The Wooden Club is the Stone tier, and the Baseball Bat is the Iron tier. The Steel Club is the best club in the game. That’s usually going to be the case; steel is at the top for quality. Guns are being reworked to follow the system more closely, AFAIK.
The current guns constitute T1, T2 and T3 variants as well.
Pistol, SMG - .44 Magnum, Desert Vulture (Currently lacks a tier for both, but has 4 total weapons)
Tactical assault rifle, AK47, M60
Hunting Rifle, Marksman Rifle, Sniper Rifle,
Double Barrel shotgun, Pump Shotgun (Currently missing a tier, i think)

With that said, there will be a new low tier variant of the guns coming; Equivalent to the Primitive/Stone tier of other weapon types. (EG: Primitive bow, wooden club, stone spear)- Pipe guns will be added for each weapon type to fill out the T0 slot.

Blunderbuss? It's basically a renaissance shotgun right?

The system doesn't make perfect sense though, since some T1 weapons (club, bow, knife etc.) can be crafted from the start and others (pistol, rifle etc.) require recipes/perks.
..That'd be why they're adding T0 counterparts like pipe pistols, yes. Also yeah, I forgot about the blunderbuss, good catch.

The system is incomplete. There's plans for tweaking it already in the works.

SMG would fall under the automatic weapon's category, not the handgun category.

For handguns, T1 is pistol, T2 is Magnum, T3 is Desert Vulture.
For automatic weapons, T1 is SMG, T2 is Tactical Assault Rifle, T3 is AK-47, T4 is M60.
For shotguns, the Auto-Shotgun would be the T3 shotgun.

To be honest though, the Tactical Assault Rifle is essentially the same as the AK-47, they have very similar stats, it's not clear to me that the AK is a full tier above the TAC.
In the vanilla game, The SMG, for intents and purposes, is treated as a handgun. It falls under the Gunslinger skill and Agility tree for it's benefits such as quality upgrade and damage bonus, uses 9mm ammo, is mentioned in the Gunslinger skill, and . While it is in fact an 'automatic' weapon by definition, It is essentially an automatic handgun; Not a machine gun. It is a 'Sub' machine gun for a reason. :)

The pistols and magnums are separate trees of the same skill; Pistol and SMG use 9mm; the magnums use magnum ammo.

You are correct about the auto-shotgun though. I had checked the wiki when i first made the post and couldnt find a third shotgun type in the short skim I gave it; Thus I used the qualifier of 'I think'.

The difference between the tactical AR and the AK47 is indeed slight- Primarily it is about the fire mode. The tactical AR is a 3 round burst with a delay between bursts, while AK47 is full auto. So while the stats are fairly close, the AK can throw a lot more lead downwind with more ease and less skill than the tac rifle can, leading to a greatly improved usability and general dps, typically with less wasted rounds. But as far as the internal conventions go, Tactical rifle is indeed currently considered to be the Tier 1 variant; As it was only just added it's statistics may change down the line.
