Poor Optimization or What?

I know on original release of early access it was a huge issue, but it eventually settled itself. Tried to replay the game again since the changes and immediately stepping into the high lands tanked my fps. I'm talking 5 frames a second. In lowest settings, capping frames, turning v sync on/off, nothing helped. Is this a common theme again? Any solutions?
