s | name's Marcus Kretz on the podcast |
s | producer and editor Plus community |
s | coordinator at Digital Extremes on this |
s | episode megan sits down with 3d |
s | character artist michael skier's and |
s | weapons artist as Adams to discuss ten |
s | Oh gem it's a program dedicated to |
s | adding user generated art to working on |
s | the podcast each month we aim to bring |
s | more knowledge to our community on just |
s | how warframes made we want to give you |
s | some behind-the-scenes stories and |
s | different looks at the things you might |
s | never get to hear about otherwise so |

s | [Music] |
s | welcome to the podcast as Marcus said |
s | I'm here with Kaz and skier's I am on |
s | the weapons team and I'm skier's I'm on |
s | the character art team and also |
s | attending supervisor Oh double titles |
s | artist and supervisor so I don't know if |
s | those aside I'll take it it's fine so |
s | the main part of we'll talk about is |
s | China Jen because that is such a huge |
s | part of warframe what will obviously |
s | probably banter off into other things |
s | essentially how did you guys kind of |
s | fall into the ten Oh Jen a program I was |
s | actually hired onto the team at de |
s | through ten Oh Jen basically my |
s | portfolio it wasn't quite on style with |
s | warframe but once they opened up ten Oh |
s | Jen program I saw an opportunity to try |
s | and learn the pipeline and all that so |
s | channel Jen was great for leading me to |
s | that point and that's when Carrie |
s | decided to approach me about being hired |
s | so that was really Carrie black yep |
s | what was the first ten Oh Joan item that |
s | you did Excalibur Artorius helmet oh yes |
s | yeah yeah brain I think it was in like |
s | the first round I kind of piggybacked |
s | off Kass Kass came to the studio we |
s | became friends and I was talking we were |
s | talking about the whole ten Oh Jen thing |
s | and she was like really overwhelmed |
s | there's a lot of work to do by yourself |
s | and like needed I thought like we should |
s | have a character artist on the team and |
s | I was like yeah so I wanted to help out |
s | and over time like she showed me the |
s | ropes mm-hmm and yeah now we've been |
s | doing it for how long I don't remember |
s | the two years mm-hmm yeah I'm gonna year |
s | and a half-ish yeah I just put it there |
s | yeah yeah so Kaz how do you contribute |
s | to the program overall now like you like |
s | you said supervisor what does that mean |
s | we look over all the pieces in |
s | program is a as a group and we make all |
s | the judgments together me and sky isn't |
s | Taylor I'll do that and then scars and I |
s | bring all of the pieces into the engine |
s | and we have to look through all the |
s | files make sure they're all named |
s | correctly make sure that they're all set |
s | up correctly |
s | skyress is making a face that you cannot |
s | see discomfort I don't know what that |
s | faces it's a lot yeah when people work |
s | off-site and don't have access to the |
s | engine it's really hard to guess what |
s | they need to do for the pieces to look |
s | right in the game we have to guide that |
s | whole process and that's kind of where |
s | the supervisor thing yes and we're kind |
s | of like |
s | well I see sometimes when you guys have |
s | that meeting and you're in that meeting |
s | for almost the entire evening around 15 |
s | was the meeting 130 130 yeah and then |
s | [Music] |
s | I've seen like Taylor get like three |
s | cups of coffee like three different |
s | trips for coffee and like all that poor |
s | girl I kind of like everything else here |
s | at de we kind of got a backlog because |
s | you had some major updates coming out |
s | so since round 14 which I think was |
s | November we hadn't looked at anything |
s | that was made up until January right |
s | it's getting more and more popular which |
s | is great because we're getting like |
s | different styles and competition breeds |
s | yeah more better I don't know but yeah |
s | it's been it's been really good like a |
s | lot of different styles yeah new people |
s | too and was great as some of the new |
s | people we've reached out it's like |
s | there's always a risk like that we get |
s | we get feedback and are they gonna do it |
s | or not |
s | we already have this list and it's been |
