Greetings Captains,

Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.

With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!

Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!

Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:

1. Play submarines and destroyers to get a better understanding of how they perform

Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:

1. Spend some time with/get better at submarines and destroyers

Submarines
Capitalizing on last week’s experience with Operation Wolfpack, I continued with my deep dive (see what I did there?) of submarine gameplay. First thing I did was continue to play Operation Wolfpack this week, focusing more on Tier 8 subs as opposed to Tier 6 subs. Not surprisingly, I still heavily prefer the German subs for all of the reasons I highlighted last week: better detectability, more damage and a better Sub Surveillance consumable. I still continue to really enjoy the Operation, and I was even able to get my first successful full completion while on the Community Stream on Wednesday! After this, I decided to take subs into Randoms at Tier 6 to get a different experience. I will say, it is a lot harder to be successful when you’re fighting real players as opposed to bots! They are much more apt at dodging and dealing with the aspects of the submarine that bots seem to ignore. I will say that Operation Wolfpack trained me really well in being very mindful of my detection and my torpedo distance, so that certainly helped when it came to survivability. All in all, it’s a hard class to be successful in but I am eager to try and get better with them!

Question: What are some of your best strategies when it comes to succeeding in submarines within randoms?

Destroyers
My secondary project for this week was to begin focusing once again on destroyers. I think I was inspired to do so because they have some similar qualities to submarines: the ability to be stealthy, speed and torpedoes as a main armament. Previously, my main struggles with DDs have revolved around detectability. I wouldn’t set myself up in the most optimal of positions and when it came time to shoot or do some damage, I would just get blasted away rather quickly. This time, however, my time with submarines has made it so I am more aware of these important metrics. I found myself surviving a lot more than previously, which is a big win for me. The amount of damage I did would not always be a lot, but I still found utility when playing. I would often smoke up other ships to provide cover, or I would lay down some pressure torps so I could sneak into the cap with relative ease. This week, the draw of destroyers really became apparent for me, and I am very excited to see if I can capitalize on this excitement in the coming weeks.

Question: Is it normal to use Destroyers as more of a utility class than a damage dealing class? In what styles do you prefer to play destroyers?

I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!

See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
