So we have mods that add shields and mods that add armor, but we're still stuck with basic shields and basic armor, what about mods that change our shield or armor type?

Alloy plating: +45% armor, changes armor type to alloy

Crosswired array: +120% shield, changes shield type to protoshields

Vapos capacitor: +60% shield, changes shield type to the vapos shields that prevent slash and toxin bipass.