s | good for the most part some of the new |
s | people they've been really receptive to |
s | the feedback and like their first try |
s | they got it yeah cool mm-hmm I know from |
s | someone like on the outside perspective |
s | of it it's I get really excited when I |
s | see obviously I'm more of the I see the |
s | final product I see what's going in it's |
s | in my patch notes I write it up |
s | but seeing like new names or even seeing |
s | stuff that people have collaborated on |
s | when I see collabs I get so excited I'm |
s | like yes teamwork I was I get it guys |
s | get that teamwork is that like more |
s | popular now people collabing yeah we're |
s | seeing a lot of people because to be to |
s | do everything by yourself |
s | it's hard right that's why I like our |
s | Studios grown to where it is so we're |
s | seeing people team up with designers so |
s | designers team up with the 3d artists |
s | and they'll work together and create |
s | something beautiful sometimes I know for |
s | me I struggle with design a bit or a lot |
s | as an artist that's quite I'm very |
s | comfortable like doing like |
s | quote-unquote production side of things |
s | yeah so having when I get a good concept |
s | makes my life yeah Abdo it all do you |
s | remember a time during the Tenno gem |
s | program where it was like a highlight |
s | for you like something you always kind |
s | of remember within doing the program |
s | well for me it's more like a general |
s | thing whenever we give like the right |
s | type of feedback for someone to get |
s | their work in and to kind of bring their |
s | skill level up just with like a |
s | directional kind of feedback and not |
s | like a prescriptive kind of feedback hmm |
s | like that kind of thing it is always |
s | really rewarding to me yeah for me I'm |
s | still getting used to working on a game |
s | that updates and like we got feedback it |
s | was really cool last year's Tenno con to |
s | meet like some of the artists that |
s | contribute we look at their work and it |
s | was really cool to like put faces names |
s | names to faces so that was really cool |
s | and like everyone's pretty like super |
s | nice and it was cool to make some you |
s | know inside jokes about some of this |
s | stuff yeah I think that was really cool |
s | it's like |
s | the people that make this stuff for us |
s | yeah when we first met caz you know we |
s | had obviously had an online relationship |
s | where you see your art and stuff like |
s | that and then she comes to the studio |
s | I'm like it's cast like we finally get |
s | to meet you in person and do you |
s | remember my dad and I went to the wrong |
s | location yes you went to the old-looking |
s | yeah we were yeah did she get lost in |
s | the small town of London Ontario I'm |
s | even worried like when people come to |
s | town Oh con they're gonna get lost or |
s | they'll get stuck somewhere like I know |
s | when I went even like I said I've been |
s | in London my entire life you want to go |
s | to Toronto I get lost I go down one-way |
s | streets going the wrong way now that I'm |
s | a bad driver but in Toronto I come from |
s | the totally opposite in a wetlands |
s | forests it sounds like a movie title to |
s | walk two miles through snow to get to |
s | school so you're from |
s | it was Michigan you're from yeah near |
s | Michigan yeah in Michigan is Michigan a |
s | wetland am i learning new geography |
s | rounded by lakes and there's tons of |
s | lakes in it so it's got a really high |
s | water table a lot of muddy areas and |
s | stuff Wow I pictured Michigan not that |
s | the sky is as squinty I heard mosquitos |
s | and I like trigger other than ten Odin |
s | here at two extremes what are some of |
s | the other things that you have worked on |
s | because I know skier's you are working |
s | currently or sorry you worked on Quora |
s | yes and Kaz I know you're currently |
s | working on a skin of some sort I know I |
s | was just being goes teasing skyress is |
s | worked on Quora yes talk about that what |
s | was what was your inspiration for Korra |
s | would you always wanna make a cat lady I |
s | feel like it's coming to anime like |
s | originally there is nothing to do with |
s | cats really I'm Scott he was like she's |
s | gonna have a cat I was like yeah |
s | actually it wasn't even going to be |
s | I don't know can I talk yes you |
