I mean, Direwolves are zombified wolves, so....not very surprising that they have intelligence on par with the zombies. You can tell from the glow of their eyes which is identical to the glow of Feral Zombie eyes. (Mind that the zombies have something of a loose hive mind)

Edit: Also to add: Wolves are friggin smart. Smarter than you might think/realize.

@Shurenai Direwolves extend wolf in the xml, they are NOT zombies.

They also drop Raw Meat, not Rotting Flesh.
It's been discussed before, but, While they do drop Raw and not rotting meat (and of course extend wolf in the xml).. Their design visually demonstrates several traits of zombification onset- Maybe they are not yet full zombies. But they are absolutely infected, and absolutely on the same level as the Feral Zombies. Further, wolves attack zombies as well as players, which is a sure way to get infected- Just look at the lovely zombie bear and zombie vulture for examples (And also note that iirc the irradiated zombie vultures are actually a bit bigger than the normal vultures- Seems similar to wolf vs direwolf)

The only thing is that the infected direwolf has not yet actually Died to begin rotting and turning into a zombie wolf.

Real IRL Dire Wolves also are not native to the area the game takes place; or in any location anywhere nearby to it; so the direwolves existing in the gameworld (which share more traits with their little brothers in game than with actual dire wolves) are unnaturally mutated normal wolves.

Buuut this isn't the place to argue it, so, I'll leave it here. :)

And thats the disconnect. Irl doggos are dumb. Doggos are pretty dumb in general Wolves are not doggos. Wolves will absolutely find a way to get to you if you just hover in plain view without any attempt to hide and give them time to do so. Wolves are very smart, and very capable of solving for puzzling situations.

Yea, but not tearing down stuctures in the progress, definitely not metal and bricks.
That i would expect from a bear, not from a wolf.
If they can tear it down to get to you, yes, they absolutely will. The only difference in 7DTD is that anything is capable of breaking anything- This applies to all entities. You can break a metal block, so can zombies, so can wolves; even snakes can break blocks, it just takes them a really really long time.

It seems like your complaint is more about their strength than their smarts. Like others have said, any entity with an attack can tear through metal and brick.

It’s funny. When considering what a zombie should and shouldn’t be able to do, I always come back to dogs. An angry dog can
  • chase you a long ways
  • attack as part of a group
  • get distracted by interesting sounds/smells
  • generally not manipulate weapons, tools, or doors

And so on. It’s a good rule of thumb for what zombie-like behavior is, in my opinion. Or in this case, an even better guide for wolf-like behavior. :cozyovercooked2:
