Just the map for the world is half a gig to a gig. Your save will depend on how much you change, but they usually average around 2-5GB, and I have seen them get as high as 12GB.
30GB is the recommended space to allot for it. It is possible to move your saves to a different disk. This information is Pinned in the Support section of the forum.
If your storage is only 5-8GB available on the disk, you need to seriously do some cleanup regardless of where you put your saves.