s | absolutely yes it wasn't even going to |
s | be a cat was gonna be like some kind of |
s | beast using this is a new car break and |
s | I was like can it just be a kebab and |
s | then a bench so it was gonna be more |
s | like corpus II so who's gonna be like a |
s | more a bigger more robotic was gonna be |
s | something I guess new yeah but instead |
s | of Inari like an yeah as an ally kind of |
s | thing then I was like can I just be I |
s | can't yeah my original idea for it was |
s | to be very spider like and be kind of |
s | like lovechild between Rhino and Volvo |
s | chipped like defensive support character |
s | I'm using like giving people armor and |
s | whatnot and stuff like that and then her |
s | changing would be augmenting her |
s | abilities in different ways to give |
s | different buffs or have damage mm-hm |
s | and then through the wonderful process |
s | of game development she became she |
s | changes yeah she got to keep her whip |
s | which was cool and she got to keep her |
s | spikes which is always a part of my |
s | original idea but I think what's really |
s | great is that now that all the changes |
s | are done people are really finding a |
s | place for her and I've seen her on some |
s | people's lists for like getting a B+ I'm |
s | happy a passing grade yeah yeah passing |
s | grade I got those grades I pass well I |
s | mean that's more than the passing grade |
s | sorry yes I didn't mean to put her down |
s | yeah it was a huge learning process for |
s | me was she's kind of the first cuz like |
s | obviously you're an artist so you have |
s | many inspirations and such but was she |
s | like the first would you consider her a |
s | frame that you have designed yes yeah |
s | but the first frame that I worked on was |
s | a while ago but it was Ibara |
s | I had nothing to do with her power is |
s | nothing but I just had to |
s | I got a concept from art director and he |
s | kind of like just help me a tiny bit and |
s | like wanted me to like figure it out |
s | myself |
s | hmmm which was a mind-bending process |
s | and then I was like okay people like how |
s | she looks that's right over the years I |
s | was working on idea for korra in the |
s | background on and off and then i feel |
s | pretty proud of how she turned out |
s | visually even went through all the |
s | changes and stuff and all the community |
s | feedback everybody said she looked great |
s | yeah so he said the spikes and the whip |
s | pretty much stayed what do you recall |
s | what she looked like |
s | conceptually I know you said spider and |
s | she's not spider but do you know any |
s | like what's the big difference |
s | aesthetically she didn't look like she |
s | was from war first really was what was |
s | she more like organic it was to armory |
s | okay to like medieval maybe yeah my |
s | inspirations too because I was like I |
s | want her to have spikes I was like oh |
s | let me look at an Iron Maiden and I have |
s | drawings where the Hat her head is in |
s | that kind of Iron Maiden shape and then |
s | I was like okay let me look at fashion I |
s | was like okay all this stuff is really |
s | bulky but I tried to incorporate that |
s | and then slowly like I slimmed it down |
s | and then like played with her |
s | proportions to make her more like |
s | bug-like and I think when I did that is |
s | when it really started to work yeah so |
s | from conception of a more spider themed |
s | frame to when she launched how long was |
s | that like a year like what are we |
s | talking long time like the first like |
s | the her first being in my head |
s | yeah it was three four years ago yeah so |
s | I pitched her probably in January and |
s | then by August they were like okay we're |
s | interested in like picking this up and |
s | then worked on her from between August |
s | some other things came in to break and |
s | finished her around late November early |
s | December and then the rest was out of my |
s | hand yeah |
s | oh yeah I finished her probably in |
s | October and then they were like she |
s | needs a pack and I was like okay it |
s | would be this many years to make her let |
s | me figure out how to make a path |
s | but it worked out it was great no of |
s | course great you did a great job thank |
s | you and again one of the rewarding |
s | things that I love seeing from the |
