Greetings Captains,

Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.

With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!

Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!

Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:
1. Play a few of the new ships that I obtained from Santa’s Gift Containers
2. Reflect on 1 year of the New Player Captain’s Log

Brandenburg
After one last round of Santa’s Mega Gift Containers, I was able to obtain a few more ships. The first one that I decided to try out from this round is the Brandenburg. Typically, I have quite enjoyed German Battleships. One of the first premium ships I got was the Tirpitz, which I enjoyed. I’ve also made a lot of progress on the German Battleship line. That being said, I felt somewhat…underwhelmed with the Brandenburg. She feels a bit sluggish in comparison to other German BBs at the tier, and I felt like I struggled to survive in the few matches I played with her so far due to her smaller HP pool. After doing some research, it seems as though she succeeds where the Tirpits or Bismarck doesn’t in regards to AA and secondaries, which are things that I didn’t necessarily try out so maybe my opinion can still be changed. For now, I think I will go with other BB options at that tier.

Question: Between the Brandenburg, the Bismarck and the Tirpitz, which ship are you taking out and why?

London
The second ship I decided to spend some time with from my Santa’s Mega Gift Container rewards was the London, which was a ship I was not at all familiar with prior to receiving her. She definitely seems a bit quirky to me! I tend to enjoy heavy cruisers to an extent, but her reload felt particularly slow and while her guns seem to do a decent chunk of damage (both with HE and AP), the range of those guns left a lot to be desired. Having the torps available for a nice, short-range blast is appreciated though! When it comes to cruisers, I find that I struggle mightily in the survivability department. London was no exception, as I felt like I was being beat up whichever way I looked. The weaker (at least perceived) armor scheme combined with the shorter range guns and torpedoes make for a combination that is personally hard for me to succeed in. That being said, I am not fully discouraged since she is a Tier VI ship. I may spend some more time with her and see if I can get a better grasp over her skill set.

Question: When piloting a weakly armored ship with short-range weaponry, what are some tactics you use in order to stay alive/be successful?

One Year Anniversary
Believe it or not, this Captain’s Log marks the 1 year anniversary of the project! I hope it goes without saying that this has been an incredibly rewarding project for me. Hearing unique perspectives and advice from the players that have been with the game a lot longer than I have has taught me a great deal about the game as well as the community as a whole. I definitely feel as though my progress from day one to now is quite large and I can’t wait to continue playing and growing alongside all of you! That being said, the New Player Captain’s Log will conclude on January 31st, 2023. I feel as though I am transitioning from a new player to an intermediate one (not going to say seasoned or veteran, as we all know I still have a LONG way to go, lol) and thus this project has served its purpose in that regard. Additionally, as my personal responsibilities within Wargaming increase, I find that I have less and less time to devote to writing the Log. Don’t worry though, I don’t have plans to go anywhere! You will still see me in the forums, on Discord and on Twitch pretty regularly! Lastly, I hope this experience has been as enjoyable for y’all as it has been for me!

I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!

See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
