Greetings Captains,

Welcome to this week’s edition of the New Player Captain's Log! For those of you who aren't sure what this is or what it might do, feel free to check out the introductory post here.

With each topic I discuss, I also added a question at the end to see how y’all feel about things in comparison to how I feel. I just thought it would be an interesting way to get some discussion going!

Without further ado, let’s proceed with this week’s Log!

Accomplishments
Here’s a list of personal milestones that I hit during the week:

1. Played several Black Friday ships that I had not tried out previously

Focus Points of the Week
Here’s a list of the focus points for this week:

1. Play as many Black Friday Ships as I can get my hands on

Massachusetts B
First ship I got my hands on was the Massachusetts B, which is probably not all that surprising considering my love for Battleships. My first impression of this ship is that she is clearly meant to be a bit brawly. She is outfitted with some nice secondaries, and her accuracy seems to deteriorate the farther away you get, so I should prioritize being somewhat close as opposed to sniping. This will take some adjustment from me, as I still tend to be a bit too shy in favor of staying alive (though my recent games in both destroyers and submarines has me feeling a bit less shy overall). Brawling ships is something that has a lot of appeal for me, but they are also something I feel that I don’t have a good grasp on yet. I am looking forward to learning a bit more and getting more comfortable with my skills before experimenting with brawlers a bit more. Question: Is my initial analysis of the Massachusetts correct? What are some tips for newbies who want to embrace the brawling lifestyle?

Alaska B
The next ship that I was excited to try out was the Alaska B. Alaska seemed to be a bit notorious to me, as she is a ship that is no longer available normally, and I really wanted to get a sense as to why. Overall, she seems pretty powerful! She has somewhat decent health and armor, which is great for someone like me whose main goal is to stay alive. She also seems to have generally favorable concealment, as I saw myself going dark a lot more often than I would in other cruisers. On one match, I did have the unfortunate situation of mis-angling myself to a BB and got clapped pretty hard in the citadel for it. This gives me the impression that despite her obvious strengths, she is still a ship that performs best when the person piloting it has a good sense of location, positioning and angling. She seems like a really fun ship, and I am excited to sail the virtual seas with her a bit more!

Question: What are some of the advantageous situations you hope to see when in an Alaska? Safely farming BBs? Destroying other cruisers?

Napoli B
The final ship that I had time to try out this week was the brand-new Napoli B. Napoli is a ship I hear come up in conversations all the time with my colleagues, especially regarding her SAP secondaries. My experience with her was short but sweet. I do love the Smoke Generator (using it at full speed? That’s awesome!), but as someone who loves SAP I do miss having those instead of HE. She also has a ton of health, which of course I am a big fan of! I can’t comment too much on her torpedoes, as I did not end up using those effectively in the battles I played. Lastly, her main battery seemed to pack a decent punch, albeit they don’t have the best range. I have since looked up ways that I can extend her range somewhat, which I may end up doing. All in all, this seems to be a ship that I will be very comfortable revisiting in the near future. Question: When in Randoms, what are some of the best techniques to being successful in a Napoli?
I think that about covers it this week! I want to remind everyone that the New Player Captain’s Log is also designed to be a place for new players to reply with their experiences or seek advice as well, so feel free to join in on the conversation below!

See you next week for some more New Player musings. Fair winds and following seas!