s | community side is all the fan art I know |
s | I send you every single piece of core |
s | fan art I can find I always send to you |
s | it's yeah yeah it totally does it truly |
s | is so cause you have been working on |
s | something and you said we've shown it it |
s | is the Limbo deluxe Oh talk to me about |
s | a little bit of the inspiration behind |
s | the Limbo deluxe well the very first |
s | design came from a bear actually he drew |
s | it for minky I think the first 10 Oh |
s | Connie gave it to him so 3 years ago |
s | then well more than 3 years ago yeah and |
s | I remember I was at the first channel |
s | con with him and I was helping him |
s | decide like what the shapes of shoulders |
s | should be and like some balance things |
s | and stuff while he was drawing that so |
s | like when I saw it on Mickey's desk I |
s | was like yeah and then rank you up |
s | shortly after I joined the team he |
s | passed the task on to me and I was like |
s | this is awesome because I kind of |
s | already helped him in a way right so now |
s | I get to take this concept and complete |
s | it but the task that minke gave me had a |
s | little bit more progress on it I mean he |
s | thought it would be cool to add some |
s | inspiration from sentient eyes mm-hmm |
s | because bears concept had like eyeballs |
s | all over it but they were literal eye |
s | mafia so when Keith was like well |
s | sentient eyeballs would work so then I |
s | took that idea and ran with it and just |
s | went full sentient yes I love the |
s | sentient style and just decided that if |
s | I'm going to do it I may as well just |
s | push it all the way I can it ended up |
s | with some really interesting shapes and |
s | stuff mm-hmm |
s | so now I'm working on the bundle for it |
s | and Reb mentioned in one of the streams |
s | that his weapon skin is gonna be tarot |
s | cards which I am obsessed with because |
s | you know |
s | of persona 5 so I'm obsessed with this |
s | Terra card inspiration yeah it's based |
s | off of the Chinese hopping vampires was |
s | the enviros Rebbe must have inspired |
s | yeah so I mean I kept some of various |
s | original concept but it's all really |
s | loosely interpreted mm-hmm like that and |
s | the asymmetrical cloth on this side and |
s | the eyes on key parts of the body so the |
s | tarot cards what are those going to be |
s | like throwing weapons I assume it so |
s | instead of a despair you're gonna have |
s | tarot cards kind of thing it gives me |
s | life I gotta tell you really maybe |
s | figure out which one it is like you mean |
s | like a real like sign like son or hanged |
s | man's I mean yeah oh my god I'm not |
s | gonna tell you which one oh my god this |
s | is a game now it was fun watching like |
s | the design process what you landed on |
s | and you show me more show me one so |
s | where is it as we speak now this is |
s | before time before this is launched or |
s | before the podcast launches but where |
s | where does it sit now in terms of |
s | completion well I have to finish up the |
s | whole bundle so these items besides the |
s | skin yep so I have to finish those up by |
s | the 23rd mm-hmm so most of them are high |
s | poly done for the most part and what |
s | does that mean in case no one knows what |
s | high poly means the sculpting we do in |
s | ZBrush that's the high poly it's a high |
s | detail model that gets like the detail |
s | gets projected on to a low detail model |
s | that goes into the game pretty much |
s | looks like a 3d clay kind of thing yeah |
s | yeah it's the fun that's it there's not |
s | your favorite part of well it's it's a |
s | toss-up between the sculpting and the |
s | texturing at the very end I love |
s | texturing to everything in between sucks |
s | UV unwrapping low-poly |
s | creation baking yeah this all sounds |
s | like another language to me because I |
s | have no idea what any of that means it's |
s | hard to explain to people without having |
s | visuals like I think for me how I |
s | explained the whole converting your high |
s | detail sculpture to a low detail |
s | sculpture or model or whatever when you |
s | say model people are what yeah it's like |
s | in elementary school when they make you |
s | make those geometric shapes paper yeah |
s | and so you'll have your like oh with |
s | like the dotted lines so you when it's |
s | all together that's like your low-poly |
