Greetings Captains,
Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.
Without further ado, let’s proceed with Week 13!
Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:
1. Played the German BB line in Tiers 5-6
2. Played the French, British and Italian lines in low tiers (mainly cruisers but some BBs)
3. Got my first Kraken in randoms (!) at Tier 1 (sad face)
Focus Points of the Week
Unsurprisingly, my focus points for this week are largely the same as they were last week, as I still want to put a lot of time into my play in lower to mid tiers before I move on to tackling higher tier play:
1. Continued exploration of lines that I am not familiar with, namely French, British and Italian (the idea is to mainly focus on Cruisers and BBs for now).
2. Development of strategy and skills in mid tiers (mainly Tiers 5 and 6 and mainly in German BBs).
Mid-Tier Play - German BBs
Ships: Konig, Bayern
Operation “Develop My Skills In Low To Mid Tiers So I Am Not A Liability To My Team” (name pending) is still a go! I am continuing to enjoy these German BBs, as I feel as though I get punished a bit less for making mistakes due to them being able to take more of a beating (at least compared to their US counterparts, from my perspective). I find that I was able to move in/push a bit more efficiently this week as well. In general, I tried to keep myself in the fray with my teammates (both for AA purposes and survivability purposes) and while that didn’t always work, at least I didn’t ever feel useless or too far away. I found this week that my issues mainly occurred when fighting DDs. I know BBs are slow and thus dodging is more difficult, but I find myself looking for resources on how to counter DDs in a BB, or at the very least stay alive more efficiently. I am definitely interested in hearing everyone’s take on this.
Low-Tier Play - French, Italian and British Cruisers/BBs
Ships: Nino Bixio, Taranto, Weymouth, Caledon, Bougainville, Jurien, Friant, Turenne
As you can see above, I was very busy in the lower tiers this week! As opposed to making my main focus the German BBs from above, I wanted to continue to diversify my portfolio and work on the Italian, French and British lines. My hopes are to get these lines up to Tier V and VI BBs just like I did with the German ones, and rotate amongst these lines (and maybe others) until I feel as though I have a good grasp of how to be an effective player. In terms of flavor, I do have to say that I am enjoying the Italian line in particular. This was my first experience with SAP, and I really like it. The concept of a “not quite HE but not quite AP” shell is very interesting to me, as it feels as though it is the “all purpose” shell. That may not be the case in reality, but I am having fun with it nonetheless. That being said, I also began the French line for the first time this week, and while those cruiser shells are VERY floaty, I am having a blast! So much so in fact, I received my first Kraken in randoms! We definitely do NOT have to talk about how it was in the Tier 1 Bougainville and the match (and thus my kills) were half bots! In all seriousness, I did play the line enough to unlock the Tier 3 French BB Turenne, and I am excited to see how the French BBs stack up in my limited experience with other lines so far. Something tells me that I will continue to enjoy this line as a whole!
