Greetings Captains,
Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.
With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!
Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!
Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:
1. Continued to advance the IJN Destroyer line
Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:
1. Spend some time with/get better at playing destroyers
Destroyers
My secondary project for the previous week carried over to this week, and became my main project. After thoroughly enjoying my destroyer play last week, I decided to make that my sole focus of this week. Surprisingly (to me at least), I am seeing notable improvements in my play! I am staying alive longer in one of the squishiest ship classes and I’m actively seeing that I am making a difference in matches (even if that doesn’t always translate directly to kills or damage). I am continuing to find that due to me being more mindful about armament distance and spotting ranges (thanks Operation Wolfpack!) I am doing a pretty good job at applying pressure at caps or highly contested map areas while keeping myself relatively safe. Once I get myself in a bit of trouble, I always have smoke that I can hide behind or within in order to save myself. The thing I need to continue to work on is getting the confidence to creep up a bit closer to the action and make an even more noticeable impact. Keeping my distance and applying pressure is definitely useful and valuable, but if it doesn’t translate to ships off the board or caps being captured quickly, then I feel as though I am not utilizing the class to its full potential. That being said, I am of the belief that once I get more confident with my skills in this game in general, I will be able to take more calculated risks and continue to be more of a nuisance to the enemy on the virtual seas. Question: Perhaps teaming up more with my allies would make me a bit more comfortable in advancing forward at highly contested points. What are some of the best general team-ups you look for when playing destroyers in Randoms?
I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!
See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
