Greetings Captains,

Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.

With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!

Also, apologies for being a day late this week. I was traveling back from Prague after completing production duties for King of the Sea XIV, and needed a day to reacclimate to North American time zones.

Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!

Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:

1. Play submarines a little more to get a better understanding of how they perform
Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:

1. Spend some time with/get better at submarines
2. Watch King of the Sea XIV to get a better idea of how competitive players succeed

Submarines and Operation Wolfpack
With submarines being officially introduced into the game via Early Access in this patch, I decided it was time for me to spend some more time familiarizing myself with submarines. What better way is there to do that than with the new Operation Wolfpack operation? Since I spent most of my submarine time in the American subs last time, I spent most of my time with the German line this time. I think I prefer them over their US counterparts! They seem to do more damage and if I am not mistaken, they have more advantageous detectability and a better Sub Surveillance consumable (not that I used it much in the operation, lol). As for the Operation itself, I had a blast. I have to say, destroying all ships within the time limit is quite the challenge, but something I was able to do exactly one time! The op also makes me very aware of my detection status, as one of the requirements is to keep at least one ship undetected. To me, this operation seems like a really, really good introduction into submarines and an excellent learning tool. I think I will continue to focus on this operation as I grow my skills in this class.

Question: What is your advice for dealing optimal damage in a submarine while staying undetected/at a distance?

King of the Sea Regional Finals
This weekend I had the very distinct pleasure of producing the King of the Sea XIV streams for the NA Region (albeit, from Prague). While I didn’t get to focus as much on the gameplay this week as I did the last due to me focusing on the quality of the stream itself, I really enjoyed the level of competition I got to see while sitting alongside my NA colleagues. I learned the power of the Alexander Nevsky/Gearing combination, how effective the St. Vincent can be, and the different roles and positions that different classes take in competitive play. I am excited to jump back in and watch the VoDs more closely so I have even more to take away from the performances. Congrats to KSC for once again traversing the Loser’s Bracket all the way to a NA Regional victory!

Question: Are there any ships that you are surprised that weren’t used more regularly in a competitive setting?

I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!

See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
