You want to pick of the pre-horde zombies just before they rage.

That would be another difference with a sedentary approach, with a base. When you’re in the same area every day, you quickly suppress the local population of zombies. So except for screamer hordes, city zombies, or the rare wandering horde, there are no pre-horde zombies around your base.