s | yeah like you draw on and that's like |
s | the high detail information yeah and |
s | then you have to unfold the cube giving |
s | me flashbacks public I've tried I need |
s | visuals to explain sure yeah you're an |
s | artist you need visuals |
s | yeah but you nodded your head when she |
s | said textures are so favorite texture |
s | and warframe that you've worked on is |
s | that a silly question |
s | I'm curious it makes sense I just like |
s | metal stuff because it's so different |
s | like when you're in ZBrush it's all flat |
s | colors and stuff and then you're working |
s | on it and painter and it's it's shiny |
s | but it doesn't really have a lot of life |
s | to it but once you give it put it in the |
s | engine it's got like this beautiful rich |
s | bloom to it that affects the camera and |
s | stuff and like suddenly this prime item |
s | that I've been used to seeing only in |
s | like doll colors comes to life when I |
s | put in the engine I think something that |
s | confuses me but amazes me at the same |
s | is kind of similar with like the metal |
s | textures how you can make used metal or |
s | like scratch metal or like dirty metal |
s | look beautiful like that kind of texture |
s | to me like you'd think oh pristine and |
s | clean would be like the best but then |
s | you see like some scratched up dirty |
s | Grenier and you're like yeah like those |
s | are some textures right there when stuff |
s | has like dirt and grime and scratches |
s | and stuff it gives it character yeah |
s | like it's been it's been used yeah when |
s | you buy something brand-new and it's |
s | like got nothing on it's like anybody |
s | could have this right that's all |
s | scratched up and dirty it's like it has |
s | a little bit of a story to tell |
s | exactly um I think it's the most |
s | artistic part of making textures is |
s | adding the grime and like this story of |
s | how it was used like where the scratches |
s | happened where you can't get it clean |
s | texture wise for me it's one we have a |
s | new workflow that we use on characters |
s | and it's being pushed out to weapons as |
s | well |
s | we kind of have a material library that |
s | we assigned to different areas on the |
s | character and so the first thing one of |
s | the first things I had to make using |
s | that method was Octavia deluxe okay I |
s | was like we kind of cool she has kind of |
s | like the sparkly car paint they know I |
s | remember that process like there was a |
s | lot of different like people are posting |
s | videos about it cuz it would hit the |
s | light and it'd be super sparkly it took |
s | some time so I get it just right |
s | but it's cool is to learn something new |
s | and the toys yeah and I think in the |
s | game different colors on her and she |
s | like looks good yeah speaking of process |
s | I just came to me now let's talk about |
s | some hair shall we |
s | in any video game is difficult you need |
s | a like person dedicated and programmers |
s | and everything you need a lot of support |
s | for it there are people who their job is |
s | hair they do hair yeah and they'll work |
s | at different studios we'll pick them up |
s | you can see like an art station there's |
s | a few people that are like here's hair I |
s | made for this game here's hair I made |
s | music |
s | like it seems it seems trivial or it |
s | seems small but it's a long process and |
s | it makes all the difference you play a |
s | game where their hair is static and |
s | doesn't move and you're like well this |
s | looks great I'm curious to see what will |
s | had a fter like the curly hair it's |
s | coming I'm still pushing for a pompadour |
s | oh there's two different things oh yeah |
s | there's like the more feminine one where |
s | it's like a bomb in the front yes okay |
s | like a Snooki Markus is the one editing |
s | these by the way it's a Suzuki with like |
s | the bump in the front is that a profit |
s | or yeah yeah so this Anokhi can we call |
s | it anarchy |
s | no anyway speaking of actually textures |
s | and when we were talking about you know |
s | specially specifically metal and making |
s | it look like dirty and scratch cos I |
s | know you do a lot of cosplay yeah I |
s | watch a lot of tested Adam Savage |
s | oh yeah a lot of tutorials of like how |
s | to do life casting how to do airbrushing |
