna play a sound that's a cap our |
s | cast of a gun warframe okay as a group |
s | individually however you want you can as |
s | a group as a group you can guess I can |
s | give you multiple choice cuz I'm not I'm |
s | not evil the Lotus is not evil yeah are |
s | you she and then we're gonna we're gonna |
s | see so here we go first power I'll give |
s | you one more play |
s | well it can't be Octavia right so I |
s | think we can just strike through that |
s | one all right |
s | all right I don't want to say I don't |
s | want to say Cora I've a funny good story |
s | again behind Baruch and his sound design |
s | which Willem are one of our sound |
s | designers created you know he used a lot |
s | of like rain sticks and a lot of like |
s | pieces of wood and stuff to give Baruch |
s | a kind of very tribal elemental feel and |
s | of course if you've been down to the in |
s | the museum museum you'll see something |
s | very special that was used for baroque |
s | that willem brought into the office one |
s | day and we were like okay he's |
s | officially gone over the deep end but it |
s | ended up working amazing so that's |
s | awesome all right number two here we go |
s | okay too easy what is the audience think |
s | think yeah |
s | Octavia yeah yeah yeah Gaara no it is |
s | Gaara that's nicely done guys yeah sound |
s | like was any glass harm the making of |
s | that sound I don't think so I think do |
s | is I don't wasn't |
s | was there any glass harmed in that but |
s | yeah we needed separate insurance |
s | policies when we bring the glass out but |
s | you know ring you know filling a glass |
s | with water and running your finger on it |
s | and all of that kind of stuff and you |
s | know it's interesting that everybody |
s | kind of really associated that with |
s | Guerra and I think she's one of the best |
s | frames oh you're gonna get you're gonna |
s | make some fans in chat live but Guerra |
s | means all right here we go this one's |
s | tough this one's tough Wow there you |
s | guys are okay that's good I think okay |
s | Cheryl's saying Rhino on this one's a |
s | really good guess right I guess if I |
s | only played melee characters you can ask |
s | the audience if you wanna only knew a |
s | Rhino main in the audience audience we |
s | should ask the audience |
s | then IRL is it an arson Aros yeah is |
s | that the tube one is that the two okay |
s | all right that makes more sense all |
s | right we have one more sound trivia and |
s | then we're gonna sit we're gonna take |
s | about ten questions so if you guys want |
s | to line up we'll do that |
s | so first if anyone has any questions for |
s | a sound team we'll take those after we |
s | do the final trivia yeah Frost I think I |
s | would hope I would yeah sounds like nice |
s | stuff yeah we went out recording the |
s | lips and frost Mane's I'm like I know |
s | that's was real ice used in the making |
s | of that yeah definitely and see that's |
s | the thing to like sometimes the real |
s | thing is the real thing and it's up to |
s | you to kind of put it together and weave |
s | it into something new and exciting and |
s | you know give it a personality and a |
s | life so yeah so we're gonna do about |
s | five minutes of questions and then there |
s | is another panel after us so we want to |
s | get enough time to set up so we'll |
s | happily take our first question just let |
s | us know your name and then your question |
s | bring the mic up nice and close my alias |
s | is my mind is stable and excellent thank |
s | you what collection of programs or a |
s | program do you use to make all the |
s | sounds that you do for this game yeah so |
s | the game engine that we use is our own |
s | engine which is amazing we've developed |
s | out over many years that plays a big |
s | role in it but then we use a variety of |
s | programs we use Pro Tools we use Reaper |
s | and just about every plug-in Under the |
s | Sun you know you just got to try |
s | different things but it's not as much |
s | about that as it is about your |
s | imagination you know you could use |
s | audacity if you want man if that's what |
s | works honestly like you don't need crazy |
s | amount of expensive gear you just you |
s | need more the more the thing you need is |
s | your imagination |
s | and that's the most important thing so |
s | thank you for thank all right next |
s | question |
s | hello again we meet again FAO how are |
s | you doing good I have to just say I have |
s | not done anything professionals I |
s | haven't done anything professional since |
s | last we spoke |
s | okay I'm supposed to be doing stuff but |
s | to uh I'm creating your name I'm sorry |
s | Carol |
s | all right George I'm I'm my my true |
s | skills are in writing and even though I |
