Greetings Captains,

Welcome to the fifth week of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.

Without further ado, let’s proceed with Week 5!

Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:

1. Participated in Raptor and achieved a 5 star completion
2. Unlocked the North Carolina after originally going from Colorado to Kansas
3. Began playing more regularly in Tier VIII (still rolling with BBs)

Focus Points of the Week
After talking to a number of you in last week’s thread, I made a few changes in focus that I think were beneficial to my learning experience. Here’s a few things I accomplished:

1. Focused on having an escape plan in any situation
2. In situations where I am being targeted by multiple ships, I have paid more attention to how I am angled. Before I was doing sort of a “split the difference” approach, which left me susceptible to both ships.

BBs - Randoms (Tier 8)
It had been made blatantly aware to me that when I originally went from Colorado to Kansas in the US BB line, I had made a mistake. I took some time this week to fix that mistake, and I unlocked the North Carolina! I enjoyed quite a few randoms with her with mixed success

Ship I used: North Carolina Observations: My streak of surviving more definitely continued. I paid more attention to my map placement a lot more this week as well, which I think improved my overall survivability. This occasionally led to me retreating farther back than I would have liked, but this would also pull some ships away from the objective, so I consider that a net positive. My damage output is also slowly creeping up (the jump up to Tier 8 definitely helps with that, but I am also landing more effective shots I think) so that’s nice!

Things I need to be more cognizant of:
1. Strategic Retreat - Like I mentioned above, I focused on having an exit strategy this week. Sometimes that exit strategy would take me too far out of the game though. I am encouraged by my mindset but I need to think more carefully on my retreat patterns so I don’t become useless for the rest of the match.
2. Lead Time - North Carolina’s guns are definitely floaty, which has led to an adjustment period on how I lead ships when opening fire. I need to think more carefully about this in game so I spend a little less time whiffing completely.

Operations - Raptor Rescue
I saved the Raptor….kinda!

I mentioned last week that I took some time learning about the Operations and how best to take them on. I’ll admit that based off of that study and just my general perception, I thought Raptor Rescue was going to be a piece of cake. Well, I got a bit c*cky. I ended up doing this Scenario twice, both times with the Repulse. The first go around was a massive failure. I got a little damage-happy and sailed too far from the Raptor/support ships, which left them decently susceptible to other ships that I was not focusing. Sure enough, Raptor was destroyed. Big time failure. We live and we learn!

The second time around bore MUCH better fruit!

Ship used: Repulse Results: 95k Damage, 2 kills (7 citadels, which is a record for me!), 5-Star completion Observations: This time around, I was going to play smarter. I branched out some, but I still kept close to my strong group as we went through the objectives. Once the Haoto spawned, I focused up on it at range and took it out in 2 salvos. Piece of cake! I turned my way back towards the crowd and began taking on a group of cruisers, drawing the fire of all 3. I took one out in one (!) salvo and started chipping away at the others before I was inevitably defeated. However, my “diversion” took them well away from the Raptor, and she was able to sail to safety relatively unscathed.

Things I need to be more cognizant of:
1. My Situational Role - Each Scenario is different of course, but the biggest takeaway of this week is that I need to be more thoughtful of what my small role is in the larger scheme of things. The first time through Raptor, I mistakenly thought that I would be a ship-destroying machine, but I lost sight of my objective in that line of thinking.

I think that about covers it this week! See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!

This is something that I have been fortunate to get away with occasionally. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!

I am definitely encouraged by the fact that I am doing a lot of these things already! I think for the most part I am kiting effectively and at the right times. Often when I do retreat though, I don't think about retreating "into the herd" necessarily, but that is something I can keep in mind. I think that will help me stay in the fray more often. Otherwise, my mail goal has just been retreating, regardless of my positioning at times.
