Greetings Captains,
Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.
With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!
Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!
Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:
1. Advance the German BB line a bit
2. Play a few of the new ships that I obtained from Santa’s Gift Containers
Gneisenau
I am still continuing to (slowly) grind up the German BB line and I am still enjoying the Gneisenau! I can tell her build kind of lends itself to brawls, as the citadel is super hard to hit and she can have a decent secondary build. As I am still getting used to that play style, I find that sometimes I am successful in playing as a brawler and sometimes I whiff completely. I can get scrappy with someone and come out successful with them destroyed, or I find myself in a situation where I have overextended and I get farmed on multiple sides very simply. That being said, I think I find more little successes than I do failures, so I am looking forward to continue to grow in this ship and move up the line even further!
Question: The two lines I have spent the most time with when it comes to BBs are the US and the German line, with the French line now far behind. What are some other BB lines do you suggest?
California
I was lucky enough to get my hands on quite a few Santa’s Gift containers of various sizes this year, and I was able to get a nice handful of ships from those crates. I thought it would be a cool/fun idea to try out the new ships I got for a game or two just to get some quick, first-look reactions for the Captain’s Log. The first ship I decided to dive into was the California, as I have a lot of familiarity with US Battleships. I have heard she feels very similar to a New Mexico, and I got to agree with that: she’s quite slow and not very maneuverable, but has decent range and armor. According to the Wiki, the main difference highlighted between the two is the much more impressive AA owned by the California. I didn’t have any significant CV interactions that I can recall in my brief time with her, so I can’t yet speak to its effectiveness. My initial impression is that she seems like a decent ship to keep at a distance and do some farming. Time will tell if my first impressions are correct!
Question: It may seem obvious since the California is a premium, but do you prefer the California or the New Mexico?
Novorossiysk
The last ship I want to discuss for this week is the Novorossiysk, which I was also lucky enough to obtain in Santa’s Gift containers this year. I don’t have a lot of experience with Soviet ships in general (much less battleships) so this seemed like something different that I could experiment with. Maybe it was just a couple of rough games, but I expected her to be a bit more tanky for some reason. I took a lot more damage than I anticipated for a Soviet ship. That being said, I LOVE the accuracy on this ship. The guns feel like lasers sometimes and shells tend to group up really nicely. I think my main struggle (as it tends to be with a lot of ships) was that I just wasn’t sure at what range I should play her. Getting in close felt too destructive, but she doesn’t seem outfitted to be a sniper either. I’ll have to get a few more matches in with her before I have a good sense, I think.
Question: How do Soviet BBs stack up against BBs from other nations?
I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!
See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
