Edit, there are also a couple of rooms that you drop into, you can see the entire room is empty, from the hole in the roof, but when you drop in, they beam down from their starship.
Edit, certain events aren't too bad, so if you open door with a switch, you get a large spawn, that appear out of view, and chase you down, which other than making stealth builds completely pointless, works as a mechanic.
Well, we’re getting crawl-out zombies in the next major release.
We have added functionality to allow zombies to spawn and crawl out of smaller 1 meter spaces and crawl under tighter areas.
We have improved the tools for spawning and respawning enemies and reworked many of the larger POIS to take full advantage maintaining the challenge while improving the performance
This sounds to me like spawner blocks, where a series of zombies can visibly crawl out of a hole in the ground, in the wall, or wherever. It seems clear the devs feel they need significantly more zombies to spawn, at least in certain scenarios (like infested quests), than there are places to put unique sleeper spawn points.
This will serve as a test for what players actually dislike. Is it the immersion breaker, that zombies are seen popping into existence? Or, if that is addressed with crawling-out-of-a-hole animations, is it actually that players want to be able to shoot every zombie before it activates? If it’s the latter, then players will still be unhappy after crawl out zombies are implemented.