s | can do voices I another audio stuff I'm |
s | more apt into the writing pictures of it |
s | what would I do if I were to be a sound |
s | designer like how would I put that my |
s | skills to the test so what would you do |
s | to be a sound designer yeah as just as a |
s | writer the transition as a writer zone |
s | yeah um you know I think there are |
s | parallels there for sure you know |
s | because again you're using your |
s | imagination you're using your creativity |
s | to make something that didn't exist |
s | before and that's all that sound design |
s | is is it's taking your taking words and |
s | you're putting them together to make you |
s | know of something beautiful and that's |
s | what you do a sound design you're taking |
s | all these separate sounds you're putting |
s | them together and you're making |
s | something completely new out of it so |
s | again it's just it's like just start |
s | doing it and the more you do it the |
s | better you'll get honestly |
s | so yeah and before I hand this off Neff |
s | I'm working on a project in the |
s | background and you're the one the main |
s | antagonists I I'm I'm on pins and |
s | needles oh you're gonna try to retaking |
s | I Oh after rebels take it from you I'm |
s | looking forward to it yeah I'll check |
s | the forms man Thanks |
s | bozo Preston three two one back here |
s | back here pressed how's your foot have |
s | you healed since we last no no the |
s | frickin corpus still took in I had to |
s | replace it forever um I got question the |
s | more my favorite characters is tava Gore |
s | especially with the combination of voice |
s | and thus correct when can we see him |
s | again because I just love the cool yeah |
s | what can we see him again |
s | when can we |
s | okay we like to give honest answers yeah |
s | I don't think there's anything planned |
s | right now but you know I mean she'll |
s | come back cuz well save that one some of |
s | the best lines is from that limit Tommy |
s | fan-dude |
s | onto the ward a few little dangly bits |
s | and give more to the for you hmm I got |
s | to mock myself that was the best part of |
s | that entire line I was like cuz I knew |
s | exactly how he was gonna say that line |
s | so I'm like how am I gonna make fun of |
s | myself oh I know exactly huh yeah I mean |
s | he had one for a frickin Aled the |
s | jellies and floppy jellyfish yeah washed |
s | up on the beach now those lines I'd love |
s | to see another two-minute for Gore event |
s | like that we're actually only have time |
s | for one more question I'm so sorry so |
s | this will be the last question |
s | hello my username is wily 383 and my |
s | question after watching that video was |
s | how exactly do you come up with the |
s | different ways to make the sounds that |
s | you use because some of those are just |
s | insanely creative how do you come up |
s | with that you just have to keep doing it |
s | and do it all the time and you know like |
s | as a sound designer you're walking |
s | through the world and you're always |
s | listening for things and you're always |
s | observing things it's a great example I |
s | remember at the LCBO here in town I |
s | don't for any of you know it's the the |
s | liquor store I don't go there much but |
s | they have they they have these sliding |
s | doors the automatic doors and I remember |
s | us a few years ago |
s | it just made this it was kind of like |
s | broken and it made this really |
s | interesting kind of opening sound and I |
s | stopped like what I was doing and I went |
s | and I got my recorder and I went back |
s | and I stood outside the store with the |
s | recorder and people walking by and |
s | looking at me and I'm like at whatever |
s | so you know you you need to capture that |
s | sound and you're like I don't have a use |
s | for that right now but I'll probably use |
s | it somewhere at some point in time like |
s | you wanted in the library it's like it's |
s | like going to it's like going to a sale |
s | going like I don't need this right now |
s | but I'm gonna buy it I'll find a use for |
s | you |
s | yeah writer you just have to write those |
s | lines down when you get them and you'll |
s | have a part that you can write for |
s | someone later yeah it's like keeping a |
s | diary or or anything right it's like you |
s | collect it and then you know and funny |
s | enough to like you remember to it's like |
s | you collect it you put it away you |
s | forget about it and then there's an |
s | opportunity where think you know what |
s | that sound would be great here and and |
s | then you go and you find it and you use |
s | it and so yeah huge round of applause |
s | for our panelists and question answer |
s | thank you guys so much |
s | [Applause] |
s | all right |
