Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.
With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!
Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!
Accomplishments

2. Went a bit more in-depth with some T9 and T10s that I only had a bit of experience with.
Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:
1. Explore ships and game modes that I am less familiar with
This week I am going to talk about the specific ships that I focused on all week as opposed to the individual events or topics.
Grosser Kurfurst
This week in general, I wanted to take the time to explore some higher tier ships, as I have spent a majority of the time in mid tiers lately developing my skills somewhat. Ultimately, I wanted to experiment and see if I had grown much and could spend some time working upwards from those middle tiers. The primary ship I decided to focus on this week was the Grosser Kurfurst. This is a ship that I bought for coal not too long ago that I hadn’t touched too much aside from a few matches. My first impressions are that I really like it! It is super durable, thick and usually able to get out of a jam should I find myself in one. That being said, there were more than a few times in Randoms where I found myself overwhelmed due to my positioning, and therefore I need to spend a considerable amount of time finding out the best uses and positions for the GK. I am excited to take her out some more in the future!
Question: It’s obvious to me that the GK is very popular across many game types. Is she your go to German BB? If not, who are you taking out instead?
Iowa
Ok so this one I decided to focus a bit on mainly because I just got the new Transformers skin for her and I think it looks AWESOME, lol. That being said, Iowa is definitely a contender for one of my favorite ships that I’ve played thus far. She seems to be able to take a bit of a beating (as long as you aren’t exposing that citadel too much), she’s speedy and her guns definitely feel pretty accurate. She does have a bit of a wide turning radius, but as long as I don’t make huge gamer turns in open water with 3 ships aiming at me, it doesn’t seem to be too big of a problem. I also noticed that the step down from GK (a T10) made a noticeable difference to me, as I find myself struggling to impact T10 matches. T9 matches, while still struggling a bit, felt a bit more manageable to me. In conclusion, I really like the Iowa and I plan to take her out much more often.
Question: What is your favorite T9 tech tree ship, regardless of class?
Montana
Finally, the last ship I chose to focus a bit on this week was the first T10 that I earned myself: the Montana. I mainly took her out in Convoy just because I am less familiar with the Montana and wanted to get a few more Convoy matches in. My initial impressions is that she is just a super Iowa. She seems to fire decently accurate and packs a bit of a punch in those smaller guns. She does feel a bit more sluggish to me, and I found myself staying back a bit further than I might normally just to avoid the ire of some torpedo boats. I didn’t get the chance to play her for too long this week, but I am eager to find out if she is a ship that could become one of my absolute favorites.
