James is making an appeal for forum etiquette, which includes looking to see if your issue is one that has come up over and over again already. So that everyone else, who reads threads like yours wanting to be helpful, doesn’t have to revisit the same question that was already asked and answered. It’s not arduous to do: we organize topics by sub-forums and there is a search feature.

It is more convenient for you individually to just toss your question at General Discussions, with no research, and wait for someone to help you. But you disrespect the time of those very people you rely on for an answer, when you expect them to repeat themselves.

That’s where James’ reference to being the “main character” came from. Somebody actually reported James’ reply for being rude, but I see making redundant threads as the real rudeness: a breach of netiquette that’s rude to the whole community of readers.