s | and all that stuff I've watched a lot of |
s | other videos too but I always come back |
s | to Adam Savage who just got this passion |
s | that just it doesn't just leak out of |
s | him it just explodes when he's excited |
s | about something it's just really |
s | motivating you remember the first kind |
s | of thing you crafted together and I |
s | cosplay sense I think I just graduated |
s | from high school or just before then I |
s | made Team Fortress 2 I read sniper oh |
s | yeah I made the vest I mean this guy I |
s | had like these crappy sideburns humates |
s | and you paint them on like some okay |
s | yeah cartoon cake of course yeah and I |
s | practice a crappy accent you were in |
s | full character yeah yeah it was it was |
s | so much fun |
s | yeah and that really propelled my whole |
s | like want to do cosplay but like I've |
s | been making things forever like when I |
s | was a kid I used to make rubberband guns |
s | out of like wooden dowels and clothes |
s | pins that I like bent so they were much |
s | harder and they could I could put my |
s | best one was a triple barrel one with a |
s | hand-carved handle and three rubber |
s | bands I could put on it and I could kill |
s | horse flies with it |
s | how big are these wetland horsefly |
s | [Laughter] |
s | disgusting yeah so the next weapon a |
s | warframe will be a rubberband gun oh we |
s | don't have any giant flies to kill them |
s | not yet |
s | throw those a new war all about oh we're |
s | talking about mosquitoes again we're |
s | come full circle that would be |
s | incredible I am for that let me know the |
s | comments below is that no it's good |
s | skyress |
s | outside of work what's what the day in |
s | the life of sky is like maybe not a day |
s | with a special day nothing I used to be |
s | in high school I used to be like the |
s | go-to anime guy yes I knew this |
s | conversation was gonna turn to him for |
s | my friends back in the day like I would |
s | burn the shows on to like CD ROMs like |
s | huge stack the CD ROMs and go to school |
s | with like the coat with a bunch of CDs |
s | like hey I wanted to root Oh Oh like |
s | music I believe it |
s | still in this is a prolonged relation |
s | nowadays I don't know I try to get out |
s | more |
s | we're stuck in here oh yes try to be |
s | more active putting on air quotes like |
s | Tuesday's today DS like archery League |
s | yes yes it's a club |
s | we're not that competitive so I took |
s | that up I've been doing that for on and |
s | off for four or five years I guess the |
s | big thing I'm doing right now is cooking |
s | that would be if I wasn't an artist |
s | I'd be like training to be a chef yeah |
s | food is creative and artistic it's |
s | rewarding in a different way because it |
s | doesn't take a month and a half to make |
s | something and it's bringing joy or |
s | nutrients another thing I've been doing |
s | recently not as well as Rebecca because |
s | I try the game mm-hmm but I'm waiting |
s | for I guess the game that I'm excited |
s | for Ace Combat okay disguise unknown I'm |
s | a big fan egg Jets licked it I think |
s | they're I don't know a lot about them |
s | but I think they're cool super cool so |
s | I've been playing that series forever |
s | and this game has been in development |
s | for like years yeah and I might actually |
s | buy a VR system so I could play yeah |
s | yeah you playing any games right now |
s | [Music] |
s | space ninjas in space and they shoot gun |
s | Hertz freeze it free to play oh my it's |
s | like over five years old yeah |
s | [Laughter] |
s | is there anything we didn't talk about |
s | that you guys want to talk about maybe T |
s | something or anything I'm working on the |
s | next skin which we did show yes we have |
s | shown annex kin along so that's in the |
s | pipe so the next skin it's it's a lot of |
s | fun it's really cool style it's cool to |
s | be working on something that this |
s | amazing comic book artist designed for |
s | us and it's way outside of what I would |
s | usually do so it's a lot of fun so |
s | that's down the line and I'm also |
s | working on some other stuff secret so if |
s | anyone listening wants to maybe check |
s | out your social medias where can they |
s | find you they can find me and Skyers and |
s | I spell that so it's sk y ER Zed Zed |
s | that's it because I want to be cool hey |
