You won't have to start a new game. You'll be able to set your game to stay on A19 for as long as you want to play your A19 game. This has been the case for 10 alphas now.

So I'd give it another 6 to 12 months, at the least.
With the exception of A16->A17, And now possibly A19-A20 since they're putitng a lot of extra time into polishing things, No other 7DTD update has taken over a year. And the A16->A17 update was 1.2 years. Typically it's been between 3-8 months after the final minor version of the preceeding major version since the change to bigger but less frequent updates.

And I say 'possibly' for the A19-20 because A19.0 dropped on June 25th, so that 1 year hasn't elapsed; But more specifically, typically they dont work on both the current version AND the next version at the same time. If you count from when work on A20 started, then it's been maybe 6 months, iirc? And if you count from the launch of A19.5, it's been like 3 months.

To the OP though, The only answer anyone can currently give and not be guessing or lying is "When it's done."

Slight correction to the phrasing used here. No one "has to" start over again. In case your server admin didn't mention it, he/she has the choice of updating, or staying in the current version / game. Updates are not forced on anyone. They are always 100% a voluntary choice.

Indeed. Following the pattern of previous alphas, expect Alpha 20 to be opt-in while it’s released as an experimental build, and then opt-out (e.g. manually roll back to A19) once it’s released as a stable build.
