When I play with friends and our inventories are close to full, we just clear out a room and "Hey do you have bullet casings? Well here's some more." so that two of us aren't carrying the same item. Or just exit the poi and make a storage crate at the entrance, dump your stuff, and go back in so that you only have to go back to the entrance to get everything when you finish.

If your friend is mute (I've played with a few) then I understand but if not then it's easier to just talk to each other.
Even if your friend is mute, grab some wood, make a chest, and shove everything into it, have them take out items they already have, then reclaim the rest. Just a quick message in chat saying 'take what you can carry' or whatever and you're golden.

On the topic, This is, in the end, a Cooperative game. You should be playing with people who aren't going to be jerks and just ninjaloot everything and leave you in the lurch. The group should, Yknow.. Cooperate. I can't imagine something like a need/greed system making it into vanilla. Or even round robin, or anything of the sort.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea myself. But, The game is balanced and built for 1-8 players playing cooperatively with the emphasis being more towards 1-6.

Servers running with dozens of players exist, sure, but, TFP aren't going to expend development time balancing and creating functions around those few servers as it goes well above the amount of players they are trying to balance around. Nor should they.
