Lets look at real world stats for the items in game.

Wooden Clubs do 12 damage at tier 1, and 18 damage at tier 6.
Wooden Bats do 19.2-20.8 damage at tier 1, and 28.8-31.2 damage at tier 6.
Steel Clubs/Bats do 15.15-27.25 damage at tier 1, and 37.73-40.87 damage at tier 6.

These are the three tiers. Also note that Bats get increased buffs and damage boosts from skills and books that clubs do not get.

So, I'm not really seeing where the OP's complaint comes from. Do you not understand the game mechanics at all? Steel clubs have the same damage range as steel bats. Your choice to use a "car axle" is entirely your own.
